Engineering Mechanics 114 - Statics (AMC 110S)
Examination #1 Date: 15th March 2013 Duration: 2 hours Total marks: 60

Examiner: Mr. A. M. Zulu Moderator: Dr. V. S. Kamara

IMPORTANT NOTICES: Write neatly and legibly, as illegible work will not be considered for marks. If you are of the opinion that insufficient information was provided to solve a specific problem, make realistic assumptions, motivate these and continue solving the problem based on your assumptions made. Use F.B.Ds and illustrative diagrams wherever possible. Clearly show the reference Cartesian axes system used for each question. Pay attention to units and show the relevant unit in each calculated answer. No marks will be awarded for answers only. Calculations must contain a minimum number of logically sequenced steps followed by an answer. In cases where two or more different - and undeleted answers are given for the same item, the right answer will not be considered for marks. Use gravitational acceleration g = 9.81 m/s2. Answer all questions.

Question 1
; Q 10i ; determine: 7 8 Vectors: P 4i j 3k j 14k

(a) (b) (c) (d)

the projection of vector P on Q [2] the projection of vector Q on P [1] the angle between P and Q [3] vector R P Q ; what is the direction of R relative to the plane of P and Q ? [4].

Question 2 For the block of Figure Q2, determine: (a) the required value of angle if the resultant of the three forces shown is to be parallel to the incline [4] (b) the corresponding magnitude of this resultant [2] (c) the resultant of the three forces if = 55.3. What do you observe is the relationship (magnitude and/or direction) between these two calculated resultants? [4].

Question 3 A 100-N force has a line of action that passes through the points A (1.2, -1.2, 6) and B (6, 2.4, -5.4). (a) Express this force as a product of its magnitude and the unit vector in the direction AB [5]. (b) Determine the moment of this force about the origin of the coordinate system O (0, 0, 0) [6]. (c) Determine the magnitude of the moment of this force along an axis given by [4]. 4 3i e j 5k

Question 4 The bent beam ABC of Figure Q4 is attached to a pin at C and rests against a roller support at B. Neglecting the weight of the beam, determine the reactions at B and C caused by the 150-kg load [9].

Question 5 The shaft AB (Figure Q5) is supported by a thrust bearing at A and a radial bearing at B. Determine the force in cable CD, and the bearing reactions at A and B caused by the 90-N vertical force applied at E. Neglect the weights of all the members (Hint: Draw labelled free-body diagram and views in the planes x-y, x-z and y-z; Note: Radial bearing has no axial load) [16].
