Live Civilly lends hand to those in need
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Starting as a family project,
Live Civilly has transformed into
a nonprofit organization lending
a helping hand to those in need.
According to Kahra Buss, Live
Civilly CEO and president, she
and her husband, Joe, helped
guide their daughters, Anna, 13,
Grace, 9, and Abigail, 6, and aided
in their efforts to address issues
of hunger in the community.
What started with food drives,
opening a food bank and raising
money is growing just like the
vegetables in the organizations
designated garden plot at the
Moorestown community garden.
There is so much affluence its
very hard to kind of take yourself
out of that environment, Buss
said, adding many dont realize
there are residents who are not as
fortunate as the townships ma-
jority.
The garden is just an addition
to the organizations efforts, act-
ing as a test trial to see if it is
worth expanding next year. Buss
said the garden project is an ex-
tension of the organizations
motto People helping people
helping people.
Cucumbers, summer squash,
green beans, scallions, eggplants
and six different types of heir-
loom tomatoes are in the garden.

Historical society given
funds to conserve
Peter Stretch clock
Eileen Campbell, president of
the Posomokin Questers, present-
ed Lisa Hammell of the Histori-
cal Society of Moorestown a
check for $1,500 to conserve the
Peter Stretch clock at the Smith
Cadbury Mansion. The Po-
somokin Questers, a group that
contributes to the preservation of
antiques, received a matching
grant of $750 to help preserve
this important historic treasure.
Peter Stretch, a Quaker clock-
maker from England, arrived in
Philadelphia with his family in
1702 and set up shop at the south-
east corner of Front and Chest-
nut streets. He made clocks for
prominent families. This August,
there will be a book release
through the Winterthur Book-
store entitled, "Stretch, Ameri-
ca's First Family of Clockmak-
ers." The Peter Stretch clock at
the Smith Cadbury Mansion will
be included in this book. The Po-
somokin Questers held a success-
ful yard sale on May 18 to raise
the matching funds needed to
conserve the clock. The Histori-
cal Society of Moorestown is
deeply grateful to the Questers
for their time, energy and gen-
erosity.

Volunteers help tend
to organizations garden
When ready for picking, volun-
teers tending the garden will
gather what has ripened and de-
liver it to the Moorestown Minis-
terium Food Pantry originally
started by Live Civilly, but taken
over by the Moorestown Minis-
terium so the organization could
expand its efforts.
We are now at a point where
we are looking at this at an orga-
nizational standpoint. The goal
right now is to have a successful
garden this year with the oppor-
tunity to expand it next year,
Buss said.
There is one plot designated to
Live Civilly. Until the efforts of
growing and distributing fresh
produce to the food pantry is
deemed successful, Buss said
they are not looking to expand
this year.
I am a big fan of testing things
on a smaller scale before you
jump into something huge to
make sure you get the bugs and
the kinks worked out. This year
will be the test plot, she said.
The organization needs to
make sure the garden is going to
work on two ends volunteers
tending to the garden and the dis-
tribution to the food pantry.
Buss said there are weekly
sponsors scheduled to tend to the
garden, which started on June 23.
Each sponsor is given a checklist
and would tend to the garden in
weekly increments.
They will be doing a lot of
that this summer as our garden
sponsors step up to the plate and
participate, Buss said, adding
Live Civilly volunteers will also
tend to the garden, making sure
its weeded and watered.
According to Cathy Roberts of
the Moorestown Ministerium
Food Pantry, approximately 90
families per month come to the
food pantry for meals. But that
number can fluctuate, causing
the pantrys needs to fluctuate.
At this point, we are totally
nonperishable. We have no way of
giving our people fresh fruits or
vegetables. When the community
garden gets going, we will have
the opportunity to share it with

D
oes smart beget smart? What
defines the word smart?
And where is the cutoff be-
tween smart and not-so-smart?
The state Department of Education
is contemplating requiring prospec-
tive teachers to be smarter or at least
to perform better in their own school-
ing before they can receive certifica-
tion to lead a classroom in New Jersey.
And why not? Smarter, harder-work-
ing teachers should, in theory, result
in smarter, harder-working students.
It makes sense.
But will it make a difference?
Currently, the DOE requires teach-
ers to achieve a grade-point average of
2.75 in college to receive certification
to teach in the state. The department
is now considering raising that re-
quirement to a 3.0, or a B-average.
Symbolically, it is the right move. C-
students are labeled as average.
Dont we want the men and women
who teach our children to be above
that level? Of course we do. Our teach-
ers should perform higher in their
own schooling than the average stu-
dent. The future of our kids education
is in their hands, after all.
Pennsylvania and Delaware already
require this 3.0-average standard, so
why should New Jersey be any differ-
ent?
In practice, though, how much of a
difference will 0.25 points on a GPA re-
ally make? Will the DOE really attract
smarter, harder-working teachers?
Or, conversely, will it be turning
away quality prospective teachers at a
time when it is looking for more?
Its hard to imagine why the DOE
would spend its time debating what
seems like such a minor procedural
change, especially since its likely that
most New Jersey school districts al-
ready require their teaches to perform
above the average before they are
hired.
If the DOE feels upping the required
GPA would make a difference, then
make the change. But its not an issue
that warrants much debate. Just im-
plement the change, and move on to
bigger and more pressing matters.
Raising the bar? Just do it
DOE should implement higher GPA standards for prospective teachers
Your thoughts
What should the Department of
Education require of our prospective
teachers? Is a GPA minimum the right
measuring stick? Or is there something
else that would work better? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.

12 THE MOORESTOWN SUN
5K raises
more than
$500 for
DREAM
On Saturday, May 11, the
Moorestown High School Inter-
act Club hosted its first annual
DREAM 5K.
Through the efforts of the
events organizer, Amira
Scaramella, more than 60 mem-
bers of the community partici-
pated and raised more than $500
toward starting a DREAM chap-
ter in the Philadelphia area.
Dartmouth College students
established DREAM in 2001 to
serve children living in local
project-based housing.
The organization currently
serves hundreds of children in
Vermont and Massachusetts
through committed mentors who
provide adventure opportunities
year-round.
When the members of
DREAM came to speak to our
club, I realized that we in the club
could help make a difference in
our community.
It was something we just had
to do. It was wonderful to see the
rewards of our hard work and to
see our community come
through with sponsorship and
participation.
I learned that the efforts of a
few students, and a great cause,
could make a difference. We were
fortunate to also have the guid-
ance of our club advisors to sup-
port this run, Scaramella said,
adding the Interact Club looks
forward to making this an annual
event.

SUMMER
Continued from page 2
please see MOVIE, page 20
With the county budget $43.6
million less than it was in 2008
and the combined county proper-
ty tax levy down $25.2 million
since 2009, the respected Pew
Charitable Trust credited
Burlington County with having
the lowest comparable, residen-
tial tax burden in the Philadel-
phia region in a study last year.
Recently the Burlington Coun-
ty freeholders introduced a budg-
et plan aimed at earning that dis-
tinction again by reducing the
total taxes needed to run all coun-
ty government programs by $7.7
million while cutting the general
operating budget by more than
$15 million.
The move is expected to contin-
ue a positive trend that has seen
the county share of an average
residents total tax bill steadily
drop from 19 percent in 2007 to
15.8 percent last year.
Facing county tax ratables
(property values) that plummeted
another $1.9 billion, resulting in a
general revenue loss of $7.6 mil-
lion, the freeholders analyzed the
three budgets of county govern-
ment that each operate off a sepa-
rate and distinct dedicated tax
general operations, the library
system, and the open space and
historic preservation programs
in an effort ease the overall bur-
den on property taxpayers.
We came to the conclusion
that given the $48 million already
banked in our land preservation
fund, the 4-cent open space tax
could be safely reduced to 1.5
cents without any negative im-
pact on our efforts to save land,
maintain our parks, or continue
operation of our popular munici-
pal recreation grant program,
said Joe Donnelly, Burlington
County Freeholder.
Donnelly reported that the
overall county property tax rate
will remain unchanged. That will
be accomplished via a decrease in
the dedicated Open Space tax of
2.5 cents that will offset a corre-
sponding increase in the tax rate
for the regular operating budget.
The library tax rate will re-
main flat. Donnelly said that he
was confident that the dedicated
open space fund would not only
cover existing programs, but also
was healthy enough to fund three
major initiatives: the planned Un-
derground Railroad Museum at
Historic Smithville Park; the con-
version of Mount Holly Library
into the countys first general his-
tory museum; and the recent
partnership with the state, West-
ampton Township, and other or-
ganizations to keep Rancocas Na-
ture Center in operation.

Live Civilly has raised more
than 18K pounds of food
our people, Roberts said.
When the produce is delivered,
Roberts said volunteers would di-
vide it in half to distribute to the
noon and the 4 p.m. shifts. Any
leftovers would need to be distrib-
uted to other charities since there
is no way of storing the excess.
We really dont know what to
expect, she said.
Live Civilly has been instru-
mental in not only establishing
the food pantry, but also continu-
ally hosting food drives and
fundraisers to help keep it opera-
tional.
Since beginning in 2009, the or-
ganization established as a 501(c)
3 in 2011, helped raise more than
18,000 pounds of food, provided
more than 16,000 individual
meals and more, according to its
website.
Buss said the organization also
provides homework help and
raises money by selling t-shirts
and magnets with the Live Civilly
logo.
Its really been an amazing
transformation from starting this
as a project to mobilizing and en-
ergizing kids and their families to
get involved, she said.
With the creation of the com-
munity garden and the ongoing
efforts of the community, Buss
said she hopes more families will
get involved and the organiza-
tions efforts will expand with it.
There are needy people in
town, and it awakened their de-
sire to help. I think Live Civilly
has been instrumental in that
awakening, Roberts said.
For more information about
the organization, visit www.live-
civilly.org. If you are looking to
make a donation to the food
pantry, contact Roberts at
croberts3637@comcast.net or
visit Live Civillys website.
The Moorestown Ministerium

MHS boys track finishes
best season in 40 years
Moorestown High School boys
track finished its best season in al-
most 40 years. The team won its
third BCSL-Liberty Divisional
Championship and was second in
the county championship (the in-
dividual champions were: Sidney
Ruffin, triple jump; Malik Montil-
la, pole vault; Jesse Trigiani, shot
put and the 4x100 relay with Amir
Anderson, Anthony Bonett, Chris
Reubel and Sidney Ruffin).
At the South Jersey Group III
sectional championships, Ander-
son (long jump) and Jeremy
Wilbur (javelin) were sectional
champions. In addition to Ander-
son and Wilbur, these athletes also
advanced to the Group III champi-
onships: Trigiani, Trevor Allen
and Wilbur in shot put); Ruffin in
the 100 meters and long jump;
Patrick Visco in javelin; 4x100
relay of Anderson, Bonett,
Reubel and Ruffin).
Ruffin won the long jump,
Wilbur placed second in the
javelin and Trigiani was sixth in
the shot put. The 4x100 relay (An-
derson, Bonett, Reubel and Ruf-
fin) placed fifth. All of these ath-
letes advanced to the NJ Meet of
Champions representing the
largest contingent ever to repre-
sent Moorestown at the meet. At
the Meet of Champions, Ruffin
placed sixth in the long jump and
the 4x100 relay placed 9 with a sea-
son best (and third fastest in
school history 42.99).
Basketball Academy
offers camps for girls
Moorestown Basketball Acade-
my is announcing two camps this
summer for girls. MBA's Offen-
sive Skills Camp is designed for
older girls ages 11 to 14 who want
to focus on offensive skills such as
shooting, passing, ball handling
and footwork. The focus of this
camp will be to foster aggressive
offensive moves with and without
the ball. MBA's Core Skills Camp
is designed for girls ages 7 to 14
who are interested in learning a
full range of fundamentals and
skill development. Every camper
will learn and practice passing,
ball handling, shooting, rebound-
ing, offensive moves, defense, lay-
ups, screens, and agility. There
will be a variety of games and
fun-filled activities packed into
every day. Camp director, Chris
Hill, is the girls head varsity bas-
ketball coach at Moorestown High
School and has more than 20 years
of coaching experience. She led
the Lady Quakers to the South
Jersey State finals in the 2010-11
season, which is the furthest in
MHS girls basketball history. Hill
takes an active involvement in the
instruction of the campers and
works with them personally
throughout the camp. Keeping the
campers involved and having fun
throughout each day is the expec-
tation. The camp atmosphere is
high energy and exciting, as
campers engage in fun individual
and team competitions with an
emphasis on the enjoyment of the
game. MBA Girls Basketball
Camp is structured for players of
all levels of ability looking to im-
prove individual and team skills.
Offensive Skills Camp will be
held from July 22 to 24, from 9
a.m. to noon for girls ages 11 to 14.

HERNIATED DISC
We constantly see patients with Herniated Disc in the neck and lower back.
Repeated injury to the spine, time, use and abuse weaken the spinal ligaments
and place more stress on the Disc's causing them to weaken. When the MRI was
invented it provided a window into the soft tissue Intervertebral disc, and exposed
the fact that 50% of the adult population has herniated disc's. Unfortunately 90%
of the population will experience serious low back pain before the age of 50.
Chiropractic can help correct the spinal problems called Subluxation the leads
to herniated disc's. We use a combination of Long Axial traction, Flexion
distraction and Computerized Adjusting to ease the pressure off of the disc and
improve spinal function to reduce pain and restore mobility. Developing core
strength is essential to having a healthy back. Chiropractic is a safe non drug or
surgical approach to treating herniated disc's.
