Electrochemical Reactions

Electrochemical sensors generate a signal from oxidation/reduction reaction that is proportional to concentration

Oxidation: CO = CO2 + 2H+ + 2e

Reduction: Cl2 + 2e- = 2Cl

Uses for Electrochemical Sensors

Used in portable instruments (Model 102,) for leak detection (measurement in ppm range for toxics & % for O2); confined space (CO, H2S), compliments PID that measures HC from 0.1 to 3000 ppm Other uses for EC (Model 1000)are for continuous monitoring of toxics in industrial environments

PID Analyzers, LLC copyright 2003-2013

Features of Portable ECS

Instant on response Long (2 year) lifetime sensors Robust instrument Rapid response with pump Can draw sample up to 25 away- you dont have to go inside the area or tunnel to test the atmosphere Fewer interferences Easy to change 7,000 logging capability; easy to download data; no special software required

PID Analyzers, LLC copyright 2003-2013

Addnal Features of EC sensors

Wide

range of sensors (20) and growing Instant on for portables Long lifetime sensors (typically 2 yrs.; some available up to 5 yrs.) Fast response Easy to interchange sensors or heads Up to 3 EC sensors in Model 1004
PID Analyzers, LLC copyright 2003-2013

Features of Combustible Gas Sensor (CGS)

Easy to calibrate Cal values stored in RAM The combustible gas sensor has a library of 20 compounds. This allows the user to calibrate with one gas and via the library function, correct for response and LEL value for any of the > 20 gases in the library

PID Analyzers, LLC copyright 2003-2013

Types of Sensors-LEL

LEL Two heated catalytic elements are set in a block; one is sealed; the other is in contact with the sample. Each is in a leg of a Wheatstone Bridge circuit. If the sample contains hydrocarbons or combustible inorganic compounds, they will burn increasing the temperature of the sensors and changing the resistance. The change in resistance is proportional to the concentration.
PID Analyzers, LLC copyright 2003-2013

Wheatstone Bridge Circuitry

Wheatstone bridge circuitry is used for a variety of sensors such as: Combustible Gas, Thermal Conductivity, Semiconductor and IR sensors
