If its wrong to wreck the planet, then its wrong to profit from it. - Bill McKibben, Harvard College 82, founder of 350.org

Why Divest?
GLOBAL WARMING THREATENS OUR FUTURES
We are burning fossil fuels at a rate that will likely warm the planet 4C by 2100. According to a World Bank report, such warming could potentially be beyond adaptation, devastating the global food system and the societies that rely upon it. under 2C warming. THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY IS AT THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM

The business plan of the fossil fuel industry is fundamentally incompatible with a livable future free of climate destruction. Fossil fuel companies expect to extract and combust their coal, oil, and natural gas reserves. However, while global reserves total 2795 gigatons of carbon, we can release ony 20% of that (565 gigatons) into the atmosphere if we hope to remain

DIVESTMENT IS A POLITICAL STRATEGY THAT WILL HELP LEAD TO CLIMATE ACTION

Divestment stigmatizes fossil fuel companies as morally corrupt entities. By taking away their social license, divestment will decrease these companies political influence. Divestment is also an important tactic for building the climate movement and putting climate change back on the national agenda. As during the South African apartheid

DIVESTMENT PROTECTS HARVARDS ENDOWMENT

The stock market overvalues fossil fuel companies because it assumes they will profit from burning all of their reserves. Divestment would protect Harvards endowment from the coming collapse of this carbon bubble.

STUDENTS AND FACULTY SUPPORT DIVESTMENT

72% of Harvard undergrads and 67% of Law School students voted in support of fossil fuel divestment in student government referenda over this past school year. Over 90 faculty members have signed a resolution calling for Harvard to divest its direct holdings from fossil fuel companies.
