CHAPTER 5 SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Summary of Findings Based on the data from existing researches related to our

study, Sardinella Longiceps scales are a feasible alternative to synthetic components. Sardines (Sardinella Longiceps) scales were used as the subject of this study in relation to the fact it has as being the staple fish in the Philippines. In addition to this fact, sardines are a much closer relative to herring fishes, known to have been one of the main sources of guanine, belonging in the same family Clupeidae. The research states that guanine extracted from sardine scales can be used as an additive ingredient to various products and provides a pearly and shimmering effect. This ingredient can be used instead of mica and silica, synthetic materials used by many companies, as a natural alternative. The main purpose of the survey questionnaire was to find out the current status of lipstick consumers and to conclude if the consumer base would be willing to use lipsticks that have fish scales as a component. Based on the overall results, the findings were:

1. Most respondents who used lipsticks were of ages 15 25 years-old. They accounted for 86% of the total population or 172 out of the 200 total respondents. Most of the respondents in the 15 - 25 years-old age group are composed of women in the 18 21 age bracket, 43% or 86 of the respondents out of 172 composes the survey population. On the other hand, the age brackets of 46 50 years-old, 56 60 yearsold, and 61 65 years-old, have the least respondents, each accounted for only 1% of the whole survey population. The findings show that the women from younger generations significantly use lipstick more often than women who are older.

2. Majority of the respondents who avidly apply lipstick daily call for 46% of the total population which rates those who frequently apply lipstick at 27.5%. Summing up these 2 information accounts for a total of 72.5% of the total survey population. This shows that applying lipstick is one of the more common routines of women, both daily and frequently. 3. Of all the attributes of a lipstick presented in the survey, most respondents preferred their lipstick to be long lasting (164), cosmetically safe (160) and glossy (154). This shows that features are more important to the consumers in choosing their lipstick. Being cosmetically safe and glossy are also two benefits that can be derived from using lipstick with fish scales instead of mica and silica. 4. Various responses were noted from respondents regarding their particularity with their lipstick ingredients. A number of the respondents who were particular with the lipstick content reasoned out how they prefer a safety in their lipstick ingredients as well as their preference on organic cosmetic products. They also expressed their fear of lead in lipsticks. Majority of the respondents werent that particular with their lipstick content with reasons of how they only look at the colour/shade of the lipstick and if the lipstick looks good in them. Some of the no respondents never mentioned their reasons stating the wala langphrase. They also expressed their indifference on the lipstick content also stating how they have a trust on their preferred brand. This data shows that most of the respondents cite other reasons for choosing their lipstick such as the colour/shade, the brand and etc. 5. Not all respondent were aware of fish scales as an ingredient in making lipsticks, with only 10.5% of the respondents knowledgeable about the topic. 89.5% of the

respondents, were not aware at all of the ingredients in their lipstick, surprised that fish scales can be used as an ingredient in cosmetic products. 6. Even with the low results in Table 5, most of the respondents (43.5%) were willing to buy lipsticks with fish scales in the event it was sold to them. A large percentage of the respondents are in the grey area, with 33.5% of the population answering with a MAYBE. 23% of the respondents answered a firm NO on the question, the idea of fish scales in lipsticks being so foreign to them.
