STREET Judas paces around uncertainly. Armed Soldiers and some Temple guards enter carrying lanterns and torches Soldier Judas Soldier Judas Soldier Judas Hey! Em - Yes? Are you Judas Iscariot? Are you with my thirty pieces of silver. You look like a very greedy man. Arent we all? He who is without sin let him judge first. Without me you wouldnt have him.

Soldier hands Judas a sac of money Judas begins to count the money. Soldier Judas: Dont worry, the chief priest counted your thirty pieces of silver himself. Dont mind me, I am an accountant. I have to make sure. Lets go.

Judas leads the crowd away. Soldier Judas Soldier Judas Soldier Soldier Judas Soldier Judas You know who this Jesus is? I just ate with him. So where this Jesus now? He went to the garden in Gethsemane near the Kidron stream By this time of night? Is it for some kind of political meeting No. we meet there for prayers. So how will we know this Jesus? The man I kiss is the one you want. Arrest him!

Jesus, Peter, James and John sing as they walk along. Jesus This very night all of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. But after I am raised to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you. I will never leave you, even though all the rest do! I tell you that before the cock crows tonight, you will deny me three times; saying that you do not know me. I will never say that, even if I have to die with you! The disciples bow down and begin prayer and dose off. Jesus throws himself down on the ground. Jesus My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.

Jesus rises and returns the disciples and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, Jesus How is it that you three were not able to keep watch with me for even one hour?

Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to the power of sinners.46 Get up, let us go. Look, here is the man who is betraying me!

GARDEN Judas arrives with the Soldiers. Jesus Crowd Jesus Who is it you are looking for? Jesus of Nazareth! I am he!

The Crowd moves back and falls to the ground. Jesus Crowd Jesus Again I ask, who is it you are looking for? Jesus of Nazareth! I have already told you that I am he, If, then, you are looking for me, let these others go.

Judas walks to Jesus and kisses him. Judas Soldier Peace be with you, Master. Arrest him!

Peter draws his sword and strikes Malchus, cutting off his right ear. High Priest's slave. John Peter easy, thats the high priest servant.

Peter, Put your sword back in its place! Do you think that I will not drink the cup of suffering which my Father has given me? Arrest Him! And tie him up! To the High Priests palace! Lets go; I know the high priest.

Soldiers John

CAIAPHAS PALACE Girl is sweeping as the soldiers lead Jesus John walks up to girl at the gate, and brought Peter inside. John Girl Peter Soldier Peter Man Annas Caiaphas Annas Hello, is the high priest in; this is my friend. We need to see him. Aren't you also one of the disciples of that man? No, I am not! Are you denying your master? Aren't you one of his disciples? No, I am not, he said. Didn't I see you with him in the garden? Youre the one who cut off Malchus ear. Caiaphas, my favourite son in law. High priest, my father in law. How come you advised the authorities that it is better that one man should die for all the people?

It was cold, so the servants and guards had built a charcoal fire and were standing around it, warming themselves. So Peter went over and stood with them, warming himself. The High Priest Questions Jesus. Caiaphas Jesus Jesus I would like you to answer a few questions about your disciples and teaching. I have always spoken publicly to everyone; all my teaching was done in the synagogues and in the Temple, where all the people come together. I have never said anything in secret. Why, then, do you question me? Question the people who heard me. Ask them what I told them-they know what I said. How dare you talk like that to the High Priest!

The High Priest stood up and said to Jesus, Have you no answer to give to this accusation against you? But Jesus kept quiet. Again the High Priest spoke to him, In the name of the living God I now put you under oath: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus answered him, So you say. But I tell all of you: from this time on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right side of the Almighty and coming on the clouds of heaven!

Caiaphas Crowd

Blasphemy! We don't need any more witnesses! You have just heard his blasphemy! What do you think? He is guilty and must die.

Then they spit Jesus face and beat him; and slapped him. Annas Prophesy for us, Messiah! Guess who hit you!

Soldier slaps Jesus. Jesus If I have said anything wrong, tell everyone here what it was. But if I am right in what I have said, why do you hit me?

Pilate enters. Pilate Caiaphas Pilate Crowd Man Pilate Crowd Pause. Pilate Jesus Pilate Jesus Jesus; Come closer. Are you the king of the Jews? Does this question come from you or have others told you about me? Do you think I am a Jew? It was your own people and chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done? My kingdom does not belong to this world; if my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong here! So, Are you a king, then? You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me. And what is truth? Men let us go in and talk Sorry governor but we cannot go inside the palace, we have to keep themselves ritually clean, in order to be able to eat the Passover meal. So what do you accuse this man of? He is a criminal! We would not have brought him to you if he had not committed a crime. Then take him; and try him according to your own law. We are not allowed to put anyone to death.

Pilate turns to the crowd. Pilate I cannot find any reason to condemn him. But according to the custom you have, I always set free a prisoner for you during the Passover. Do you want me to set free for you the king of the Jews? No, not him! We want Barabbas!

Pilate Pilate

But Barabbas is a criminal. Soldiers take this man and have him whipped.

The soldiers take Jesus away. They put a crown of thorny branches on his head and a purple robe on him. Soldiers (Bowing) Long live the King of the Jews!

The Soldiers slap Jesus. Soldier Lets take him back to Pilate.

The soldiers stand Jesus before the crowd. Pilate emerges, hurriedly followed by Portia. Portia Pilate Portia Pilate Portia Pilate Portia Pilate Portia Pilate Portia Remember I had a dream about him. Do you expect me to tell them I wont do my job because you had a bad dream? My love. This has nothing to do with love Doesnt it? My lord, this is not right. The people want him tried then it is my duty to try him. If its right why are they hesitant to do it themselves. May be because they are afraid of him. There is no bravery in convicting an innocent man. Portia go inside. This is one time we must look away. Promise me you will not kill him.

Pilate sighs and directs Portia to the door. Pilate Caiaphas Elders Soldiers Crowd Pilate Caiaphas My people, I bring him out here to you; to let you see that I cannot find any reason to condemn him. Look! Here is the man! Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify Him! You take him, and crucify him yourself. I find no reason to condemn him. We have a law that says he ought to die, because he claims to be the Son of God.

Pilate turns to Jesus looking frightened. Pilate Jesus Pilate Annas Where do you come from? You will not speak to me? Remember, I have the authority to set you free and also to have you crucified. You have authority over me only because it was given to you by God. So the man who handed me over to you is guilty of a worse sin. See you have to let him go, set him free If you set him free, that means that you are not the Emperor's friend!

Caiaphas

And Anyone who claims to be a king is a rebel against the Emperor!

Pilate takes his staff of office and moves Jesus closer to the people. Pilate Crowd Pilate Caiaphas Crowd Pilate Here is your king! Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him! Do you want me to crucify your king? The only king we have is the Emperor! The only king we have is the Emperor! Kill him! Kill him! Crucify him! I Pontus Pilate, in my capacity as governor, by the will of you the people, condemn the man Jesus to death and hereby handed the man Jesus over to the people to be crucified. I wash my hand off his blood.

A servant brings a paper to Pilate, pilate scribbles something on the paper. Pilate Jesus of Nazareth, KING OF THE JEWS

Caiaphas grabs the paper Caiaphas Pilate Do not write; The King of the Jews, but rather, this man said, I am the King of the Jews. What I have written stays written.

Station 2 JESUS TAKES THE CROSS Soldiers bring Jesus out and place a cross on his shoulder. Soldier Soldier Soldier Is it not true that there was a time these people wanted to make this man their king and he ran away? True! just about a week ago they all came out on the street throwing their clothes for him to ride through and singing and shouting: Hossana in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord. So all these people are hypocrites. I here he said not all who call Him lord will enter his kingdom. Which kingdom Ask them I remember the first day I heard his words spoken with authority. There and then I knew the love of God for me. Who would have thought we would betray him like this. Is he not Jesus of Nazareth who went about doing good. Why dont they give him shoes to wear, the road is rough and rocky. God has given his angels charge over us. They will not let our feet be hurt.

Jesus staggers as he walks with the cross hanging over him. Women, men, and children. Soldiers follow quietly; encourage him. Jesus falls.

Station 4 Mary Veronica Mary Martha Mary Esther Mary Veronica

JESUS MEETS MARY HIS MOTHER I cry out with my whole heart, hear me, O lord. I know you told me that the sword will pierce my heart. It is well! Please stop! Let me clean his face. Mary it is well. Take it easy. That is my son; the fruit of my womb. How can I take it easy. True; but hold yourself together. You have to be strong. Let me help-let me help him. let somebody help him now.

Jesus stops and looks at Mary. Soldiers flog Jesus. Soldier Soldier Veronica Mary Veronica Move my friend. You are going to die even if all the women weep for you. Mother, take heart. I am the hand maid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to his will. Take care of her.

Veronica leaves Mary to the other women.

SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS CARRY THE CROSS I think the women were right; this man might faint or die here. We have to get him help. But who? We will just have to force some one. Thats not right. They said his blood should be upon them; let them carry their cross. Hey you.

Crowd shifts leaving Simon with the soldier Soldier Simon Soldier Simon Soldier Simon Help your brother with his cross. But I dont know him. Must you know someone to help him? Whats your name? Simon! From where? Cyrene!

Soldier Simon of Cyrene , Carry the cross! Simon But that would make me a criminal! Soldiers You want to tell me youve not committed before. Look at them hypocrites! Soldier My friend carry the cross! Mary My son please help him. Women Sir, please help him. Simon turns to look at Mary and then at Jesus. A soldier pushes Simon towards Jesus. Simon carries the cross with Jesus by his side. Simon Soldier Soldier It is just because of Shut up and Carry the cross. You were there when you all said his blood should be upon you.

Cyrene Simon, and the forced him to carry Jesus' cross.

STATION 6 Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. Veronica struggles through the crowd. Jesus Soldiers Move! Hurry! We dont have all day.

STATION 7 Jesus falls the second time.

Jesus falls the second time. Elder A righteous man may fall seven times but the lord will lift him up

STATION 8 The women of Jerusalem weep for Jesus. The crowd presses against the soldiers and the cross. The voice of women weeping, crying and wailing become increasingly louder. Jesus Don't cry for me, but weep for yourselves and your children. For the days are coming when people will say, how lucky are the women who never had children, who never bore babies, who never nursed them! That will be the time when people will say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Hide us! For if such things as these are done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?

STATION 9 Jesus falls the third time. The soldiers try regulating the crisscrossing crowd. Children run in front of Jesus. Soldiers Children James John Soldier Soldiers laugh. Hey children what are you doing here? He is our friend. Children this is not the time. He said let the children come unto me. Well the cross is made for one man youll have to carry your own and follow him.

Station 10 JESUS IS STRIPED OF HIS CLOTHES. Soldiers remove the cross from Jesus shoulder Soldier Soldier Soldier Soldier Soldier Soldier Who has the nails and the hammer? King of the Jews, the time has come, lie down. What do we do with his clothing? We will share. His undergarment is seamless, woven in one piece from neck to them. Instead of tearing it, lets throw dice to decide who is to have it.

The soldiers gather and throw dice.

Station 11 JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS. The soldiers put Jesus on the ground and nail him to the cross They raise the cross and put it in place. Mary, Marys Sister, Mary Clepoas, Mary Magdalene. Jesus Mother, he is your son; John, she is your mother.

John moves to and holds Mary John From now you will live in my home.

Station 12 JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in order to make the scripture come true, he said, I am thirsty.

A bowl was there, full of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked in the wine, put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted up to his lips.30 Jesus drank the wine and said, It is finished! Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

MARY TAKES HER JESUS IN HER ARMS

Take the bodies down from the crosses. You know today is Friday it is not for right for the body to remain on the cross till the Sabbath. Pilate said you are to break the legs of the men who had been crucified.

So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with Jesus. Soldier Who are his family? Come and Take the body.

Mary, John and Others move closer. The soldiers take down the body of Jesus from the cross. They hand the body of Jesus to the disciples who place Him in Marys arms. The Women Clean the Body of Jesus. Woman Woman Woman Woman Woman Woman Mary John Look at his body. Look at the wounds Look at the blood. Look at the blood. Why, why, Why would this happen. Because He loves us. For God so loved us that he sent him to us.

But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they did not break his legs.34 One of the soldiers, however, plunged his spear into Jesus' side, and at once blood and water poured out. (35 The one who saw this happen has spoken of it, so that you also may believe.[a] What he said is true, and he knows that he speaks the truth.)36 This was done to make the scripture come true: Not one of his bones will be broken.37 And there is another scripture that says, People will look at him whom they pierced.

Station 14

JESUS IS BURIED IN THE TOMB

Pilate wrote a notice and had it put on the cross. Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews, is what he wrote.20 Many people read it, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city. The notice was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.21 The chief priests said to Pilate, Do not write The King of the Jews, but rather, This man said, I am the King of the Jews.

Pilate answered, What I have written stays written.

After the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took the robe, which was made of one piece of woven cloth without any seams in it.24 The soldiers said to one another, Let's not tear it; let's throw dice to see who will get it. This happened in order to make the scripture come true:

After this, Joseph, who was from the town of Arimathea, asked Pilate if he could take Jesus' body. (Joseph was a follower of Jesus, but in secret, because he was afraid of the Jewish authorities.) Pilate told him he could have the body, so Joseph went and took it away.39 Nicodemus, who at first had gone to see Jesus at night, went with Joseph, taking with him about one hundred pounds of spices, a mixture of myrrh and aloes.40 The two men took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices according to the Jewish custom of preparing a body for burial.41 There was a garden in the place where Jesus had been put to death, and in it there was a new tomb where no one had ever been buried.42 Since it was the day before the Sabbath and because the tomb was close by, they placed Jesus' body there.
