Romanias CavalRy
Romania started the war with the Soviet Union with
six Cavalry Brigades, based on 12 Rosiori and 6 Clrasi
Regiments, while the other 7 Clrasi Regiments were used
for the Reconnaissance units of larger formations. Due to
their elite nature they were some of the frst units to undergo
mechanisation. During the course of the war the Romanian
Cavalry underwent substantial organisational change, frst
motorising some units with trucks and motorcycles and then
the expansion of the brigades into divisions in 1942.
In 1942 each Cavalry Division had three cavalry regi-
ments, two were horse mounted and one was motorised.
Te Romanian cavalry were skilled mounted infantrymen,
whether operating from horseback or from motor transport
and fulflled the roll of elite mobile infantry rather than tra-
ditional sabre waving cavalry.
Like most European nations to be involved in the wars of
the late 19
th
Century, the Romanians had learnt the lessons
of modern combat and retrained their cavalry as mounted
infantry before the First World War.

Romanian Special RuleS
peasant aRmy
Romanias huge army was drawn from the rural peasant class,
ofcered by the aristocratic upper class, and disciplined by
NCOs using 18th century style corporal punishment. Men
were regularly beaten for minor breaches in regulation and
discipline. Te separation of men, NCOs, and ofcers even
went as far as meals that were supplied in three qualities,
with ofcers, naturally, getting the best. Te ofcers were
also responsible for the training of their own units. Tis led
to a great variation in the quality of troops combat prepared-
ness. Te distant relationship between the ofcers and their
largely illiterate men combined with the harsh conditions of
army life, and sometimes poor training, led to mixed levels
of performance and morale in the feld.
To refect the variable quality of the men and ofcers re-
lationship and performance, Romanian platoons are rated
as Regular or Elite. After deployment, but before the frst
turn, roll a die for each Romanian platoon and independent
Warrior teams. Consult the Peasant Army table to determine
their Skill and Motivation ratings. Platoons held in Reserves
do not roll until they arrive.

defend the homeland
Tough the Romanian infantryman may have mixed treat-
ment from his ofcers and NCOs, once in the thick of the
fghting he would often fght tenaciously when confronted
by the enemy. Tey were not interested in invading Russia
or conquering the world, but to simply fght stubbornly to
defend what they already had.
When Romanian platoons test their Motivation to
Counterattack in assaults, you may re-roll the die and apply
the re-rolled result to all Romanian platoons that failed on
the original roll.
fRenCh doCtRine
Te Romanian troops are trained in the French doctrine of
trench warfare. Teir operational plan is to make a short
deliberate advance under cover of massed artillery fre, then
fortify their position to hold it while the artillery comes up
to repeat the process. While the advance is slow, it is sure and
will eventually result in the defeat of the enemy.
Once entrenched, Romanian infantry set up crossfre posi-
tions for every weapon allowing them to take any attack in
enflade.
Romanian Infantry and Gun teams attempting to Dig In
succeed on a roll of 3+.
When conducting Defensive Fire, Infantry and Gun teams
that are Dug In or in Entrenchments can shoot over any
Man-packed or Light Gun teams that are also Dug In or in
Entrenchments.

spotting teams for Artillery Bombardments.

Tere were never enough of the powerful 7.5cm PaK40 anti-
tank gun, so the infantry divisions had to make do with the
7.5cm PaK97/38, an old French gun mounted on a PaK38
chassis or captured Russian 7.62cm guns rechambered for
German ammunition.

was often repositioned to support Romanian troops during
