The Moorestown town hall and library project is on schedule, according to Greyhawks project executive Rob Notley. More than 3,000
pieces of steel were installed and the project is 22 percent completed as of June 10, he said. The 46,000 square foot, two-story
structures completion is expected by March 2014. Progress is looking good, Notley said, adding that the pouring of the final
concrete slab was pushed back due to the weather.

LGBT
group

The Moorestown Sun
Ian Fiedler, a Moorestown
High School senior (class of 2013)
helped spearhead a project that
serves as a judge-free hangout for
lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-
gender teens in Burlington, Cam-
den and Gloucester counties. The
Kaleidoscope Teen group meets
once a month at The Spot Teen
Center in Voorhees.
The organization, which offi-
cially began in April, was de-
signed for teens ages 13 to 18 to
gather and meet new people with-
out being judged because of sexu-
al orientation.
Fiedler said he took on the
project after many discussions
with Linda Murphy, president of
PFLAG Collingswood a support
group for gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender people as well as
their parents, family members or
friends.
Fiedler and his parents attend
please see LGBT, page 2
PFLAG meetings.
We were saying how there is
really nothing for LGBTs in
South Jersey.
There are resources in North
Jersey and Philadelphia.
There is really nothing here,
he said.
The idea for Kaleidoscope
stemmed from Cooper University
Hospital pediatric physician Dr.
Robert Brown.
Murphy said Brown, who
formed a LGBT sensitivity
seminar for hospital doctors and
staff, suggested a group should be
formed allowing teens in the area
to find a place to go that is closer
to home.
Thats where the whole idea
came to be, Murphy said.
Besides the newly created
South Jersey group, the only
other centers that offer support
to these teens are at the Attic
Youth Center in Philadelphia and
The Pride Center in New
Brunswick.
After speaking to Fiedler about
the idea, he immediately jumped
on board, volunteering to take on
the task of spreading the word
about the program.
Teachers, social workers, Gay-
Straight Alliance advisors, ado-
lescent medical physicians and
teen advocates are included on
the Adult Advisory Committee to
represent the program.
The groups advisors are
trained in suicide and bullying
prevention, Fiedler said.
All advisors must go through
two background checks and a
child-abuse history check.
All meetings are youth run.
At the last meeting, approxi-
mately 10 teens attended with
four adults.
Fiedler said those numbers are
greater than what he expected.
As we get more involved we
would like to meet weekly or bi-
weekly and increase hours so we
can provide more services, he
said.
Its kind of difficult because
we are dealing with mostly ages
13 to 18.
But the group is really more
important for the younger people
in high school such as freshman
and sophomore students.
Another difficult factor
Fiedler knew the organization
would face is transportation.
The problem is they might
not be out to their parents,
making it difficult for them to get
to meetings without a license, he
said.
The Voorhees Town Center
was selected for its proximity to
public transportation.
If the teens are not comfort-
able at the meeting, they have the
option of walking around the
mall before getting a ride back
home.
Fiedler and Murphy said there
are plenty of teens who may be
uncomfortable with their sexual-
ity who could benefit from at-
tending support groups.
Its difficult to grow up in a
world where you have to worry
about being bullied and being
judged and thought to be differ-
ent.
Kaleidoscope will provide a

Four Moorestown High School
golfers were sent to the BCLS
Open on Tuesday, May 28, and
came out on top, defeating
Burlington Township, last years
state champions, with 327
strokes.
Junior Justin DeVany, seniors
Tommy Muccifori and Mike
Dobbs and freshman Josh Peder-
son (son of former Philadelphia
Eagles and Green Bay Packers
quarterback Doug Pederson) rep-
resented the team at the tourna-
ment.
Pederson came out on top with
a par 71 in the pouring rain, ac-
cording to head coach Tim
OReilly.
The freshman golfer won the
Group III sectional individual
title, finished second at the
Group III state playoffs and sec-
ond at the Carl Arena/ Al Rifkin
Memorial Golf Tournament
one of the largest high school
tournaments in the area.
It was an honor and privilege
to play in both tournaments,
Pederson said, adding he is going
to miss playing for the Quakers.
Pederson is moving to Kanas
City, Mo., but he ended his golf
days at Moorestown on a high
note.
I had the best teammates any-
one could ask for. I wish them
luck in the future and will miss
them, he said.
OReilly said the team was able
to take home titles in the Wildcat
Invitational and the Burlington
County Open along with the
BCLS Open.
The team also finished second
in the Carl Arena tournament
and third in the Group III sec-
tionals.
The regular season was very
good, he said, adding the team
ended the season 22-1 and was un-
defeated at home for the second
consecutive year.
Muccifori had 89 stokes in the
BCLS Open with an overall best
for the season of 35 strokes on a
nine-hole course.
Dobbs had 83 strokes at the
BCLS Open and DeVany had 84
strokes. DeVany also won the in-
dividual title in the Wildcat Invi-
tational.
This is Mucciforis second and
last year playing for MHS. He is
moving on to Villanova next year
and hopes to play club golf.
It was just great to represent

I
f the only exposure you had to
New Jersey was what others said
or wrote about it, youd think it
was the worst place on the planet.
Scan the Internet just this week, and
youd find these stories:
Our governor called the authors of
a League of Municipalities report on
tax reform corrupt and labeled the
groups leader as a whiner.
A Little League coach in Newark
plead guilty in court to assaulting an
umpire because he wouldnt call a
game due to darkness.
A new report says that the Garden
State is the most expensive state to get
your car repaired.
A great white shark circled a boat
off the coast (not that this has much to
do with Jersey).
The greater public perception of
New Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-
pensive state full of loud, obnoxious
people (thanks Real Housewives and
Jersey Shore) who think they are
better than everyone else (well, arent
we?). Our governor fits that mold per-
fectly, even as he is being mentioned as
a potential candidate for president of
the United States when the next elec-
tion comes around.
Heck, of the three professional
sports teams that are located in the
state, only one (the Devils) are
proud enough to label themselves
from New Jersey. The other two (the
Giants and Jets) act like theyre from
New York.
So why does anyone still live here?
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
Because, for those of us who live
here, who grew up here and are rais-
ing families here, we know the good-
ness that is here in New Jersey, even if
we recognize the bad. We love our
beaches, our mountains and our easy
access to major cities. We are proud of
our small, quaint towns, our history
and our top-notch schools, even if we
pay exhorbitant prices to be here.
We are New Jersey, and well always
be New Jersey.
And we dont care what you think.
What are we still doing here?
With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?
Your thoughts
Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?
Let us know why you choose to call the
Garden State your home...and also what
youd like to see improve.
Community against outsourcing
positions in schools
Board of education President Don Mish-
ler's letter in defense of the board's deci-
sion to outsource William Allan Middle
School custodians was insulting, at best.
Loosely translated, it read:
"We've heard overwhelming opposition
to our proposal to outsource these jobs,
however the board has already decided
that outsourcing is preferable.
The concerns presented by community
and school members are invalid and not
going to be investigated further.
Feel free to come to the meeting and
hear yourself talk, where we have prede-
termined that the outsourcing measure
will pass anyway."
Mishler actually listed the 100-plus jobs
that the school district has already
outsourced, as if eliminating salaries and
health benefits of Moorestown families is
something to be proud of.
How can the board defend this as a cost-
saving measure necessary for our schools?
The combined salaries of the five people
losing their jobs is barely equal to any one
of the administrative director salaries,
who receive bonuses and raises that are
each in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Like the wildly unpopular proposal to
outsource the district's paraprofessionals,
this decision illustrates how ignorant the
board is of exactly what the lowest-paid
and hardest-working members of our
school district actually do for our kids and
our schools.
Our community has made it loud and
clear that we are against outsourcing posi-
tions in our schools.
As elected officials, the members of the
board are charged with implementing
measures based on the wants of the
Moorestown community, not with pursu-
ing their own agendas.
Stop pimping out our school district and
keep the jobs at home.

Coach OReilly
spent six years
leading boys team
my team, Muccifori said. We
had so much depth this year.
OReilly is losing Pederson,
Muccifori and Dobbs along with
four other graduating seniors.
He said there might be more
pressure on the team next year
with nearly half of the team
graduating.
Its the most talented team I
have ever coached. Just a great
group of guys, OReilly said.
Spending six years as head
coach for the boys team, OReilly
lead Moorestown to a Group III
state title championship in 2009.
We lose a lot of talent, but we
have some good players return-
ing, he said.
Muccifori said OReilly men-
tioned to the players the team has
never won all of those tourna-
ments in the same year.
Its great to sort of be able to
stamp ourselves as the best team
in Burlington County, Muccifori
said.

Basketball Academy
announces two camps
for girls this summer
Moorestown Basketball Acade-
my is announcing two camps this
summer for girls. MBA's Offen-
sive Skills Camp is designed for
older girls ages 11 to 14 who want
to focus on offensive skills such as
shooting, passing, ball handling
and footwork.
The focus of this camp will be
to foster aggressive offensive
moves with and without the ball.
MBA's Core Skills Camp is de-
signed for girls ages 7 to 14 who
are interested in learning a full
range of fundamentals and skill
development.
Every camper will learn and
practice passing, ball handling,
shooting, rebounding, offensive
moves, defense, lay-ups, screens
and agility. There will be a variety
of games and fun-filled activities
packed into every day.
Camp director Chris Hill is the
girls head varsity basketball
coach at Moorestown High School
and has more than 20 years of
coaching experience. She led the
Lady Quakers to the South Jersey
State finals in the 2010-11 season,
which is the furthest in MHS girls
basketball history. Hill takes an
active involvement in the instruc-
tion of the campers and works
with them personally throughout
the camp. Keeping the campers in-
volved and having fun throughout
each day is the expectation.
Core Skills Camp will be held
from July 8 to 11, from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. for girls ages 7 to 14.

Programs main focuses are
membership and funding
place where kids can feel com-
fortable being themselves, Mur-
phy said.
Some attend to meet new
friends or even find a place where
they feel accepted. Others might
be more comfortable with attend-
ing the meetings over high school
GSA clubs.
Fiedler said some high schools
dont have GSA clubs.
The students must form and
maintain the groups. Teachers
only act as advisors, Murphy
said.
Schools dont create them
without students asking for it,
Murphy said, adding if more
high schools offered GSA clubs it
would act as another option for
LGBT students to find comfort.
Fiedler said he started the
GSA club at MHS for the 2012-
2013 school year.
Since the program is new,
Fiedler said the focus is on fund-
ing and membership.
The Spot is rented on an
hourly basis, costing the group
$25 per hour, or $50 per month.
Recently, the group received a
$2,500 donation through PLFAG
and the Crossroads Program in
Willingboro.
There are also open spaces for
underclassmen to participate in
the organization.
Murphy said it is important to
have younger teens involved in
taking on leadership roles, since
there is little time between when
they turn 13 to when they gradu-
ate high school.
Even if those seeking involve-
ment are not looking for a
leadership role, all are welcome
to attend the meeting.
Murphy said if some dont feel
comfortable attending the meet-
ing alone, they could bring any
friend.
They are going to be welcome
in the space for who they are,
Fiedler said.
Kaleidoscope Teen meets on
the third Saturday of each month
from 1 to 3 p.m. The meetings are
held at The Spot Teen Center in
Voorhees Town Center.
