Configuration Manager Server Installation Quick Reference for Solaris

The Configuration Manager Server Installation Quick Reference for Solaris is designed to provide you with the basic information you need to be aware of to perform a Configuration Manager Server installation, and pointers to where you can find additional information. This document provides you with a list of things that you need to think about to perform a successful Configuration Manager Server installation on Solaris. You may find it helpful to mark off each task on the Server Installation Checklist as you complete it. Unless otherwise specified, topics referenced in this document as sources of additional information can be found in the Veritas Configuration Manager Installation Guide. You can find the installation guide on the Veritas Configuration Manager CD. Server Installation Checklist Each of the following installation related items is represented by a section in this document which contains additional information. You should read each section, and where necessary refer to the Veritas Configuration Manager Installation Guide for additional information. Complete: 1. Install the Configuration Manager Server. ________ Supported Platform, Database, and Third Party Component Information Configuration Manager requires that you install and configure the following components: Component Server Database Server Platform Solaris 10 64 bit Oracle 10g, certified on Windows 2003; Global Mapper is supported only on Oracle

Configuration Manager installs the following third party components: Sun Java2 JDK 1.5.0_10 Tomcat 5.5.9 The Configuration Manager UI is viewable on the following browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 Hardware Requirements We recommend the following configurations: Departmental Dual CPU 1GHz or higher UltraSparc IIIi or equivalent with at least 2GB of free RAM. The Configuration Manager Server requires a minimum of 2G of free disk space for installation and use. Enterprise Quad CPU 1GHz or higher UltraSparc IIIi or equivalent with at least 3GB of free RAM. The Configuration Manager server will require a minimum of 4GB of free disk space for installation and use. If Global Mapper is enabled the system should have at least 4GB of free RAM and 6GB of free disk space for installation and use. A departmental configuration is an installation with 400 or fewer agents; an enterprise configuration involves 401 or more agents.

Important Installation Considerations A successful Configuration Manager Server installation requires you to think about some things that will help you define and manage your Server installation. Installation considerations include, but are not limited to, the following: Determine what machines you want to manage with Configuration Manager Decide what Oracle database you plan to use with Configuration Manager, and whether the communication should be encrypted. When you get to the database section of the installation you will need to know the hostname, database name or SID, user account and password, and port number. Determine on what machine you will install the Configuration Manager Server. Installation Prerequisites There are various installation perquisites that must be fulfilled in order to install the Configuration Manager Server, including, but not limited to: A copy of the clarity-server_6.x.xxx.x_SunOS-sparc.bin self-extracting installation kit. Access to a root shell. Required patches for the JDK installation. For additional information, refer to the Required Solaris Patches topic. A valid license file for the VCM Server. Without a valid license file, VCM will still install successfully, start up, and run without limitations. If you need to obtain a license, contact your Symantec Customer Care representative. Database Requirements and Setup Information Although the Oracle database can be run on the same machine as the Configuration Manager Server, doing so reduces the scalability of the Configuration Manager Server and this type of configuration is not supported in Enterprise or Global Mapper environments. For this reason, we recommend deploying the database on a separate machine. There are two requirements you should consider when configuring a database server to support a single Configuration Manager domain: 1. CPU/Memory For departmental Configuration Manager installations, a single CPU 1.0GHz or higher UltraSparc IIIi or equivalent with 2GB of free RAM (or more) is recommended. For enterprise Configuration Manager installations, a dual CPU 1.0GHz or higher UltraSparc IIIi or equivalent with 4GB of free RAM (or more) is recommended. 2. Disk IO When a single database instance is shared between multiple Configuration Manager Servers, the database server's CPU, Memory, and Disk/IO configuration must be scaled accordingly. Performing the Server Installation There are three methods for performing a Configuration Manager Server installation: Console mode installation.
