MAKING USE OF THE BUCHHOLZ RELAY Switch the transformer off and take a gas. - Gas incombustible, acetylene test negative : gasses are air rests, transformer can be switched on again. Air invades the transformer: look for the defect. - Gas combustible, acetylene test positive : trans- former shows signs of an electrical defect which should be tracked down immediately. - No gas escapes, air is sucked in by open screw, oil level drops: oil level too low, add oil, fix any leakages. 4 Buchholz Relay 5 05 Security and Control Thermal image 1. CHARACTERISTICS 3.1. MECHANICAL -For outdoor installation, IP 55, tropical design. - Thermometer casing : sheetsteel, galvanised. - Painting RAL 7033. -Capillary line, length 6 m, with PVC mantle. - Cableglands : 4 x PG 16- brass . - Compensated up to an ambient temperature of - 40Ctill +80C. - Max. humidity: 80 %. -Max. height: 2000 m. - Mounted with vibration damper. - Earthquake resistant till 2 g. 3.2. ELECTRICAL -Test voltage: 2,5 kV/1 min. - Capillary electrically insulated. - Secondary current transformer 5 A - Screw for earth connection in the apparatus. 4. OPERATION Measures the winding temperature by means of simulation. The volumetrical expansion of the capillary liquid drives the measuring unit. The sensor is heated by the oil and a resistance fed by a current transformer (mounted under oil). Temperature difference between winding and oil is simulated by current adiustment bV means of the heating resistance. Independent of the external feeding. 05 Security and Control 5. DESCRIPTION 5.1. OPERATION Underpressure develops when oil temperature in the transformer drops. Moist outside air is sucked in via the oil lock and passes through the drying medium. Air reached the transformer dry. Overpressure develops when the oil expands. This process forces the air from the conservator via the air dryer. 4. FABRICATION Composed of a cylindrical glass holder filled with a drying medium and locked up at the bottom by means of an oil lock. A sieve at the lower edge of the holder prevents contact between oil in the oil lock and drying medium. The drying medium: Is called "blue-gel". It is of glassy nature, almost chemically neutral and has got a great absorptive capacity. It is a silicagel that, drenched in cobalt salt, has got an azure crystalline appearance in dry condition. In this condition it absorbs 40% of its own weight in water. When humidity increases, the blue color changes to red. When the fill is completely re-colored it should be renewed. AVOID CONTACT BElWEEN OIL AND DRYING MEDIUM, OTHERWISE THE BLUE COLOR CHANGES TO BROWN OR BLACK WHEN DRY- ING THE MEDIUM. THIS MAKES CONTROL IM- POSSIBLE. 05 Security and Control 5.MOUNTING The DIN air dryers and "MAIER" are mounted to the tube lining by means of flanges. The HH type is mounted with a wire connection 0 1"G. 6. RENEWING THE FILL This must be accomplished quickly. Transport is done in dry and airtight packing. DIN 42562: Loosening nut (26) unlocks the oil lock. EH 5/6/7: Loosen nuts (22) to free silicagel holder (5). DIN 42567: Remove oil lock (4) by loosening guard (5). Loosen nut (12) in order to free holder (7). The numbers refer to the drawings in the appen dix. - The upper cover is constructed in such a way that emptying (respectively filling) the holder is now possible. "MAIER": -Unscrew CAP on lower part (item 1) for empty ing. - Unscrew CAP on upper part (item 2) for filling. Important note: After filling with new and dry silicagel it is required the check the oil level in the oil lock on the bottom of the air dryer also. Each type of silicagel dryer is provided with marks, indicating the proper oil level during operation. 7. REACTIVATING OR RETRIEVING OF "BLUE- GEL' This occurs at temperatures between 12 C and 200 C. Any pure gas can be used to heat the sili- cagel. Pure smoke gas from a gassy fuel or hot air under a pressure of 100-200 WC also give satis- faction. It is also possible to heat the blue-gel in a melting- pot by means of one fuel or another. This process can be accelerated by stirring the gel. Drying comes to an end when blue-gel has regained its original blue color 10 loft ...
