Burglary charges filed against suspect
A 22-year-old West Bend woman was taken into custody for numerous residential burglaries that occurred in several area municipalities during May and June. Melanie M. Smithwho was arrested on June 18 in the Village of Jackson was charged in Washington County Circuit Court June 20 with four counts of burglary of a building or dwelling and one count of theft of movable property, according to information from the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access Web

Regner Fest set for July 13

Regner Fest 2013, sponsored by West Bend Friends of Parks and Recreation, will be held from 1 to 10:30 p.m. at Regner Park in West Bend. Event to feature free swimming at Regner Pond, family activities, arts and craft vendors, card tournaments and food and refreshments. From June 3-9, West Bend police investigated several burglaries during which the suspect allegedly took money and jewelry. After identifying the suspect June 14, West Bend police notified area law enforcement agencies that the woman was wanted for burglary. It was determined that several of the notified agencies had been investigating similar crimes, resulting in the suspects arrest in Jackson. Between 2008 and 2011, the suspect was convicted of three thefts.

Gardens of West Bend Tour set for July 13

The West Bend Beautification Committee will hold its annual Gardens of West Bend Tour on Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The self-guided tour of six stand-out gardens will include live musicians, prize drawings and lunch discounts at local restaurants. A garden art sale will be taking place at Main and Vine during the tour. Tickets are $7. They can be purchases at Fireside Books & Gifts, 1331 W. Paradise Drive; Mayfield Nursery, 4785 Mayfield Rd.; Piggly Wiggly Food Store, 2575 Highway 33; and the West Bend Park & Rec. Dept., 1115 S. Main St. The tour will begin at 1428 Lower Forest Court, West Bend. Musicians are needed for the tour. Individuals who play an instrument and would be willing to perform on a volunteer basis for at least an hour should contact the Beautification Committee. Slinger had a 7-6 record in the North Shore Conference (fifth place) and a 13-8 overall mark following a 4-0 win over Grafton June 24. John Sprayberry allowed four walks while recording six strikeouts for Slinger. Jake Bjorklund drove in two of Slinger's runs. West Bend East was sixth in the North Shore with a 7-7 record and 11-10 overall mark following a 2-1 loss to Cedarburg June 25. Cedarburg pitcher Drake Daniels allowed only two hits during the game. West Bend West had a 5-5 conference record and 11-5 overall mark following a 90 loss to West Bend East June 24. Jake Perez drove in five runs for East while Sam Lemke drove in two runs.

How to bring the outdoors in

By Tresa Erickson With temperatures heating up, you are spending more and more time outdoors. Youre working on your flowerbeds, sprucing up your garden shed and more. Oh, how you love the warm weather. It makes you want to throw open your doors and windows and bring the outdoors in. Lucky for you, you can. Here are some tips. Bring in the natural light Replace those heavy window coverings with lighter ones wherever possible. Use sheers instead of drapes. Pull up those blinds. Clean your doors and windows, open them on good days and remove anything obstructing the view outdoors. Opt for lighter, earthier colors Planning to do a little repainting this spring? Choose lighter, earthier shades, like greens, blues, browns and yellows. Any color that reminds you of nature will help bring the outdoors in. If you dont plan to repaint, you can still bring in natural colors by changing out accessories like pillows and throws. Add natural materials Bamboo, hemp, jute, rattan, seagrass and wicker are just some of Mother Natures offerings you can bring into your d_cor. Replace your plastic miniblinds with rattan blinds, purchase some wicker baskets for your magazines and throw down a couple of seagrass rugs. Incorporate natural accessories Mother Nature provides some of the best accessories around, from pinecones and seashells to pebbles and stones to fruit and vegetables. Incorporate these into your decor wherever possible. Trade in that artificial floral centerpiece on your mantel for a bowl of seashells. Add a tray of lemons and limes to your dining room table. Stack some rocks on your hearth. Entice the senses Invoke the feel of Mother Nature everywhere you can in your home. Freshen the air with some woody incense, fragrant potpourri or fresh-cut flowers. Bring the sound of water to your space with a fountain or two. Hang some nature photos or murals. Although not real, a wall-size mural of a bamboo garden or a wooded forest can make you feel like you are right there in the outdoors. Go green Anytime you make a new purchase, look for the most eco-friendly option available. When shopping for flooring, consider bamboo, cork and wood over man-made materials. When shopping for paint, look for brands low in VOCs, fungicides and biocides. Natural paint and milk paint are ideal. When shopping for linens, look for earth-friendly ones. Of course, one of the best and easiest ways to bring the outdoors is through houseplants. Accept all seedlings and shoots, visit your local nursery for other options and place all of your houseplants where they can be seen. It doesnt take much to bring the outdoors into your space. Start sprucing it up now, and when the sun goes down and youre forced to come inside, you might not mind it so much.

5 ways older adults can be more active

BY THE NATIONAL DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)As you get older, your risk for health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, increases. You also have a greater chance of getting type 2 diabetes if you have a family history of the disease. But its never too late to lower your risk for type 2 diabetes. Research shows that modest weight loss through healthy eating and being active can help to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in people over age 60. If you are overweight, losing 5 to 7 percent of your current body weight can help you prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. If you weigh 200 pounds, this means a weight loss of about 10 to 14 pounds. Talk to your doctor about setting safe weight loss goals and ways to be more active. Getting started: How to get moving Once you set your goals, decide what small steps you will take to get started. For example, you might say, "I will walk for 10 minutes after lunch to be more active each day" until you reach at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Be active, move more and sit less to help yourself lose weight or stay at a healthy weight and be more flexible and strong. Ask your health care provider how you can safely start to be more active. Before being active, be sure to warm up to get your body ready. Shrug your shoulders, swing your arms, or march in place for three to five minutes before you begin any activity. Five Ways to be more active There are many ways you can get active at little or no cost, such as walking or doing chair exercises. Find an activity you can enjoy so you can stay at it. This will make it easier to stick to your plan and reach your goals. Try these ideas: Around the House. Things that you do every day can help you be more active. Stand up from a chair and sit down again without using your hands. Rise up and down on your toes while standing and holding on to a stable chair or countertop. When you watch TV, stretch and move around during commercial breaks. You can also walk around the house when you talk on the phone. Follow along with a video for older
