Education : future
Challenge : strong knowledge based industry

Association of Universities for Textiles

increase number of graduates in science + technology = engineering traditional subject teaching towards modern and innovative / creative teaching : nanotechnology, biotextiles, smart textiles, product design, advanced (nano) manufacturing, etc. cross-disciplinary education combining disciplines

31/03-01/04/2011

ETP Conference

Education : future (2)

Association of Universities for Textiles

updating existing workforce : short thematic courses, ebased learning, develop European education based on strong alliances : trans-European education interaction / involvement with industry : * defining appropriate competences * study periods / practical placements in industry / traineeships

31/03-01/04/2011

ETP Conference

Association of Universities for Textiles

Existing education is still too much a local activity funded only by governments : trans-national education is needed towards a single European approach for textiles. Tools : European programmes Socrates : in general Erasmus : more mobility! (currently 10 %) Leonardo : vocational training Marie Curie grants : in strong interaction with industry Tempus : for better curricula development in several less-favoured regions Grants for specific international Master studies, PhD, etc.

Research and Universities

- Broad spectrum from (very) fundamental to (very) applied research : from idea to product - Cross-disciplinary research as a result of co-operation between various departments

Association of Universities for Textiles

- Permanent renewal of research because of PhD research by youngsters with continuous stream of new ideas! - Strong interaction with industry : transferring research through incubators and spin-offs co-operation public and private sector.

31/03-01/04/2011

ETP Conference

Association of Universities for Textiles

-Universities co-operate through strong (international) links resulting in remarkable exchange / mobility of people and ideas in a fully open (European) Research Area leading to EXCELLENCE.

31/03-01/04/2011

ETP Conference

Association of Universities for Textiles

Challenging research areas for future textiles and clothing sciences

- Nanotechnology (fibres, coatings, ) - Bio(based) textiles - Interactive / smart textiles - Modelling and simulation - Photovoltaics and textiles - Biomimetics and textiles - Functional textiles - Recycling - Etc.

31/03-01/04/2011

ETP Conference

Association of Universities for Textiles

What does the textile (academic) research community expect from the European Commission?
- Project funding for joint / collaborative research : applied but also towards pre-competitive research role of ERC / ESF and ERA nets for excellence - Grants (Marie Curie, ) for individual mobility (universities industry) - Funding for transferring research results towards the application / market phase : demonstrators, incubators,
31/03-01/04/2011 ETP Conference

Association of Universities for Textiles

- Relevant research areas with great potential :

* bio and textiles * sensors and textiles / smart textiles * nano-manufacturing : electrospinning, , additive manufacturing * biomimetics and textiles * textile modelling

based on international co-operation / partnerships avoiding duplication (role of Technology Platforms!) and stimulating synergies. Remark : administrative simplification in EU-funding!
