ACADEMIC SUMMARY Research Interests


Forensic aspects of memory: trauma and memory, eyewitness testimony, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), confession evidence, suggestibility, amnesia, false memories. Credibility assessment: credibility assessment in the courtroom, detecting deceit, malingering, investigative interviewing, deceptive facial expressions. Psychology of criminal behaviour and victimization: violent behaviour, risk assessment, psychopathy and criminal behaviour, sexual assault, historical abuse, homicide.

Research Supervision
Dr. Porter oversees forensic psychology labs at both Dalhousie University (where he has supervised Mary-Ann Campbell, Ph.D., Mike Woodworth, Ph.D., Kristine Peace, Ph.D.) and UBCOkanagan (where he has supervised Leanne ten Brinke, Ph.D.). Current graduate students under his direction include Sabrina Demetrioff (Ph.D. student), Marcus Juodis (Ph.D. student), Julia Shaw (Ph.D. student), Pamela Black (Ph.D. student), Alysha Baker (M.A. Student), and Lacey Peters (M.A. Student). Dr. Porter has been consulted by police to assist in many cases including unsolved homicides, serial sexual assaults, and frauds. In some cases, Leanne ten Brinke (trained behavioural analyst, Ph.D. student and assistant to Dr. Porter) assists in consultations. Recent consultations with police have included the following:

detecting deception of suspects through behavioural and statement analyses facial expression/emotional analysis based on public pleas for a missing relative assisting in the strategic planning of suspect interviewing and evaluating truthfulness evaluating the credibility of potential false allegations by a complainant personality and behavioural profiling of an unknown perpetrator or known suspect.

Dr. Porter also has recently (2012) become part of the RCMP crisis negotiation team (e.g., hostage negotiations) in the Okanagan region.
