Course Synopsis

The course will provide coverage of the following topics: the study of life processes in plants and animals with emphasis on gaseous exchange, transport and circulation, hormones/chemical coordination, nervous system, locomotion, homeostasis, taxonomy, reproduction, development, immunology, ecosystem, quantitative ecology and biotechnology. The course will also serve to instill the Islamic approach towards the relationship between man, his environment and his role as vicegerent as ordained by his Creator. The accompanying laboratory sessions will provide hands-on experience and illustration of the theories learnt. The objectives of this course are to: 1. 2. develop an understanding of biological facts and principles with an appreciation of their significance. expose the biological systems as a manifestation of divine wisdom with a purpose in creation, as opposed to the unifying approach of blind forces of nature in the epistemology of evolution. encourage respect for all forms of life provide a suitable foundation for the study of Biology or related courses in further higher education, and for professional courses which require students to have knowledge of Biology when admitted.

Course Objectives

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1.acquire the knowledge and understanding on the biological concepts and theories at higher level. 2.know and apply the use of biological facts and principles in daily life experiences. 3.analyze, evaluate and interpret biological information and ideas theoretically and experimentally. 4.develop proper Islamic attitudes and values relating to social, technological and environmental issues relating to current biology and technology. 5.deal with biological information and ideas logically and critically. 6.handle and use the biological materials according to ethical, proper and safe procedures. 7.solve the biology-related issues and problems in a creative and critical manners.
