Remember when movie soundtracks meant something? Dante Ceccon takes a look at this dying trend in modern cinema.
Every movie needs a good soundtrack. A song that captures the moment, a number that makes you boogie in your seats or leaves you crying in your already salty popcorn. Admittedly, mine is usually Footloose. Those very first few guitar strums embarrassingly get my arms waving and my feet kicking. Then it takes over. Im not quite sure what it is but suddenly Im Kevin Bacon on a table quickly being escorted away from the premises. Ive just got to cut loose! More recently though Ive realised not everyone shares my enthusiasm. Volunteering her thoughts on Titanics 1997 heart wrenching anthem, Kate Winslet told MTV that the theme made her feel like throwing up. I just have to sit there, you know, kind of straight-faced with a massive eye roll, said Winslet. Perhaps this is where Kate and I differ. You see, the time when a soundtrack was just as important as the actors, the location or the writing seems to have vanished like the career of Nicholas Cage. Remember the moment Baby and Johnny took centre stage in Dirty Dancing? When this song plays, nobody can put Dante in the corner.

Now Ive had the time of my life -Vestron Pictures What about Coyote Ugly on the bar? Saturday Night Fever on the dance floor? Im looking for Mrs. Doubtfire vacuuming to Dude Looks Like a Lady. Or think Tarantinos Reservoir Dogs and the ear tingling Stuck in the Middle with You. More often than not we remember these songs for the moments in the film rather than the original release. So where have they gone? Surprisingly, the songs are still there. You just cant see them or more appropriately hear them. They are hidden, banished to the end credits, peeping out only to aid the names of Kenny the gaffer and Barbara the caterer while you

leave the cinema finding bits of popcorn in places you couldnt think imaginable. Released last month, The Hunger Games soundtrack has been as high as fourteen on the ARIA charts and is littered with music from Arcade Fire, Maroon 5, Kid Cudi, and Taylor Swift. Little makes it to the big screen. With most being used for promotional purposes, the soundtrack feels removed from the movie itself. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Arcade Fires Win Butler said the band took inspiration from past end credit tracks. I tried to put myself in the headspace of how excited Id be if this film was coming out when I was 15. I still remember hearing Radioheads Exit Music (for a Film) in Romeo + Juliet when I was that age, Butler said. When looking at promotional soundtracks done well, you cant go past Linkin Parks New Divide. The Transformers 2 theme masterfully fits in the first few bars between building explosion and Megan Fox pout (certainly not an easy feat). Making the successful transition from pop song to musical score. Or vice versa. Annoying, not heart warming. Others have got it right, Bridesmaids marries Hold On by Wilson Phillips hilariously while its hard to forget Afternoon Delight by Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 News Team.

Often overlooked, the Blue Tile is a Melbourne lounge complete with live music and cheap drinks. Renee Tibbs reviews the Smith Street establishment, complete with tips on buying rounds.

Skyrockets in flight -Dreamworks SKG Thanks to the kids at Glee, the television drama equivalent of a karaoke machine, soundtrack moments have been given a revival. But the glory days of the big time soundtracks that made music and movie inseparable are behind us. So Im off with a box of tissues to see Titanic 3D and remember that my heart will always go on for the movie soundtrack.

ABOUT UPSTART
What is journalism? Is it endangered? And what does it really take to embark on a media career at a time of unprecedented change? With so much murk muddying the modern media maelstrom, upstart has been created with five main aims. The first is to involve industry in improving illumination of involuntary alliteration. The second is to provide a platform for wannabe media mavens to develop their skills. Whatever uncertainties prevail, never before has there been a greater need for graduates to be able to point to published work when seeking employment. upstarts related ambition is to develop a resource for emerging journalists by showcasing a broad range of contemporary media practice, and offering advice, however impractical, about where to go when you really need help (OK, so were not the first bar guide on the web). The fifth aim is to do all that we can to improve journalists numeracy skills. We welcome contributions from students and emerging journalists wherever they may be. You can find our contributor guidelines here.
