AMODIS PAMOS

Generator Partial Discharge Monitoring Hosted by ALSPA Care Supporting your maintenance strategy
Optimise power plant operations while remaining alert to high voltage problems caused over time in the stator winding system and along the bus bar.
AMODIS is a modular PC-based plant monitoring and diagnostics system. This system is comprised of several modules for each main power plant component and for the power plant as a whole. Each module can be installed as an independent unit or in combination with any of the others. The partial discharge (PD) monitoring system PAMOS is one of the AMODIS modules and is suitable for most generators. This modular PD acquisition and processing system concept allows continuous adaptation to state of the art monitoring technology. The PAMOS system has been designed to provide early warning alerts to power plant operators of potential insulation-related problems within the stator winding, the part of a generator under the greatest stress, long before a protection system would be triggered. With this monitoring tool, Alstom significantly increases the reliability of power plant diagnostics. It features a design incorporating over 25 years of experience in the area of measurements, analyses and inspections on generators worldwide. The PAMOS system can be adapted to most generators and does not require modification of the winding insulation for sensor installation.

Reliable condition assessment

Alstoms reliable condition assessment system utilising PD measurements is based on extensive knowledge of the power generation market, notably in the field of machine designs and material characteristics. Alstom has developed specific algorithms for automated long-term condition assessment of insulation systems. High capacitance sensors allow the frequency range below 2MHz to be analysed, which allows in-depth PD detection within the high voltage winding, as opposed to the only area close to the sensor. A local visualisation of the PD activity keeps customers informed about a machines actual condition. For an optimal condition assessment, PD measurements are best complemented with Alstoms full monitoring system packages and associated diagnostics. The data originating from a full set up will provide a clear picture of a power plants health status. For a further refined assessment supported by practical operational and maintenance (O&M) recommendations, Alstom provides an extensive knowledge base and expertise for in-depth diagnostics. Over the past 25 years, Alstom has developed a comprehensive diagnostics database that is comprised of data from a wide range of inspection reports and insulation systems, as well as O&M data. These data cover a wide variety of designs for machines installed worldwide by diverse manufacturers. The use of this extensive knowledge base and expertise leads to reliable and in-depth analyses for optimising a power plants maintenance and reinvestment plan. AMODIS One monitoring for your complete Plant

Alstoms lower frequency range measurement system enables an in depth monitoring of partial discharges within the generators entire winding system.
PAMOS Sensor
The stress on the insulation caused by the TEAM factors (temperature, electrical field, ambient conditions and mechanical force) is not limited to the first bar of coil of a complete stator winding. As the PD signals spread throughout the stator winding system, they encounter several impedance changes. The original pulse is distorted and attenuated according to its origin and frequency content. The frequency response will determine how much energy can be detected from the PD signal in the winding system. Alstom equips its PD monitoring system with sensors of the highest quality to effectively detect any insulation deterioration while providing the most reliable trend condition assessment. Alstom uses a high capacitance sensor to ensure high sensitivity not only to PD signals in bars or coils near the sensor, but also to those further inside the winding.

Generator with one sensor on each phase plus an additional one on the neutral point for PD measurement

PAMOS Satellite
Each generator being monitored is equipped with 4capacitive sensors to collect and transmit analogue signals to the PAMOS satellite, which digitalises the collected information and transmits it to the AMODIS platform. The satellite detects PD activity in up to three phases and the neutral point. Alstom has developed the PD monitoring system to allow a single computer to collect PD data from several PAMOS satellites connected. A refined condition assessment is conducted using a phase-resolved pattern, which provides the PD phenomena information in the required detail. The user can easily select different patterns for analysing distinct PAMOS sensor signals using the AMODIS platform. The system features a user-friendly display of the number of discharges and their amplitude at a specific voltage phase angle, with color-coding to make counting discharges convenient. The PAMOS software is designed to provide the most reliable condition assessment trends. It collects the necessary load condition information from each PD interpretation either directly from the plant control system, or as analogue signals from the Distributed Control System (DCS).

Existing monitoring approaches

Periodic PD monitoring
This configuration involves installing and connecting PAMOS sensors with the measuring cables extending to the connection box, and linking them to a PAMOS satellite. The satellite is, in turn, linked up with an AMODIS laptop, which can be taken from generator to generator for periodic on-line measurements.

Permanent PD monitoring
This configuration involves installing and connecting PAMOS sensors with the measuring cables extending to the connection box, and linking them to a PAMOS satellite. The satellite is, in turn, linked up with an AMODIS server integrated in the power plants control room. The AMODS server allows the operator to visualise and store the measurements from several installed PAMOS satellites and other AMODIS monitoring modules within a plant. Additional operational data from the DCS is captured by AMODIS server for current and historical analyses. These analysis results can be compared to reference benchmarks to detect increases in partial discharge activity.

Modular concept of PD acquisition and processing system allows continuous adaptation to state of the art technology in PD analysis.

Remote PD monitoring
This configuration involves a monitoring method optimised by connection to an Alstom remote service centre, enabling the most reliable condition diagnostics assessment. Enjoy the comfort of entrusting an entire fleet to an experienced original equipment manufacturing Plant Integrator. This configuration allows for intelligent and optimal remote asset management for making economically rational, value-based decisions in a timely manner.
