TESTING & ADJUSTING

Steering System Testing & Adjusting
Tests and adjustments on the steering hydraulic system include: Charge pressure test High pressure cutoff test Pilot pressure adjustment

Machine Preparation

Remove the plug (1) from the side of the steering pump. Install the 6V3965 Quick Coupler and 3J1907 Seal in the port. For case pressure, connect the 8T0853 Gauge to the quick disconnect fitting. For charge pressure, connect one 8T0855 Gauge to the side quick disconnect fitting (2). For right pilot pressure, connect one 8T0855 Gauge to the inside quick disconnect fitting (3). For left pilot pressure, connect one 8T0855 Gauge to the outside quick disconnect fitting (4). For right drive FORWARD high pressure cutoff, adjustments are made to the upper multi-function valve (5). For left drive FORWARD high pressure cutoff, adjustments are made to the lower multi-function valve (6). For right drive pressure, connect one 8T0861 Gauge to the top quick disconnect fitting (7). For left drive pressure, connect one 8T0861 Gauge to the bottom quick disconnect fitting (8). For charge pressure, adjustments are made to the charge relief valve (9). Changes to the point at which the pump starts to upstroke are made to the hydraulic displacement control feedback barrel adjustment (10).

TESTING & ADJUSTING

Charge Pressure Test

1. Install the gauges and quick disconnect fittings for charge and case pressures. 2. Start and run the engine at high idle. Warm the oil to a minimum temperature of 60C (140F). 3. When the oil is at operating temperature, read the charge pressure gauge and case pressure gauge. Subtract the case pressure from the charge pressure. Charge pressure should be at least 2470 kPa (360 psi) over case pressure. 4. If the charge pressure is not correct, loosen the locking nut on the charge valve and adjust the screw in the top of the valve. Turn the screw clockwise to increase pressure and counterclockwise to decrease pressure. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 52 Nm (38 lb. ft.). 5. If an adjustment is made, repeat the test to verify the adjustment.

High Pressure Cutoff Test

1. Install the gauges and quick disconnect fittings for drive, charge, and case pressures. 2. Start and run the engine at high idle. Warm the oil to a minimum temperature of 60C (140F). 3. When the oil is at operating temperature, depress and hold the brake pedal down so the service brakes remain engaged. Slowly turn the steering wheel to the left and hold until the pressure readings stabilize. Record the pressures on all three gauges. Subtract the case pressure from the cutoff pressure. With the brakes engaged and at high idle, drive cutoff pressure should be 37400 to 40150 kPa (5425 to 5825 psi). 4. If the cutoff pressure is not correct, loosen the locking nut on the multi-function valve for that side of the drive loop and adjust the Allen screw in the top of the valve. Turn the screw clockwise to increase pressure and counterclockwise to decrease pressure. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 16 Nm (12 lb. ft.).

TESTING & ADJUSTING

5. If an adjustment is made, repeat the test to verify the adjustment. NOTE: The charge pressure reading should remain above 1600 kPa (230 psi) after the pressure has stabilized. A lower pressure denotes leakage inside the pump and will affect the accuracy of the high pressure cutoff reading.

Pilot Pressure Adjustment

1. Install the gauges to the quick disconnects fittings for the pilot pressures. 2. Start and run the engine at high idle. Warm the oil to a minimum temperature of 60C (140F). When the oil is at operating temperature, apply and hold the service brake. 3. Starting from the twelve o'clock position, turn the steering wheel to the eleven (left) and one (right) o'clock positions. Record the pilot pressures. Repeat the procedure for the ten and two o'clock, the nine and three o'clock, the eight and four o'clock, the seven and five o'clock, and both six o'clock positions. 4. If the right and left pilot pressures are not equal through the various steering wheel positions, an adjustment to the pilot valve is necessary. 5. Loosen the three bolts (1) that secure the pilot valve (2) to the steering control box (3). Slightly rotate the pilot valve up if the left pilot pressure is higher and down if the right pilot pressure is higher. Retighten the bolts. 6. Repeat Steps 4, 5, and 6 until the pilot pressures are equal. 7. Turn the steering wheel fully to the left and then fully to the right. At full turn and at high idle, each pilot pressure should be a minimum of 1400 kPa (200 psi).
