Library offers programs to children throughout summer
By KRISTINA SCALA/The Moorestown Sun
Jackson, 5, and Hudson Cogan, 3, dig through a box of Legos during Lego League at the Moorestown Library on Monday, July 8. Lego League
is held every Monday at 1:30 p.m. until Aug. 12.
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Keeping children involved in
summertime activities might be
easier than getting them to pick
up a book or even go to the library.
The Moorestown Library offers
programs during the summer
that keep children involved in ed-
ucational activities while making
sure they are having fun.
According to Jen Dunne, prin-
cipal librarian for childrens serv-
ices, the library offers many pro-
grams throughout the year. Dur-
ing the summer, preschool story
times are expanded to four times a
week, and there are drop-in story
times and activities so registra-
tion is not an issue. Movies are
also shown in the library on Tues-
day afternoons.
We try to be more flexible in
the summer to account for the
various schedules people have,
she said.
The library also has a summer
reading program for children in
second to sixth grade and teens in
seventh grade and up.
Dunne said there are more than
100 students signed up for the pro-
gram and most participate in the
various summer reading activi-
ties. The program is constructed
differently than the schools read-
ing program, but both focus on
getting students to read, she said.
Instead of assigned summer

reading, students select a book to
read for the librarys program
and are given prizes at the end of
the summer. Children who read
between five to nine books will
receive a prize from the grab box,
while those who read 10 or more
get a Barnes & Noble gift card.
Children receive more points if
they read longer books. The more
points, the better the prize.
Teens must fill out a short
book review and submit it to re-
ceive a raffle ticket.
Teens fill out the ticket select-
ing which prize they would like
to win and drop it in the raffle
box.
The more books they read, the
better the chance of winning a
prize.
The primary goal is to keep
up their reading skills, Dunne
said. For them, I dont think
they see it as school related. I
think for them it is just fun.
Summer readers are also given
a chance to report on their book,
describing what was read. Chil-
dren can report on three books
per day until Saturday, Aug. 17.
Teen volunteers are staffed
daily at the library waiting for
the arrival of a young reader.
As for other programs, Dunne
said the activities are supposed to
encourage students to visit the li-
brary during the summer.
Merchantville resident Joanne
Leibrand brought her son, Keith,
to a Lego League program on
Monday, July 8. She said this is
the first time she has taken her
son to the Moorestown Library.
There are a lot more activities
in Moorestown, she said, adding
she was looking for childrens ac-
tivities for the summer and found
out Lego League did not require
registration.
Leibrand thinks library sum-
mer activities are a great way to

said she would bring her son

Dunne said even the summer
reading program is a great way
to keep students minds active
when on vacation.
I think that its very impor-
tant to include reading in their
lives all year round. Especially in

side, Dunne said.

I
ts easy to forget that youth sports
are about having fun, staying ac-
tive and building character in
kids. With all the emphasis society
puts on winning whether it be on the
sports field, in the classroom, at work
or in social situations the goals of
youth sports often get lost in the shuf-
fle, hiding behind that key word:
Win!
Even more so in recent years, it
seems, high school sports have some-
how drifted away from the youth
label and become a highly competitive
training ground for future profession-
al athletes. This emphasis on succeed-
ing on the scoreboard is purely nega-
tive when it is the only focus, when its
a win-at-all-costs mentality, and
when it crosses the line.
A few weeks ago, The New Jersey
Interscholastic Athletic Association
the non-profit organization that over-
sees 425 accredited public, private and
parochial high schools in the state rep-
resenting high school athletics
passed new rules aimed at curbing
trash talking that attacks others based
on race, ethnicity and sexual orienta-
tion. Its a new rule that piggybacks on
the states recently-enacted anti-bully-
ing law.
Steve Goodell, an attorney for the
NJSIAA, said: Trash talking, were
not banning that. Were saying that
race-baiting, attacking ones race or
ethnicity, thats out of bounds.
And Steven Timko, the executive di-
rector of the NJSIAA, said: Obscene
gestures, profanity or unduly provoca-
tive language or action toward offi-
cials, opponents or spectators wont be
tolerated in the classroom or the field
of play.
Sounds simple and straightforward
enough: Being unsportsmanlike wont
be tolerated. But the announcement of
the rules received some backlash from
people asking when the policing, when
the Big Brother mentality, will end.
To that, we say, are you kidding?
Its beyond us how anyone could
argue that promoting sportsmanship,
at any level youth, amateur or even
professional would be a bad thing. If
the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, NCAA or
MLS passed an official rule like this,
the move would, and should, be ap-
plauded, not criticized. So lets get
real. Lets get back to focusing on
whats important here building char-
acter in our kids.
Take that trash talking elsewhere
Ban on some youth sports trash talking is a good idea
Your thoughts
What do you think about the NJSIAAs
new rule, and about sportsmanship in
youth sports nowadays? Let your voice
be heard through a letter to the editor.
Sheriffs department receives funds for pedestrian safety
The New Jersey Division of Highway
Traffic Safety has awarded the Burlington
County Sheriff s Department $70,000 to con-
duct pedestrian safety enforcement opera-
tions throughout the county.
We will be working with local police de-
partments to target areas where both pedes-
trians and drivers are not following the
law, Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stan-
field said. Sheriff s officers and municipal
police officers will work together to con-
duct 30 operations between July 1 and June
30, 2014. In 2012, Burlington County had 11
pedestrian deaths, after averaging 5.6
pedestrian deaths for the prior three years.
Many of the pedestrian deaths occur along
the 23 miles of Route 130 that runs through
the county. In 2012, six pedestrians died
along this portion of the highway, with
three pedestrian fatalities in Delran Town-
ship and one each in Willingboro, Florence
and Burlington City. So far during 2013
there has been one fatal crash on Route 130.
The Pedestrian Enforcement Grant will
involve officers acting undercover as de-
coys using the crosswalks. Violators will be
issued warnings and tickets as part of this
project to draw awareness to pedestrian
laws. The Sheriff s Department is also ad-
ministering another grant, dubbed Opera-
tion 130 Safe Passage, for traffic enforce-
ment specifically along the Route 130 corri-
dor. For the fifth year in a row, the portion
of the Route 130 corridor that passes
through Burlington County has been desig-
nated as the most dangerous roadway in
the state for pedestrians by the Tri-State
Transportation Campaign.
In addition to the Route 130 corridor, we
are concerned about pedestrian crashes all
throughout our county. Between 2007 and
2011 we had a total of 637 pedestrian crash-
es with 555 pedestrian injuries and 39 fatali-
ties, Stanfield said.
Between 2009 and the first quarter of
2013, many communities have already had
20 or more pedestrian involved crashes. So
far in 2013 there have been four crashes in
Burlington County involving pedestrians,
two of them fatal.
A fine of $200 can be imposed for failure
to yield to pedestrians and the driver can
also be sentenced to community service. In
the event a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle
and seriously injured, fines can be in-
creased up to $500 and the driver can be sen-
tenced to up to 25 days in jail.

I rarely write to express my experience regarding contractor work performance,
but in this case I feel compelled to make an exception. You need to know that the
work James and Earl did for Nancy and I was top notch! James worked
methodically, professionally and seemingly in the background, without interfering
with the daily household goings on. If he had any questions or needed clarification
on a detail, he was always pleasant and polite. Jim, Ocean City
Just wanted to pass along my thanks for the great work Earl and James did on
the remodel! They could not have been easier to work with, and having people
you trust in your home is such a good feeling. Rick, Cherry Hill

Heavy rainfall creates breeding
environment for mosquitoes
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Moorestown Sun
June was a record-setting
month for rain, drenching the
area and creating a breeding en-
vironment for mosquitoes.
According to Erin Nooney, su-
perintendent of the mosquito
commission in Burlington Coun-
ty, the season for West Nile Virus
started off slower than normal
than previous years.
It doesnt mean its going to be
a good or bad season. Its hard to
predict it. People need to be
aware of it, Nooney said.
The county has already begun
spraying in an attempt to curb
the adult population of mosqui-
toes. Specifically, the commission
is trying to prevent people from
catching mosquito-borne dis-
eases such as West Nile Virus
and Eastern equine encephalitis.
The Mosquito Control Divi-
sion of Burlington County has
been hard at work monitoring
and treating areas of mosquito
activity, but it is important that
each of us do our part to prevent
the spread of disease, Freehold-
er Director Joe Donnelly said in a
county release.
According to the county, in
2012, there were a total of eight
West Nile Virus positive birds
found in the county.
Additionally, three birds were
confirmed positive for Eastern
equine encephalitis.
For the mosquitoes that do
test positive for West Nile Virus
and Eastern equine encephalitis,
were doing constant testing, and
when we find it, we spray and
knock out the adult population,
Nooney said.
The county suggests taking
precautions to help curb a popu-
lation increase including the dis-
posal of water-holding contain-
ers such as ceramic pots, used
tires and tire swings; drilling
holes in bottoms of recycling con-
tainers; cleaning clogged roof
gutters; turning over plastic wad-
ing pools and wheelbarrows;
changing the water in bird baths

Residents urged to use mosquito
repellent when going outdoors
on a weekly basis; cleaning and
chlorinate swimming pools that
are not being used, including pool
covers; and using landscaping to
eliminate standing water on your
property. Additionally, the county
suggests a number of safeguards
for when residents decide to go
outdoors.
According to the release, mini-
mizing time spent outdoors
around dusk and dawn when
mosquitoes are most active will
help minimize bites and the like-
lihood of contracting West Nile
Virus; being sure door and win-
dow screens are tight fitting and
in good repair; and wearing
shoes, socks, long pants and a
long-sleeved shirt when outdoors
for long periods of time. When
mosquitoes are most active, resi-
dents should wear light-colored
clothing and tightly woven mate-
rials that keep mosquitoes away
from the skin, in addition to
using mosquito netting when
sleeping outdoors or in an un-
screened structure and to protect
small babies when outdoors.
Residents should also consider
the use of mosquito repellent, ac-
cording to directions, when it is
necessary to be outdoors.
Citronella helps a little but I
dont fully recommend it,
Nooney said. Deet also is very ef-
fective. For those people who have
a back porch, a fan works great,
too. Mosquitoes arent the best
fliers so a fan helps to keep them
away.
To help the county and report
standing water or to report a dead
bird, visit the how do I section
of the Burlington County Health
Department Homepage,
www.co.burlington.nj.us/health,
or call the Health Department at

Were putting stuff out there

said.

After hosting an exchange stu-
dent from Paraguay, twin sisters
from Moorestown High School
are on their way to visit her there
for an intercultural experience of
their own.
For the last six months, the
Farmer family of Moorestown
hosted AFS exchange student
Maia Rojas Morningo from Asun-
cion, Paraguays largest city.
Recently, Morningo departed
New Jersey with the other 29 in-
ternational students who had
been hosted throughout New Jer-
sey.
"Hosting an AFS exchange stu-
dent was an amazing experience.
Our family was exposed to the
culture of Paraguay, a remote
South American country that few
have visited or know much
about, said host dad, Jamie.
Having our new daughter,
Maia, stay with us broadened our
view of the world, and chal-
lenged us to try new things while
introducing Maia to America. We
love that AFS is committed to im-
proving cultural understanding
and international relationships
one family at a time.
Having an extra teen in any
home can be a challenge, but it
was worth every minute. These
kids are so brave.
It is inspiring to just meet an
exchange student, let alone host
one!"
Each year, AFS Intercultural
Programs/U.S., a leading inter-
national high school student ex-
change for more than 60 years,
welcomes 2,300 high school stu-
dents from more than 90 coun-
tries into communities through-
out the U.S.
These students are eager to at-
tend a local high school, live with
a host family and discover what
America is all about.
AFS is looking for a supportive
host family in Moorestown,
where the local high school has
experienced the enrichment of
hosting exchange students and is
open to welcoming more.
Host families provide a bed
and meals, share their daily lives
with students, and help guide and
support students as they would
their own children. Students
come with full medical insurance
and personal spending money.
Families and their hosted stu-
dents receive ongoing support
from AFS staff and experienced,
local volunteers.
Morningo's natural parents of-
fered the host twin sisters, Mad-
die and Jenny Farmer, a learning
experience of a lifetime, inviting
them to Paraguay to experience
her life there this summer.
Maia's family wanted to re-
turn our generosity by giving our
daughters a cultural experience
in their own country. They have
some wonderful activities
planned, including a trip to the
Iguazu Falls.
The twins will spend a month
in Asuncion, and then attend two
weeks of school with Maia, said
host mom, Toni.
AFS offers travel abroad pro-
grams to U.S. students for the
summer, a semester or a year,
many offering scholarships.
If you have an interest in host-
ing a student or travelling abroad
as an exchange student contact,
Sue Fershing, New Jerseys area
team chair, at (973) 533-1341.
Or you can send her an email
at sfersh@juno.com or visit
www.afsusa.org.
