my problem is Malayalam fonts.
Hope you know the interesting story about editing

Spices Expert, National Agril.Res. Institute, Mon Repos, Guyana, S. America

Legendary
Mangattachan was the
minister par excellence
of one of the Zamorin
kings who ruled Calicut
during 1342- 1792 AD.

Calicut shot in to fame as a major port of Malabar

Coast after 14th century. Spices especially black
pepper was the main item of trade during those
days. Arabs, followed by Chinese and Europeans
came to Calicut one after another in search of
black pepper and other spices.

black pepper. The rooted lateral branches grow as

bush instead of vine and hence it is called Bush
pepper .Usually in black pepper, the runner shoots
or rarely the climbing shoots are used for
propagation which grow out as vines. Bush pepper,
as a cash crop, can be grown in the field at a
spacing of 2x2m.It also ideal to grow as potted
plants in apartments/flats
as it has the twin
benefits of an ornamental plant and a spice! It
defies the season and location. Any black pepper
variety can be made to be bush pepper by planting
out the rooted lateral branches.

Healthy lateral branches of 2-4 nodes with all the

leaves except the top leaf removed are used for
rooting. The cut end of these laterals are dipped in
the rooting hormone, Ceradix-B and planted in
polythene bags (45x30cm, 200 gauge) half filled
Aghast by the foolish act of his otherwise shrewd with moist coir dust. The open end of the polythene
and clever minister, Zamorin summoned and bags are tightened after blowing air in to it, to avoid
moisture loss and kept under shade.
grilled him.

Lured by the prospects of growing black pepper in

their country, some
Europeans managed
Mangattachan to part with a piece of runner shoot
of black pepper for raising plantations in Europe.

Yes, me Lord, I gave the runner shoots,

confessed Mangattachan but not the Thiruvathira
njattuvela(south west monsoon), added the
astute Mangattachan, implying that without south
west monsoon and the specific climate of Kerala
,black pepper will not grow and flourish!
Brilliant my boy, saluting the wisdom of his pet
minister Zamorin patted him on his back, so goes
the legend.
That was the state of the art of the things during
Zamorins time, 200-300 years ago. Things have
moved far beyond the practice of raising black
pepper from only planting runner shoots during
the south west monsoon time. Neither
Mangattachan nor his King had the slightest
inkling of bush pepper .If not so, the legendary
Mangattachan would never have given such a
reply and the Zamorin would not have felt happy
about the incident Obviously that was a slip of
Mangattachan.

Two-three laterals can be planted in one bag.

These bags serve as humid chambers. After about
2 months the laterals produce roots which can be
observed through the transparent polythene bags.
At this stage the bags are opened and the laterals
are carefully taken out and planted in small
polythene bags filled with sand, soil and cow
manure (1:1:1) and further nurtured under shade for
another 1-2 months. Once established these
laterals can be planted in pots or field. OctoberJanuary is the ideal period for rooting laterals.
FarmYard Manure (FYM) @ 200 g / NPK @ 1, 0.5,2
g per pot may be applied once in 3months.
Bush pepper start flowering from the first year of
planting and they continue to flower and produce
berries throughout the year. From a well grown bush
pepper one can get an yield of about 1 kg green
pepper by the third year

It never occurred to me, Me Lord perhaps

Mangattachans soul might be consoling the soul of
Zamorin! Whatever it may be, time has proved that
Bush pepper is the rooted and grown lateral what Mangattachan told to Zamorin while at Calicut
was a bit of boasting!

The Pravasi Bandhu Trust, one of several support groups

working among Indian expatriates, will conduct a series of
workshops in the Gulf countries to create awareness on saving
habits.
The workshops targeting low and middle income expatriates will
begin in Doha on February 12 followed by Bahrain and Saudi
Arabia.
We have been conducting similar classes for low earning workers in the UAE since 2001 after forming
the PBT which is registered in India under the Charities Act. We create awareness on the need for
decent savings and retirement plans, Mr. K V Shamsudheen, chairman of the PBT, said.
According to a survey conducted by the PBT, only 5% of the expatriates said they had enough money
saved to take care of their family.
I went to the UAE in 1971 and I have seen many people who return home without enough resources
after decades of hard work. I have since been working among them to create awareness on systematic
investment options, Shamsudheen said.
A member of the core group formed by the Kerala government
to advise on the newly incorporated Al-Barakah Financial
Services Limited for Shariah-compliant financial products,
Mr. Shamsudheen was in the Kerala capital to attend its first
meeting recently. He also counsels expatriates in despair by
phone.
We conduct a two-hour interactive programme titled For a
Better Tomorrow. We have so far conducted 184 programmes
attended by more than 70,000 non-resident Indians in Bahrain,
Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and various parts of the UAE and in
India, he said.
The PBT had also conducted similar programmes in the Kerala towns of Thrissur, Chavakkad, Tirur,
Kozikkode and Kannur for NRI dependents with the co-operation of socio-cultural organisations,
religious groups and alumni of local institutions.
The topics covered include how to become a disciplined, sincere and successful worker, tegh need for
savings from the earnings, avoidable expenses and extravaganza, the curse of interest on borrowings
and credit card traps.
Investment options like real estate, agriculture, jewellery, insurance, fixed deposit, mutual funds and
stocks and comparison on the rate of returns and risk factors are also discussed
