IHI Open School!


Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is the worlds foremost organization in healthcare quality improvement based out of Cambridge, MA. IHI Open School takes an interdisciplinary approach to quality improvement and safety in healthcare, training health professional students to become change agents of the future IHI Open School Chapter at UofT is one of over 300 IHI Open School Chapters in 38 countries around the world, and was recently featured in Chapter Spotlight on the IHI Open School Webpage

Chapter Background!
Created in 2009; in short three years the chapter has grown to over 700 members in various programs including nursing, pharmacy, medicine, engineering, allied health sciences, health policy, management, and public health. The Chapter at the University of Toronto is a wonderful example of how students and faculty are using the IHI Open School to help fulll the promises of quality and safety to patients. Student and faculty champions at UofT are helping to promote quality and safety education both in the classroom and in the eld. Our partners at UofT have also been instrumental in piloting the IHI Open School Quality Improvement Practicum which allows learners to apply quality improvement skills in real world settings. Seminars!
Monthly seminars given by current healthcare leaders highlighting:
Interprofessional Collaboration Patient Safety Public Health/Health Policy Change Management Quality and Process Improvement Human Factors

Email invitations sent out to a wide range of students, as well as IHI Open School at UofT Members 2010-2011 Seminars: 5 Seminars in total, which highlighted patient safety, human factors, communication, quality improvement and innovative solutions for Medicare 2011-2012 Seminars: Dr. Anne Matlow (Patient Safety), Dr. Irfan Dhalla (Virtual Ward), Michael Carter (Process Improvement), 3 more to be scheduled for the upcoming semester
