Lunada Bay, a neighborhood on the west side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Palos Verdes Estates, was one of the early areas developed as part of the Palos Verdes Project. It may be hard to envision today, with the extensive landscaping and groves of trees which currently exist on the Peninsula, but the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the 1920s primarily consisted of coastal sage brush with very few trees. The Palos Verdes Project in the 1920s and 1930s employed a large number of gardeners who planted trees and plants. A very large nursery was constructed on the current site of Lunada Bay Plaza to grow plants to be used by the Palos Verdes Project. The large median strip down the middle of Palos Verdes Drive West was planned to accommodate the expansion of the Red Car trolley line to the area. Original plans called for the construction of the Lunada Bay shopping plaza on Via Mirola, but it was later built on Yarmouth Road. Original plans also envisioned several recreational facilities which were never constructed. One of these, the proposed Pacific Coast Yacht Club, was to be a million dollar enterprise backed by leading yachtsmen, to be housed in a palatial building south of Bluff Cove, and included a large marina. Another planned improvement was a breakwater to be constructed to form a swim cove at Lunada Bay. The fountain in the median strip of Palos Verdes Drive West in Lunada Bay was a gift

from funds raised by 250 neighborhood children organized by Jeane Burke, a resident of Rocky Point in Lunada Bay, and a plaque at the fountain displays the fountains name: Fuente de los Ninos (the fountain of the children). The fountain is dedicated to G. Brooks Snelgrove, who was the original engineer for the Palos Verdes Project in 1923.The fountain was refurbished in December 2008, paid for by the generous donations of Lunada Bay residents. One interesting event that occurred in 1961, which people still talk about, was the running aground of the Greek freighter Dominator just off of Rocky Point. The freighter was heading south along the Palos Verdes coast line, and thinking they had reached the Los Angeles harbor, made an ill-fated left turn too early and ran aground. Only a small amount of remnants of the ship can still be seen at low tide. A large landslide occurred during the El Nino winter of 1982-1983 above Bluff Cove on Palos Verdes Drive West which caused 2 homes to be destroyed. City drain pipes failed during the heavy rains that winter. The City continues to own seven of the homes which were bought to settle a lawsuit. The City Manager and several police officers lived in the homes for many years, but due to recent slide activity, the city has

After 42 years in real estate, Larry Wolf, Co-owner and Broker at Shorewood Realtors, knows his local beach cities like the back of his hand. We are currently in a very unique market, he says. Very little inventory with multiple offers on almost every listing. Prices are rising. How does a successful agent survive in a turbulent market like ours? Wolf has always concentrated his business on listings rather than buyers. I always advise to our agents to spend the majority of their time prospecting for listings. He also observes that new construction is making a comeback. The builders were quiet during the recession, but are now out in full force and looking for buildable lots. Construction financing is available again. We have five of the top builders in the area on our staff, so we are very involved in the development and sale of new homes. With the end of the recession has also come community revamping, such as the Playa El Segundo expansion and the Manhattan Mall redevelopment: events that herald more prosperity for us locals. Obviously, the health of the business community is important to the real estate market. Wolf cites the continued excellence of local beach cities schools as just one more sign that things are moving in the right direction, making the South Bay such an attractive place to live. I love the South Bay, he admits. I cant imagine living or working anywhere else. The market is dynamic, and I believe, as I have for the last 42 years, that real estate is the best long term investment that anyone can make. Since coming on board Shorewood Realtors in 1979, Wolf has seen the company change and grow in a multitude of ways, including during this past year. Shorewood recently opened a new office in downtown Manhattan Beach at 916 Manhattan Avenue. We have been looking for a downtown location for a while and Im very excited about being there, he says. This is Shorewoods third Manhattan Beach office, so weve definitely got the city covered geographically. Wolf is also exceptionally excited that his two sons, Alex and Tyler Wolf, have been with Shorewood for the past six years. It gives me a different perspective, looking at the business through their eyes, and affords me the opportunity to pass on to them the benefit of my years of experience. And he does have years of experience, but he wasnt always an agent and broker. After spending a decade out of college as an environmental engineer in the aerospace industry, Wolf took a night course to learn more about real estate and went on to get his license. I decided to try sales part time and within 60 days, I loved it so much, I quit my engineering job and went full time. That was in 1971 and Ive never looked back. My first year was magic! The market was great, every day was a new adventure and I knew it was something Id happily be doing the rest of my life. Its been a very interesting ride.

As the owner of Spyder Surfboards and a longtime surfer and resident of Hermosa Beach, Dennis Jarvis is full of knowledge when it comes to the history of surfing and just how great of a surf city Hermosa Beach was at one time. South Bay Digs caught up with Jarvis to chat about how surfing has changed the past few decades, the local legends of the sport and what he sees for the future of surfing.

SCENE

What has changed in surfing over the past few decades? It has all been about technology. Through the 1960s and possibly before, the advent of polyurethane foam blanks created a lighter surfboard. That was a huge bonus at the time and became much more mainstream. It actually grew into a really flourishing business throughout the South Bay. This is where the Greg Nolls and the Dewey Webers started. The lighter surfboard allowed us to have more style in the maneuvers. They really started exploring different designs which brought a whole new standard. The surfboard performed under your feet. Surfers then had specific styles catered to the board they liked, so when a guy took off on a wave at 16th street, you knew who is was. Over the years here, we can see a change in board performance and the technical aspects of the board that has helped people do so many different maneuvers. People dont realize that where we are in the advancement of the surfboard is so much father along then anything we ever thought it would be. Why have so many Hermosa Beach surfing legends been forgotten? If we had better waves, wed have more eyeballs on the city. Wed be more of a cultivator of surfing and skating. The things of today are still inspired by the guys that created it. We have a cycle in the surfing world, just like other sports. Everyone had a unique style in the 70s around here. The whole professional California movement kind of started here with Mike Purpus and Mike Benavidez and Chris Barela and Terry Stevens. They got it going. These incredible surfers then went out on the world stage and proved that we could do it. Ted Robinson had a quick style with very little arm movement and was a top 16 surfer. Chris Frohoff is another. He went up against the best in the world

and would win two contests in one day and his arms were more like a bird the way his wrists were held. Everyone would try to emulate him. These guys are legends in the California scene, but arent getting enough acclaim. The thinking in the world of surfing now on Hermosa Beach is that it is a dying resource for the professional world. Not too many people have come out of here recently. This was the hot bed at one time. People at the Hermosa Beach community center are doing a great thing by keeping it alive, but the city itself is doing a huge disservice by not utilizing the history of surfing here. They could really step it up. I could go down a list of about 50 people who deserve to be honored in some way, but have never received that attention. What would you do to bring more of an awareness to the history of surfing in Hermosa Beach? If you dont get the youth behind the sport, you are out of business. The issue with that is that it is making these guys irrelevant, especially to the youth who likely dont know who they are. Bring in these guys and make it relevant again. As the owner of Spyder Surfboards, I need to make that 10-year old kid love surfing and learn about it. It is a loss if these guys arent known. How has the culture of surfing changed since youve been involved in the sport? So many of the surfers today come off very corporate. What happened to the fun? A lot of the fun has been sucked out of it and turned into a dollar sign. When it turned from a $15 million industry to a $60 billion industry is when things changed. You have companies like Hollister, Target and Walmart, where they are making $50 billion and are sucking the fun out of it. The majority of the top 30 surfers are super corporate. You want to have ambassadors to grow the sport. You need people at the top who are fresh and different. To sell

yourself, you really need to be talented and also have a great personality that keeps people interested in you. What do you see for the future of the sport? It scares me. What Im afraid of is that we are getting to the end of the perceived value because the kids dont get the value. We need to build back the relationship with the surfing enthusiast. The product because of these bigger companies has been diluted and it needs to be plugged in once again. If I was surfing in todays world, Id be out there looking for a sponsor instead of just going out to surf and watching my favorite locals guys, like I did when I was younger. Unheard of stuff is happening right now when it comes to tricks. How much further can it go? People will probably start to switch their stances up or try to separate from the surfboard like they do in motocross. What was it like when you were on tour and how does it compare to the professional surfers today? It was all about doing hard carves and 360 degree turns when I was on the tour and now it is all about how high you can get from the wave and then landing it. What I see now is more consistency and speed with the top pros because of the equipment. They are getting to places on the wave that we never could. They are pretty much able to do everything you can and want to do on a skateboard. What would you do to keep the sport prominent? If I had an opportunity and was at the board meetings of these big companies, Id say you need to stop being so technical about everything. Where is the fun? Surfing is fun. That is missing. The guys in the 1960s would fall asleep on the beach in Malibu because they wanted to be the first ones out in the water the next morning. Where is that at? We are missing that right now. You need to get back to the core of surfing. It is a relaxing thing and can be spiritual for others. Im a big fan of surfing. It should be fun and is fun.

materials to the underground surfers. Ryan did the shaping, while Ed and Ralph did all the glassing. It was the best, enthuses Talbot. Everyone in the surfing community was

there to help. It wasnt about the money. But there was a certain stoke in the air that was and still is hard to explain. Talbot describes this unique period as a time when there was no goal, other

than not getting a haircut and fighting the establishment. An establishment that they obviously later became a part of. But at least in our minds the fact of not getting totally sucked in made it all worthwhile, says Talbot. And Talbot doesnt forget who got him started in the first place. Greg Noll influenced me the most during that part of my life, not only as a boss employees at E.T. Surf. Daniel Del Castillo has been the store manager at E.T. for over 25 years, and he credits Talbot with being the main reason why hes still there. Hes made it to where I could stay hes such a great guy, explains Del Castillo. What started out for E. T. as selling surfboards and related items has evolved into skateboards, shorts, tee shirts, boogie boards, snowboards, and countless other items, all with a laid-back feel. Change is the one constant in our business, says Talbot. We dictate nothing. Stop into E.T. Boards had become shorter and guys began building their own boards, Talbot explains. The mind set was that all the large board builders were in the business of business and that surfing had lost its soul. Talbot had started out working for Greg Noll, the legendary local board shaper, who allowed a certain amount of catering to the underground by selling blanks and resin to surfers wanting to build their own specialized boards. This was a move that was counter to his [Nolls] best interests, but I feel it was his way of sympathizing with the real heart of surfing, says Talbot. Talbot, meanwhile, was just having fun surfing and describes himself during this time as, far from ready to join the real world. However, he knew a decision would have to be made soon: take surfing seriously, or be a part of his own world. As Noll was retiring soon, he offered to let Talbot take over the business. Cautious about taking on the stores accumulated debt, Talbot joined up with Pat Ryan, Ed Sakal, Ralph Houghtby and Billy Robinson all of whom had left Noll on good terms -and E. T. was born.

South Bay residents Brian and Eva Sweeney had a dilemma. As art collectors, they could no longer find space on the walls of their home to hang artwork. Trying to figure out how to solve that problem, Brian thought about finding a storage unit and placing all of the unhung artwork there. It was only when he saw a place for sale in El Segundo that he had the idea of opening a space to showcase the art, which locals now know as ESMoA. Opening a little less than five months ago at 208 Main Street in the heart of El Segundo, ESMoA has been quite popular with the local community.

basic drawing materials. It will also host an event called Experiences in Embodiment: The Art of Yoga on July 12. Then on July 20, ESMoA will help explore the history of nudity in western art from antiquity to today in Discover Truth: The nude in art. Everyone is excited to see what is new and fresh. The appreciation for art grows the more you see it. You get more out of it the more knowledgeable you become, Brian Sweeney said. We are trying to mix it all up. Well have a 15th century piece next to one that was made just a few years ago. We have all different types of mediums next to each other. Focused on art education, Brian and Eva also enjoy having schools from El Segundo and the surrounding communities come to ESMoA. With so many school districts cutting back on their art programs, Brian sees the space as a kid friendly atmosphere that can take less than 30 minutes to explore. People tend to think differently when surrounded by art. Art helps people become more creative and make them more well rounded, Brian Sweeney said. We are extremely happy with the amount of people that are coming through the space. It has definitely exceeded our expectations. I never imagined that this is where we would be. I just wanted to have a warehouse to be able to look at the artwork once in a while. I started trying to find an inexpensive place to put them, when I came across the spot in El Segundo, Brian Sweeney said. I started thinking some more and talked to the mayor and realized this would be a great way for people to see fine art. We wanted to build a space that would be free and open to the public. Showcasing 35 to 40 works of art for about three months during each exhibit, ESMoAs current exhibit is called Truth and runs until August 25. Some of the highlights include works from Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Robert Mapplethorpe and Gustav Klimt. Five pieces in the current exhibit have even hung at the Getty. Just in the next month, ESMoA will also have three different events. The first is Drop-in Life Drawing (July 7, 14, 21. 28), a free workshop with draped models and
