Creating a PDF Presentation Using Adobe Photoshop CS5

Another way to package and send files to a client or friend is via a PDF presentation, in which images play sequentially onscreen. To view a slideshow, all the viewer has to do is double-click the PDF file.

To create a PDF presentation


1. In Bridge, put all the files you want to display in the presentation in the same folder, in the order in which you want them to appear (they can be grouped in a stack). Display the contents of the folder, and click one of the image thumbnails. 2. Click the Output workspace (or from the Output menu on the toolbar, choose Output to Web or PDF).*A A Preview panel displays above the Content panel, and an Output panel displays on the right side (A, next page).

3. At the top of the Output panel, click PDF, then from the Template menu, choose Maximize Size.

4. In the Document category, do the following: From the Page Preset menu, choose Web, and from the Size menu, choose 800 600 or 1024 728. Choose Quality settings. For Web or other onscreen output, choose 150 ppi or 72 ppi and set the Quality to 6070. These settings affect the file size and the speed of transmission. From the Background menu, choose a color to be displayed behind the images. Optional: Check Open Password and enter a password. Your viewers will need to enter this password in order to open the PDF file. Optional: Check Permission Password and enter a password to restrict how the PDF file can be used (such as a restriction to print access). Your viewers will need to enter this password in order to print or edit the PDF file.
5. In the Layout category, uncheck all the options, including Rotate for Best Fit, to prevent any images from being rotated. 6. In the Overlays category, check Filename and Extension to have that data appear below each image, choose a Font and Size, and set the Color to White (or if you prefer to choose a custom color, click the swatch and use the color picker). 7. Optional: To display a header above all the images, in the Header category, check Add Header, choose an alignment option, enter text, and choose text attributes. Ditto for a Footer.

8. Under Playback, choose options for Acrobat: To display the presentation images at full-screen size, check Open in Full Screen Mode. To have the frames advance automatically, check Automatic Advance to the Next Page, then enter the Duration (Seconds) you want each frame to display. To have the slide show loop continuously (after the last frame displays, the show replays from the first frame), check Loop After Last Page. To display a transition effect between frames, such as a Dissolve or a Fade, choose from the Transition menu. Also choose a Direction option (not available for all the Transition options) and a Speed option.
9. Optional: In the Watermark category, check Add Watermark, enter text to be displayed in the center of each image, choose Font, Size (try 6070 pt), Color, and Offset options, and a low Opacity. 10. Select all the thumbnails to be included in the presentation, then click Refresh Preview to generate a preview of the first frame, based on the settings you have chosen. 11. Check View PDF After Save at the bottom of the dialog to have the presentation play automatically when you click Save. 12. Click Save. In the Save As dialog, enter a file name, choose a location, then click Save. A PDF file will be created, and Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Acrobat Pro, or Adobe Reader will launch. If an alert pertaining to Acrobat appears, click Yes. The PDF file will open onscreen, and then finally the slide show will start (BC, next page). To stop the show at any time, press Esc.

How'd They Do That? PDF Slide Show In just a few minutes you can create a PDF slide show with Acrobat. August/September 2005 (If you already have a multiple-page PDF document, then you can skip to step 4.) 1. Choose the documents you want to display, and convert them to PDFs or other file formats Acrobat can import (BMP, GIF, JPEG, PCX, PICT, PNG, and TIFF). Open the first PDF file in Acrobat. Select Insert Pages from the Document menu. 2. In the resulting Select File to Insert dialog box, choose the next graphic file, and click Select. In the resulting Insert Pages dialog box, choose the location of the new page to be inserted, and click OK.

3. Repeat the above steps until all the pages are in one document. Choose File > Save As, and enter a name for the gallery file in the resulting dialog box. Click Save.

4. Open the multiplepage PDF document you want to display in the slide show. Choose Edit > Preferences > General. In the resulting Preferences dialog box, check Advance every x seconds under Full Screen Navigation, and type in a value. You can also select how to advance the slides and what happens when the presentation ends. Under Full Screen Appearance, choose a transition style from the Default transition menu. Specify how you want the mouse cursor to appear from that menu. Select a Background color and click OK.

5. Choose File > Document Properties > Open Options. Under Window Options in the resulting dialog box, check Open in Full Screen Mode, and click OK. Save and close the document. The next time you open the file, it will automatically go to full-screen slideshow mode. Show off your portfolio with this well thought-out planyou will look polished, professional, and tech-savvy. If you havent heard of PDF Portfolios yet, watch a recorded demo or read about the basic plumbing at Acrobat 9 Portfolios on Spartacus of Acrobat then come back here. By default, PDF Portfolios created in Acrobat 9 will open in earlier versions of Acrobat and Reader and the PDF Portfolio will make the best use of the features available to it. When opened in version 8, the PDF Portfolio will act like a PDF Package and in version 7 and 6, the contents will appear as attachments. Since the portfolio layout is actually a SWF file and only Acrobat 9 can play it, earlier versions will display a Cover Sheet. The Cover Sheet was introduced in Acrobat 8 as part of the PDF Package concept and by default is a single page PDF that is used as a wrapper around a bunch of other content. However, in Acrobat 8, the cover sheet could also be a PDF of your own choosing with links and other navigational aides that you specify during the package creation process. This functionality has been replaced by the PDF Portfolio layout concept in 9 and now you do not have the option of setting your own cover sheet during the assembly process. The new default cover sheet looks like the one below.Its not bad but you might want a more personalized experience for users that dont have the latest version. To customize the cover sheet, follow the instructions under the graphic.

Create a PDF file with all of the information you want to convey to users of earlier versions of Acrobat Open the PDF Portfolio that you want to customize Select View|Portfolio|Cover Sheet from the menu. You should see the same thing as above. Select Document|Replace Pages and select the PDF that you just created and follow the rest of the dialog prompts. 5. Save the file. Now users of Acrobat or Reader version 9 will see the animated portfolio layout and users of earlier versions will see your custom cover sheet.

Replace the file called coversheet.pdf in your version of this directory C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\DocSettings\CombineFiles\ENU and that will be the new default.
