Getting Started with Twitter - Top Tips*

1)Take your time getting started.
Start with a few basic hashtags - e.g. #globaled #globalclassroom #edchat #elemchat - in areas of
interest. Make sure you complete your Twitter profile (and include an avatar)!
2) Start out by following around 30 people whose tweets interest you.
Dont be afraid to unfollow them if they dont suit your learning needs. Have a look at the people
followed by @iEARNAustralia @gcporganisers @iEARNUSA @iEARNPak, and go from there.
3) Dont be afraid to join conversations and share your ideas - be part of the community.
Reply, @ mention, RT :) Twitter works when you actively participate. Tweet in your own language,
or tweet in multiple languages (English is very common)
4) Set aside a time of the day to read your Twitter stream.
Use favourites to save things youd like to read later, and use lists to help organise your tweets. It
can be overwhelming - but, remember, you dont have to (and cant) read everything! Even 10-15
minutes a day is a great start!
5) Try and join in a Twitter chat - e.g. the monthly #globalclassroom chats.
Make sure youre online, and follow the hashtag discussion - feel free to lurk, then try and contribute
- say hello!
