Small description of the match (extra-ordinary incidents etc.): Final matchday in the group stage featuring Nigeria that needed a win against Spain to keep up the hopes to reach the semifinals. Spains 3:0 win was however rarely in danger thanks to an efficient way of attacking play. Estdio Castelo, Fortaleza, was the showplace of this tie. The supporters created a very good atmosphere for this match and the neutral ones clearly favoured the underdogs of Nigeria. El Salvadors Joel Aguilar took charge of this game and faced only some challenges in a fairplay match. Normal difficulty for him, even though he also contributed to an easy-going evening for the match officials. The assistant referees were more demanded though.

Crucial Decisions (refer to penalty kicks, sending-off situations etc.) Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the referees decision Penalty appeal by Spanish striker Pedro. He was obviously held by Nigerian defender Oboabona at his neck in the penalty area. The hand was misplaced 13 there, however Pedro fell in a very spectacular manner and with a bit/too much delay. So this was certainly a borderline call but Aguilar cannot be blamed to have waved play-on.

Basic Observations (refer to the general application of the LotG, highlight the referees tactical approach, personality, match control, management of the teams and players, teamwork etc.). Please deploy short but precise and detailed sentences! Positive Points 1. 2. 3. Excellent match control. Good criteria for foul detection. In one case he considered a duel executed with studs up as dangerous and awarded a free-kick close to Nigerias penalty area. This also set a clear line (15). Friendly appearance on the pitch, well respected by the players.

Points for Improvement At the coin-toss, se should avoid to speak English with the Nigerian captain and Spanish with the Spanish captain. This could create a subtle feeling of partiality 1. among fans listening to his words at the TV screen, and perhaps also among players. FIFAs language is English, he should deploy it.

Further observations (peculiarities of the referee revealing his character) This match did not feature any significant or striking points to observe. Aguilar is a calm referee with a consistent line being well respected by the players. The most important thing is that he has very reliable assistants.

However they were not that important 26, 31 for the outcome of the match. 14, 67, Correct offside decisions, partly difficult to take. 69

Minute and Description of the Scene / Assessment of the ARs behaviour The assistant referee correctly signalized a foul on Sergio Ramos happening a 5 few metres in front of him. He thus expressed alertness to take good decisions. Challenging offside decision: a Nigerian forward received a high pass from a teammate in a confusing situation with many players in the box. Spain s goalkeeper had left his goal and was hence positioned many metres in front of 22 the goalline. Nigerias forward was closer to the goalline than the 2nd last defender in this moment it was the goalkeeper. The situation was specially difficult since the forward and the goalkeeper had contrary movements. Very demanding and excellent call. Good call to let the flag down in Jordi Albas 0:3 goal, as the forward started 2 85 metres in his own half.
