Slocan Lake Dance Camp
5, 6, 7, 8 the countdown is on! Te Slocan Lake Dance

Art As Activism Panel Discussion
How can art create social change? What role do the
arts play in society? Tese are some of the questions that
will be explored in the Art as Activism panel discussion,
taking place Tursday, July 11 at Expressions. Tis lively
conversation will include slides of artwork by the panelists

be invited to ask questions and ofer their own ideas and

Open Fire Ban
Efective at noon on July 8, all open
fres are prohibited within the South-
east Fire Centres jurisdiction to help
prevent human-caused wildfres and
protect public safety. Te prohibition
will remain in place until September
20 or until the public is otherwise
notifed.
Specifcally, prohibited activities in-
clude:
Te burning of any waste, slash or
other materials;
Stubble or grass fres of any size over any area;
Te use of freworks, sky lanterns, or burning barrels
of any size or description.
Te prohibition does not restrict campfres that are a half-
metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and does not
apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.
Campfres must not be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5
metres in size. Anyone lighting a campfre must maintain
a freguard by removing fammable debris from around
the campfre area and must have a hand tool or at least
eight litres of water available nearby to properly extin-
guish the fre. Make sure that that the campfre is fully
extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before
leaving the area for any length of time.
Tis prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private
lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local
governments that have forest fre prevention bylaws and
are serviced by a fre department. Please check with civic
authorities for any restrictions before lighting a fre.
Anyone found in contravention of an open fre pro-
hibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted
in court, be fned up to $100,000 and sentenced to one
year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to
a wildfre, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to
$10,000 and be ordered to pay all frefghting and associ-
ated costs.
Crews from the Southeast Fire Centre have responded
to 27 wildfres since April 1 (22 caused by humans and
fve caused by lightning), which have burned a total of
168 hectares.
Te Southeast Fire Centre encompasses an area ex-
tending from the US border in the south to Mica Dam in
the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Mona-
shee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in
the east. Tis includes the Selkirk and Rocky Mountain
districts.

Rescued
Grizzly Cubs
Reeturn to the
Kootenays
Two male grizzly bear
cubs named Blair and Terry,
who were orphaned in Brit-
ish Columbias Kootenays
in the fall of 2012, are on
the road back to freedom.
Te cubs were orphaned
in October when they were
eight months old afer their
mother came into confict with humans and was killed.
Tey were rescued and raised in captivity and are now
ready to be released close to their home range.
Te bears have spent the last seven months at the North-
ern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS -www.wildlifeshelter.
com) rehabilitation centre where they were raised in large
enclosures with very limited human contact until they
were old enough, strong enough and had the skills to be
released back to the wild. Tey will travel by road from
Smithers to an area outside of Castlegar inside individual
culvert traps on a fatbed truck. Each will be ftted with
a satellite collar and released on June 18, 2013 into a re-
mote area away from human activity and monitored for
18 months.
Te rescue, transport and release of the grizzlies is part of
a unique cooperative pilot project between the International
Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org), the North-
ern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS - www.wildlifeshetler.
com) and the British Columbia Ministries of Environment,
and Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
Te project will study whether releasing orphaned griz-
zlies is viable. Tis is the fourth time such a release has
taken place. Two bears were released in July of 2008, two
in the summer of 2009 and four in the summer of 2011.
So far, eight grizzly cubs have been re-introduced
to the wild as part of this pilot project, said Angelika
Langen of NLWS. Its our hope that this work will help to
save even more grizzlies.
Tracking the movements of the grizzlies using satellite
collars is providing vital information on the movements
of the bears, said John Beecham, bear specialist with
IFAW. Its a key part of the project that helps us to sci-
entifcally validate whether what were doing is working.
Human-bear confict is an ongoing concern in areas
like the Kootenays, and the reason why these two bears
were orphaned in the frst place. For tips on how to re-

Will Stroets performances are ofen described as bilin-
gual rock concerts for kids. Songs like Bike Safety Boogie
and Full of Beans have the audience dancing and singing
to the catchy beat.

Coming this fall to a community near you! Te Regional
District of Central Kootenay is pleased to announce that
there will be fve household hazardous waste round-up
events this fall. Free disposal for residential household
hazardous waste will be available to all residents of the
RDCK and RDCK municipalities. Time to get rid of those
nasty toxic hazardous materials hiding under your kitch-
en sink, in your garage and in your garden shed. Find the
event nearest you and join in the round-up!

of superstition and the disintegration of their community.
Te State of Wonder, by Ann Patchett takes us to the

Alone in the Classroom, by Elizabeth Hay, our guest au-

Summer is fnally here and with it, the sounds of laugh-

Archaeological Site
Students from Hamilton and Selkirk
Colleges are at the important Slocan Nar-
rows Archaeological Site for the next three
weeks carefully excavating in one of the
oldest and largest pithouses on the Inter-
ior Plateau. Under the direction of Ham-
ilton Colleges Nathan Goodale and Alissa
Nauman, the 11 students and two Teach-
ing Assistants have been on-site since
June 10. Tis is the fourth feld school to
be held at this site, the others taking place
in 2000, 2009 and 2011.
Radio-carbon dating of a piece of charcoal
recovered from this pithouse in 2009 indi-
cates that it burned down about 2750 years
ago. To put that date in perspective, that
makes habitation of this pithouse contem-
porary with the founding of Rome by Rom-
ulus and Remus in 753 BC. But except
for its unusually large size that is all that is
known about the pithouse at this time.
Excavations this year are intended to
expose a portion of the foor to search for
clues as to how many people might have
lived in it and what activities took place in-
side the house. Was the pithouse occupied
only once, or was it rebuilt several times?
Was there a ceremonial aspect to its use
or was it strictly residential? Tese and
many other questions may be answered
by what is found this year.
On Saturday, July 13, the archaeologic-
al feld school is hosting a public open
house at the site with small-group in-
formative lectures by Nathan Goodale
followed by guided tours of the site. Te
open house takes place between 11 am
and 2 pm with new guided tours begin-
ning every 20 minutes until 1:30 pm.
Tis event will be very inter-active with
lots of opportunity for you to ask ques-
tions. A suggested donation of $10 will
cover a BBQ lunch to be served by the
Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society with
the remainder going to cover further in-
terpretive signage and other enhance-
ments along the Slocan Valley Rail Trail.
Tere are currently two very informative
interpretive signage panels near the site
with pictures and information about pre-
historic settlement of the area.
To get to the site, park at the Slocan
Valley Rail Trails Kennedy Road (Lemon
Creek) trailhead and walk or bike north
along the level rail trail. Allow 15 minutes
from the time you park to walk to the site.

Outdoors program visited Castlegars
Kinnaird Elementary this week with a trip
to Syringa Provincial Park. Grade-four
classes took part in an all day hike on the
Yellow Pine Trail and learned about plant
identifcation, photosynthesis and the lo-
cal ecosystem. Classroom with Outdoors
is a school-based environmental educa-
tion program provided to schools across
the Columbia Basin. Columbia Power

Llewellyn Matthews (back row-centre),
Director of Environment, took time out to
visit students and educators at the end of
