Teacher receives fellowship through Earthwatch
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Gregory Wilkinson, a seventh-
grade math teacher at William
Allen Middle School, is embark-
ing on a two-week expedition to
study climate change and caterpil-
lars in Arizona.
Its a science-based trip for
environmental research, he said.
Wilkinson was granted a fel-
lowship opportunity through
Earthwatch an environmental
nonprofit organization whose
mission is to engage people in
worldwide science field research
and education. He said he was
originally going to Ecuador doing
similar research.
The trip didnt have enough
funding to take people from differ-
ent geographical locations, he
said.
According to Wilkinson, he will
help research parasitoids para-
sites that live in caterpillars to
see how they are affected by cli-
mate, as well as looking into cater-
pillar defenses and natural vege-
tation.
According to the expedition de-
scription on Earthwatchs web-
site, volunteers will help scien-
tists determine the types of cater-
pillars collected, if they have been
attacked by parasites and plants
the caterpillars seem to favor. The
data collected would help estab-
lish a solution to the excessive

Michael Gural, a student from
Moorestown, was recently hon-
ored as one of the brightest
young students in the nation at a
statewide awards ceremony for
academically advanced children
sponsored by The Johns Hopkins
University Center for Talented
Youth.
The center honored Gural, a
participant in the CTY Talent
Search, for his exceptional per-
formance on a rigorous, above-
grade-level test given to
academically talented second-
through-eighth-grade students.
During the CTY Talent Search,
which is going on now, advanced
young learners take above-grade
level tests designed for older stu-
dents as a means of gaining in-
sight into their abilities.
Seventh and eighth graders
take the SAT or ACT the same
tests used for college admissions.
These students, along with
second through sixth graders,
can take the School and College
Ability Test, an above-level test.
Gural, a student at William
Allen Middle School, was one of
more than 40,000 students from
more than 120 countries who par-
ticipated in the CTY Talent
Search.
Because of the difficulty of the
tests, only 25 to 30 percent of stu-
dents who participated earned an
invitation to a CTY Awards Cere-
mony where they are individual-
ly honored for their academic
performance and potential.
Most students honored in 2013
CTY Award Ceremonies also
qualified academically for CTY's
summer courses and online
classes.
"Today we face critical global
problems that require the best
minds of the future to solve using
discipline, creativity, and innova-
tion," said Elaine Tuttle Hansen,
executive director of CTY.
"It's inspiring and reassuring
to see this group of some of the
best and brightest students
emerging and to know that they
will become tomorrow's thought
leaders and innovators."
This spring, some 13,700 CTY
Talent Search honorees were in-
vited to participate in 49 CTY
Award Ceremonies at 27 sites.
New Jersey's 2013 ceremonies
were scheduled at Rowan Univer-
sity, Rutgers University and
Ramapo College.

vegetation damage found in past
research that is caused by the in-
creasing population of the Chi-
nese tallow a caterpillar intro-
duced from China.
Wilkinson said some caterpil-
lars are being born sooner, mak-
ing it more difficult for the para-
sitoids to develop and feed on the
caterpillar.
The increase in caterpillars af-
fects the amount of vegetation,
he said, adding the change of cli-
mate also affects the increasing
population.
From reading about the re-
search online, Wilkinson said he
is looking forward to living in a
research facility for 11 days.
I am hoping to learn a lot more
when I am on the trip, he said.
Wilkinson will be stationed in
the Southwestern Research Sta-
tion, which is 5,400 feet above sea
level. The research team will be
stationed at the facility, but will be
collecting data around the Chiric-
ahua Mountains, which can reach
9,300 feet above sea level and are
home to five types of habitats, ac-
cording to Earthwatchs website.
When the 2013-2014 school year
begins, the goal is to take what he
has learned in the field and teach
it to his students.
Although he is a math teacher,
Wilkinson said he has always had
an interest in both math and sci-
ence.
He graduated from
Moorestown High School in 1999,
went to Towson University, gradu-
ating with a degree in elementary
education with an emphasis in
math and science, and attended
Wilmington University for his
masters in supervisory leader-
ship and Walden University for
his doctorate in teacher leader-
ship.
Seventy percent of the time
Wilkinson will be out in the field.
He will spend the rest of the time
inputting data and creating statis-
tical models.
I have always liked math. So,
for me, I am curious to see what
type of mathematics and statis-
tics they are using to analyze the
data, he said.
To be selected for the fellow-
ship, Wilkinson had to fill out ap-
plications and write an essay.
In my essay, I wrote them and
told them I loved being outside,
he said.
Last summer, he spent 31 days
on the road, hiked the Grand
Canyon and spent time at
Yosemite National Park and other
national parks.
After the review process, the or-
ganization asked if he could with-
stand rigorous conditions. With
his experience and love for the
outdoors, Wilkinson was selected.
He said he heard about the op-
portunity from middle school
teacher Dan Smith.
By sharing his experience in
Arizona with his students and
others, he hopes it would open the
doors for not only other teachers
to take advantage of these oppor-
tunities, but for students to do the
same.
The organization also offers
programs for high school students
where they can partner with a
teacher. Earthwatch has a lot of
different programs. I think it
would be a great experience for
them. Its not even so much as a
resume builder but just to go out
and see what the world is like and
try to make a difference, he said.
Wilkinson will be leaving July
28 and will return Aug. 7.

MHS alum hopes to
play for Predators
this upcoming season
By NICK COHEN
The Moorestown Sun
From St. Johns in Newfound-
land, Canada, to Portland Ore., to
Rochester and Buffalo, N.Y., as
well as a brief stop in Florida,
Moorestown native TJ Brennan
is still hoping to make a name for
himself playing in the National
Hockey League.
He will have another opportu-
nity to do so once the season be-
gins in October, this time in
Nashville.
Brennan, a defenseman, was
traded from the Florida Panthers
to the Nashville Predators on
June 14 in exchange for forward
Bobby Butler.
This is part of the game. My
responsibility is to stay focused
and stay true to myself, Bren-
nan said.
The former Moorestown Quak-
er made his NHL debut in 2012
with the Buffalo Sabres, scoring
his first goal in his first game
against the Boston Bruins, an ex-
perience Brennan described as
surreal.
He continued to split time be-
tween the Sabres and their Amer-
ican Hockey League affiliate in
Rochester until Buffalo traded
him to the Florida Panthers in
March for a draft pick.
The bouncing around between
teams and leagues admittedly
has been difficult, Brennan said,
but he has been able to lean on
his support network.
It is still amazing how much
support Ive gotten from the com-
munity and from my family and
friends back home, Brennan
said.
Its definitely been tough at
times but its great to know how
much support I have.
In his time with Buffalo and
Florida last season, Brennan had
one goal in 10 games with the
Sabres, and two goals and seven
assists in 19 games with the Pan-
thers.
Brennan also had 14 goals and
21 assists in 36 games with
Rochester.
A young player who has been
traded twice in three months and
who will be on his third team in
just two seasons can be looked at
in one of two ways.
One is that the player has
failed to make an impact and will
not be given many more opportu-
nities to showcase his skills until
eventually he is no longer in the
league.
The other is that the player has
shown enough in flashes that
teams will continue to give him a
shot.
For Brennan, he hopes it is the
latter.
There are a lot of players at
the NHL level, and not much sep-
arates one player from the next
when playing at the highest level.
I know its important to be men-
tally focused and concentrate on
the details, Brennan said. I
know what to do, I just need to be
more consistent.
Brennan will spend part of the
offseason here in Moorestown
playing roller hockey as well as
spending time with friends and
family.
He said that with a new team
and new city awaiting him, the
time spent at home would be es-
pecially valued.

F
or once, New Jersey should get
some positive national atten-
tion. Last week, the state made
two major moves in a public higher ed-
ucation reorganization in an attempt
to put New Jersey colleges on the na-
tional map.
Rutgers University added two new
medical schools, immediately jumping
the school into the top 25 in the coun-
try for research funding. Gov. Christie
said it puts Rutgers on the path to
being one of Americas great research
institutions.
Rowan University also became a re-
search university through the reor-
ganization, giving New Jersey a solid
foothold of attractive public colleges
in the southern part of the state.
New Jersey is the 11th most popu-
lous state, with 8.8 million people, as of
July 1, 2012, despite being the fourth
smallest state in terms of size. Howev-
er, due to a lack of major public uni-
versities, many of the Garden States
college students were traveling to
neighboring states for higher educa-
tion.
Penn State University, Temple Uni-
versity, the University of Delaware,
the State University of New York, the
University of Maryland and the Uni-
versity of Connecticut are all popular
public school choices for New Jersey
students.
Over the last 10 years, Rutgers and
Rowan have made great strides in
keeping students in our home state,
and last weeks moves only further
that aim. We must continue to im-
prove our public universities, in addi-
tion to focusing on our local K-12 pub-
lic school districts.
If we keep our home-grown stu-
dents in state for public higher educa-
tion, then were all able to reap the re-
wards. If were able to go even further,
well be able to attract outside talent,
and become part of the list of dream
colleges for out-of-state students.
New Jersey is filled with promising
students and bright minds ready to be-
come world leaders.
Lets continue to foster that intelli-
gence, that drive and that desire right
here in New Jersey.
Producing more home-grown talent
Improvements at Rutgers, Rowan may keep students in-state for college

PAIN
How does the pain reliever know to go where your body hurts?
It doesn't! In this country we treat pain like it was a deficiency of
some pain medication. Pain is a warning sign that tissue in the body
is damaged. When we take a pain reliever it does nothing to correct
what is causing the pain, it just decreases the pain signal in the
brain. Many pain relievers are Marketed for their Anti Inflammatory
benefit, however Ice would be a safer alternative. Pain relievers are
necessary when you have your wisdom teeth out, but the experience
is short term and not a way of life. Chiropractic is trying to locate the
cause of the pain. Many conditions result from nerve interference in
the spine. Chiropractic can locate that nerve interference.

Ravitz Markets donates
$15K to McDonald house
Ravitz Family Markets, owners
and operators of five ShopRite su-
permarkets in Burlington and
Camden counties, presented a
$15,000 donation to Ronald Mc-
Donald House Charities of the
Philadelphia Region, at the non-
profits recent telethon.
The donation was made on be-
half of the stores Cares Commit-
tee, which is an employee-man-
aged initiative that drives many
of the Ravitz Family Markets
outreach programs in the com-
munities its stores serve.
Cares members choose pro-
grams to support; raise funds
through nearly 1,000 fellow em-
ployees, customers and vendors;
and award donations.
Cares also provided volunteers
that staffed the telethons phone
bank.
Ronald McDonald House is a
non-profit organization that cre-
ates, finds, and supports pro-
grams that directly improve the
health and well-being of children
in the community.
Throughout its 40 years in
business, Ravitz Family Markets
has been a long-time supporter of
key community efforts, including
The Ravitz Family Foundation,
which aids children and families
in need by providing grants to
local charitable organizations.
Advisor supports back
to school campaign
Michael Iaquinto, an Edward
Jones financial advisor in
Moorestown, is supporting a back
to school donation campaign by
using his office as a drop-off loca-
tion for the school supplies drive.
Local residents and businesses
may help those less fortunate in
the community by bringing in
items to the Edward Jones branch
office during regular business
hours from July 29 to Sept. 6.
"We're asking Moorestown resi-
dents to donate school supplies or
volunteer their time," Iaquinto
said. "These donations can add
value as one more student will be
provided with the appropriate
tools to begin or continue his or
her learning and development.
The branch address is 67 East
Main St., Moorestown.
