Rebecca Carlisle July 3, 2013 Mobile Learning Lesson Plan Chinas Communism Under Mao Zedong Duration of Lesson:

The teacher should allow 2-3 days for this lesson, plus a day for assessment.

Standards Covered: SS7H3The student will analyze continuity and change in Southern and Eastern Asia leading to the 21st century. d. Describe the impact of Communism in China in terms of Mao Zedong, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and Tiananmen Square

Activities: 1) Review! Students will be divided into collaborative learning groups and each group will have at least one student with a smartphone, IPad, DS, etc. a. The students will be answering quick review questions to help refresh our memory about all we have learned about the Communist rise to power in China. i. BYOD/T Option- Students will work together to answer the questions and submit the answers using their technology device, allowing the whole class to review together seeing the various groups answers on the board, using the Instant Polls & Live Audience Response app. This app allows the students and teacher to see how students/groups are responding also allowing everyone to see how other groups are responding (collaborative learning on a small and large scale). ii. No Device Available- Otherwise, students will write all the answers on their group dry erase board and at the end of the group review time that is allotted (first 10 min of class), then all of the groups will share their answers for each question, allowing the whole class to review together. 2) Students will finish their Cornell Notes on the History of Chinas communism. 3) Students will participate in an extension activity on the communist rise in China. a. BYOD/T Option- In their collaborative learning groups, the students will use the YouTube ap available on one device in their group and they will navigate to the Communists, Nationalists, and Chinas Revolutions: Crash Course video made by NeoK12, using the YouTube ap. b. During the video the students will write clarifying facts or additional relevant facts on the left margin of their Cornell Notes to help them remember the facts about Chinas rise to communism. i. No Device Available- We can look as a whole class on the projected video. 4) Students will connect what they are learning to what is going on in the current world.

a. Students will use the New York Times app, CNN News app, or the Fox News app to help them find a current event story that shows how Chinas current communist government is functioning today as a result of their history. b. The students will complete a series of general questions to help guide their analysis of the current event appropriately. i. No Device Avaiable- Students will be given passes to go to the media center and look for current events from the internet on those news sites previously mentioned. 5) Presentation- Each group will present their current event and analysis to the class. 6) Assessment- Students will be assessed based on how well they worked in the groups, how well they practiced digital citizenship and encouraged others to do the same, on their knowledge of the communist rise in China, and how well they involved themselves in the group analysis of the current event.
