TASK 8: URBAN RENEWAL

INTRODUCTION Kajang is located in Hulu Langat district in Selangor. Current population growth would be at Sungai Chua. Population in Kajang was estimated to be 9% growth per year. Kajang has transformed itself from a small old town to a big modern town by designing and developing new township such as Bandar Baru Bangi and Bandar Seri Putera. Kajang landmark are stadium Kajang, famous Satay Kajang and also Kajang mosque. Kajang can be transform from its town center into a self reliance town. We can apply best practices in Europe at Kajang to make it more sustainable. VISION AND PLAN Kajang is a compact city and it needs good strategies to transform Kajang into city with higher efficiency of the distribution human activities. To be a self reliance town, Kajang must make an optimal used of the city infrastructure, enabling effective use of public transportation and minimizing vehicular movement. The short cycles strategies for Kajang is associated with the environmental thrust Local Agenda 21 and emphasis on achieving local environmental sustainability through efficient local use of natural resources and recycling, greater local economic autonomy and smaller ecological footprint. URBAN RENEWAL Kajang is a compact city with higher population and also problems in traffic congestion. Proposed urban renewal for Kajang is by organizing the city to facilitate the populations because all the facilities are provided within a closed distance. Strengthening the city limit can be done through provision of building schematic colour, building texture and lightning of buildings. It can distinguish clearly the urban area. To solve the traffic congestion issue, only public transport has permission to enter the city. Thus, outside the city, more interchange station and parking space shall be built. Better service such as improve the service level, waiting time and travel time of public transportation should be offered to attract the user.

DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AND PRIVATISATION OF PUBLIC SPACE. Public space can be categories to parks, public spaces, streets, parking, restrooms, parking area and many more. Kajang city can make improvement to certain public space by using the tax revenue from the district. Thus, a lot of facilities can be improved and also can enhance the quality life of the community in Kajang city. For example, we also cam privatize the parking area in order to upgrade the facilities. NAKED STREET AND MASJID CENTRED One of the reasons for people to travel is due to the distance between the places that was located. The consequence of travelling is the fuel combustion that leads to pollution, consumption of money and time. Thus, the planning and orientation of the city should be design properly. The centralized concept such as masjid centered can adapt for Kajang city. Centralize buildings may encourage people to walk to their desire place instead of using vehicles. Thus good walking condition passengers must be provide. Concept of naked street should be implementing. Concept of naked street is by removing all the things that were supposed to make it safe for the pedestrian. MODERN PUBLIC TRANSPORT FACILITIES In kajang, the main public transportation is by using trains, buses and taxi. Within kajang city, there are Rapid KL, mini bus and taxi. The main existing road connecting Kajang with expressway such as Cheras-Kajang Expressway, North South Expressway and many more. Due to higher population of community and abundant vehicle movement in Kajang city, lot of emission green gas occurs. Thus, the usage of modern public transport facilities can reduce the emission of green gas house. It is because, modern public transport are using hydrogen fuel that generate electricity. Modern transport facilities such as tramline can be implemented in Kajang city. The usage of tramline facilities can encourage people to use public transport to travel around Kajang and at the same time can reduce the traffic congestion. Tramline system utilizing the electric energy power movement and the sources are renewable energy and more environmental friendly. Park and ride systems can help to implement the tramline systems. Community around kajang who want to enter Kajang city can park their private vehicles outside the city.

They can access to Kajang center by using tramline. Since the building orientation is centered, they can just walking or by using the tramline. Besides, we can also promote community to cycling and also use tramline to fetch people from one point to another point in city. RIVER FRONT At Kajang city, the only river basin that connecting Kajang is Langat River basin. Rapid development in Kajan affecting water quality of Kajang and also disturbs the ecosystems in Langat Basin. Several large federal government project are located along Langat River and it will affect the price of land and also contribute to human settlements, landscape and ecology of river basin. We can applying project River of Life to make Langat river basin vibrant and livable. The transformation is based on river cleaning, beautification and river development. River cleaning: we can clean and improve the water quality from its current class III to class V water quality that not suitable for body contact to become class IIb that is suitable for body contact recreational usage. Beautification : we can make Langat River look beautiful to increase the economic viability of area. River development: The beautification works will spur economic investments into the areas immediately surrounding the river corridor. To catalyst development along the corridor, potential government land will be identified and tendered out to private developers through competitive bidding. To make Langat river livable and attracted to the tourism, we can have a new development along the river. We can proposed to build Kajang business hall fro convention, construct hotels along the river and develop some commercial area along the river. It can contribute to economical income for kajang city.

CONCLUSION In conclusion, we can transform kajang itself from a small old town to a big modern town by designing and developing new township such as Bandar Baru Bangi and Bandar Seri Putera. So, a proper plan, vision and proper designing can be implemented in kajang city. Some of the best practices in Europe can be implementing in kajang city to make the city more self reliance.
