Heavy rainfall increases mosquito population
By NICK COHEN/The Tabernacle Sun
Indian Mills Lake and other areas of standing water, such as puddles and ponds are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The county
recommends dumping water out of lids and other items that can collect water, drilling holes into the bottom of trash cans and purchasing
fish for garden ponds to fight the population of mosquitoes.
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
June was a record-setting
month for rain, drenching the
area and creating a breeding en-
vironment for mosquitoes.
According to Erin Nooney, su-
perintendent of the mosquito
commission in Burlington Coun-
ty, the season for West Nile Virus
started off slower than normal
than previous years.
It doesnt mean its going to be
a good or bad season. Its hard to
predict it. People need to be
aware of it, Nooney said.
The county has already begun
spraying in an attempt to curb
the adult population of mosqui-
toes. Specifically, the commission
is trying to prevent people from
catching mosquito-borne dis-
eases such as West Nile Virus
and Eastern equine encephalitis.
The Mosquito Control Divi-
sion of Burlington County has
been hard at work monitoring
and treating areas of mosquito
activity, but it is important that
each of us do our part to prevent
the spread of disease, Freehold-
er Director Joe Donnelly said in a
county release.
According to the county, in
2012, there were a total of eight
West Nile Virus positive birds
found in the county.
Additionally, three birds were

County suggests taking
precautions to curb
mosquito population
confirmed positive for Eastern
equine encephalitis.
For the mosquitoes that do
test positive for West Nile Virus
and Eastern equine encephalitis,
were doing constant testing, and
when we find it, we spray and
knock out the adult population,
Nooney said.
The county suggests taking
precautions to help curb a popu-
lation increase including the dis-
posal of water-holding contain-
ers such as ceramic pots, used
tires and tire swings; drilling
holes in bottoms of recycling con-
tainers; cleaning clogged roof
gutters; turning over plastic wad-
ing pools and wheelbarrows;
changing the water in bird baths
on a weekly basis; cleaning and
chlorinate swimming pools that
are not being used, including pool
covers; and using landscaping to
eliminate standing water on your
property. Additionally, the county
suggests a number of safeguards
for when residents decide to go
outdoors.
According to the release, mini-
mizing time spent outdoors
around dusk and dawn when
mosquitoes are most active will
help minimize bites and the like-
lihood of contracting West Nile
Virus; being sure door and win-
dow screens are tight fitting and

The 2013 municipal budget was
adopted at the township commit-
tee meeting on July 10.
The budget passed unanimous-
ly with Mayor Jon Shevelew, com-
mitteeman Tim Gimbel and com-
mitteeman Ken Long all voting
yes. Committee members Sean
Gray and Martin Mozitis were not
present.
This years budget will result in
an approximate $44 increase in
taxes for the average homeowner.
In other news:
Terms of the townships set-
tlement with Public Service Elec-
tric and Gas were released. The
settlement includes $20,000 to re-
plenish the landscaping that was
removed.
Also an agreement that a re-
peat of the topping PSE&G com-
pleted would not be done again
and in the future be much less se-
vere. A landscaper will be consult-
ed in planning what will be done
to repair the area of Packinah
Trail. A check from PSE&G is ex-
pected in the next four to six
weeks.
The process to receive a
$250,000 Burlington County parks
grant is continuing to move for-
ward. The township hopes to use
the money for a number of proj-
ects, including a field house at
Stony Creek, tennis courts, a bicy-
cle trail and new light fixtures at
the soccer complex.
The township received a
$205,000 NJDOT grant for the re-
pair and resurfacing of Old Indi-
an Mills Road. Initial bids for the
project came in at just more than
$59,000, so the remainder of the
grant would be used for other
road projects that are still to be de-
termined.
The committee authorized the
sale of a 50-foot-wide, township-
owned, right of way lot along
Manitoba Trail to the residents
who own the neighboring proper-
ties. Barring any issues with pay-
ment, the lot will be split between
the two parties that live on either
side.
At the general election on Nov.
5, residents will have the opportu-
nity to vote on the proposition to
continue the annual levy for the
townships open space. Currently,
Shamong has a dedicated open
space tax of $.02 per $100 of as-
sessed property value.
The township first enacted the
open space tax in 2005 and used
the money to preserve and main-
tain land in Shamong.
Shamong will continue its
shared service agreement with
Southampton Township for the
municipal court.
Because the township does not
hold workshop meetings in July
or August, the next committee
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
Aug. 6.

ts easy to forget that youth sports
are about having fun, staying ac-
tive and building character in
kids. With all the emphasis society
puts on winning whether it be on the
sports field, in the classroom, at work
or in social situations the goals of
youth sports often get lost in the shuf-
fle, hiding behind that key word:
Win!
Even more so in recent years, it
seems, high school sports have some-
how drifted away from the youth
label and become a highly competitive
training ground for future profession-
al athletes. This emphasis on succeed-
ing on the scoreboard is purely nega-
tive when it is the only focus, when its
a win-at-all-costs mentality, and
when it crosses the line.
A few weeks ago, The New Jersey
Interscholastic Athletic Association
the non-profit organization that over-
sees 425 accredited public, private and
parochial high schools in the state rep-
resenting high school athletics
passed new rules aimed at curbing
trash talking that attacks others based
on race, ethnicity and sexual orienta-
tion. Its a new rule that piggybacks on
the states recently-enacted anti-bully-
ing law.
Steve Goodell, an attorney for the
NJSIAA, said: Trash talking, were
not banning that. Were saying that
race-baiting, attacking ones race or
ethnicity, thats out of bounds.
And Steven Timko, the executive di-
rector of the NJSIAA, said: Obscene
gestures, profanity or unduly provoca-
tive language or action toward offi-
cials, opponents or spectators wont be
tolerated in the classroom or the field
of play.
Sounds simple and straightforward
enough: Being unsportsmanlike wont
be tolerated. But the announcement of
the rules received some backlash from
people asking when the policing, when
the Big Brother mentality, will finally
end. To that, we say, are you kid-
ding?
Its beyond us how anyone could
argue that promoting sportsmanship,
at any level youth, amateur or even
professional would be a bad thing. If
the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, NCAA or
MLS passed an official rule like this,
the move would, and should, be ap-
plauded, not criticized. So lets get
real. Lets focus on whats important
here building character in our kids.
Take that trash talking elsewhere
Ban on some youth sports trash talking is a good idea
Your thoughts
What do you think about the NJSIAAs
new rule, and about sportsmanship in
youth sports nowadays? Let your voice
be heard through a letter to the editor.

Residents should
use mosquito

shoes, socks, long pants and a

for long periods of time.
When mosquitoes are most ac-

woven materials that keep mos-

dition to using mosquito netting
when sleeping outdoors or in an
unscreened structure and to pro-

Residents should also consider
the use of mosquito repellent, ac-

necessary to be outdoors.
