Heart Socks

Designed by Patty-Joy White; February, 2013 I designed these socks for the February CHALLENGE on the 13 Socks in 2013 group at www.Ravelry.com My Heart Socks were inspired by Omlys Seven of Hearts. She gives credit for her adaptation of a pattern in The Ultimate Knitting Book by the editors of Vogue Knitting. Notes: These directions assume that you have a basic knowledge of sock knitting. You will knit your own preferred toe and heel, as this pattern does not include directions for those. They are knit toe-up. The pattern is written for magic loop on one circular needle, but you can adapt and knit them on two circulars or on dpns to your preference. I knit these 2-at-a-time, but again, you can knit one sock at a time, if you prefer. Size, Yarn & Needles: This pattern is easily adapted to any size sock using any yarn weight, as the pattern is primarily giving you the center panel lace design and a suggestion for ribbing. I knit the adult socks with fingering/sock-weight yarn, using a US 1 (2.5 mm), 40 circular needle. Knit on 61 stitches, with sock yarn and a 2.5 mm needle and average tension, (I dont knit tight or loose), you will end up with a sock circumference that fits a womens S/M. To adjust the size, reference other socks you have knit, and use the size needle and weight yarn that will make a sock that fits you comfortably. If you normally knit 64 stitches with your favorite yarn and needle size, then simply do so with these socks, and add stitches at the sides of the chart. Note that there is an odd number of stitches on the top of the foot, so, for instance, if you want to knit 64 stitches, you will need 31 stitches on the front needle and 33 stitches on the back needle. All is well!

Legend: IMPORTANT NOTES: Only the odd rows are charted! Also very important: The chart is written to always show 17 stitches in the heart (red-lined) section for clarity, but be aware of the yellow and green stitches in the heart motif, where the total row stitch count is changing. In rows 11 and 21, (the rows with yellow stitches), the stitch count increases from 17 stitches to 19 stitches between the red pattern lines due to two extra yarn-overs in that row. The stitch count remains at the increased 19 stitches for the (not charted) even rows 12 and 22, and then on rows 13 and 23 the stitch count reduces back down to 17 by decreasing stitches at the top of each heart with the 4 stitch. Pattern repeat note: After you have knit rows 1-14 once, you will be repeating rows 15-24 only, (above the heavy red line), for the remainder of the sock patterning. knit purl ~ ktbl (knit through back loop, creates a twisted stitch) O yo (yarn over) / k2tog (knit 2 together) \ ssk (slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, move 2 sts back to left needle and knit together through the back loop) /O yo, k2tog (yarn over, then knit the next 2 stitches together) (Note: these two stitch symbols appear in the same square on the chart, but both are represented in this single square due to extra row yarn-over) O\ ssk, yo (slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, move 2 sts back to left needle and knit together through the back loop, and then yarn over) 4 slip 2 together knitwise as if you are going to knit 2 together, but dont knit! Move the 2 stitches onto the right needle, (which will twist them). Knit next 2 stitches together, then pass the 2 twisted & slipped stitches over the k2tog stitch. You have now knitted 4 stitches into one stitch to form the top of the heart.

Directions: Note regarding the black, red, and blue lines on Chart A: If you want to only use the heart design, and otherwise just knit your favorite size/weight/stitchcount socks, then you can use the heart motif indicated in the red lines. If you want to knit the socks as pictured, with the heart motif set apart with purl stitches on the foot, and the [twisted stitch, 2 purl stitch] ribbing above the ankle, then you will start knitting at the toes by knitting all the pink stitches as plain knit stitches on the foot, and then switch to the charted rib stitches after having knit the heel. If you are knitting a short-row heel, then you will knit plain stockinette another 1 above the short-row heel before starting the pink stitch ribbing. Pattern notes from hereon out assume that you have studied the chart and photos, and have decided how you want your socks to look, and that you will follow the appropriate colored sections from here on. Toe: Sock is knit on 61 stitches, (31 on front needle and 30 on back needle), so begin by knitting toe of your choice, ending with 31 stitches on front of toe and 30 on back of toe. Before starting to knit Chart A, read the legend and especially the IMPORTANT NOTE so you are aware of the changing stitch count on rows 11-12 and 21-22. Note that only odd rows are charted! Begin knitting heart chart at Row 1, (making sure youre knitting this row on the 31 -stitch side). Read chart from right to left, following the chart for all odd rows. Remember to leave the pink sections in all knit stitch (stockinette) on the foot, and dont start knitting this pink section as charted for the ribbing until youve knit 1-inch above the short-row heel. This will give you ribbing around the top of the sock, but leave the pretty foot section all about the hearts. All even-numbered rows, (remember, they are not charted!), are knit on the foot as follows: Knit all pink highlighted stitches, (so dont follow the chart just knit them!), purl all green highlighted stitches, knit all center (heart) stitches. Knit rows 1-24 once, and then continue sock by repeating rows 15-24. Knit in heel of your choice. I prefer a short-row heel. If you choose short-row, you will need to knit 1 of stockinette above the short-row heel before starting back-of-sock patterning. This makes a neat heel that doesnt pooch behind your heel and stays put on your foot. Look at heel picture above for clarification. When you are ready to start back-of-sock patterning, use the following chart:

When you are ready to start the cuff, you will repeat row 24 again, (adding an extra row of stockinette above the heart motif), and at the same time you will reduce the heart pattern section from 17 stitches to 16 stitches by knitting 2 stitches together directly above the center of the heart. This gives you a total of 60 stitches in the round, for the 3-stitch rib pattern. After completing this round, begin ribbing as follows: Continue knitting in the established k1, p2 ribbing, but stop twisting the knit stitches. Knit in ribbing pattern across the top of the heart motif. Continue ribbing until desired length, and bind off using Jenys Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off. Please do not copy or reproduce this pattern. It is currently available for free on www.Ravelry.com, so refer knitters to it there. You may knit socks for your own use, to give as gifts, and for charity, but please do not sell this pattern or commercially-made socks using this pattern. If you do, I will cry, all your yarn will be knotted by goblins while you sleep, and your chocolate will mysteriously disappear. You have been warned! If you find any errors, I want to fix them! If you have any improvements, (or fabulous pictures you wouldnt mind me using), I would love that, too. Please send me a message on www.Ravelry.com, to my Raveler name, Patty-Joy. Thank you!
