Community Addiction Studies Course


100 Hours (held over a 20 week period)

Organisation of Programme: Part-time (3 hours each week + one weekend + some full day Saturdays) Aim of Programme: The purpose of the Community Addiction Studies Course is to enable people to: Learn about drugs and their effects Develop an understanding of addiction Examine their own attitudes Become more effective in their personal responses Develop the skills and knowledge to become more effective in responding to drug misuse in their own communities Student/Trainee Profile: Community members who feel they would like to be more effective when it comes to drug/alcohol issues. There are no education requirements to be part of this course, only a willingness to learn. Number of Students/Trainees: Application Procedure: Selection Procedure: Certification: 20-25 per course Application forms need to be filled out and all applicants are required to take part in an interview. Application Committee selects participants based on written applications and interviews. URRS is registered with FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council). This course is one Module at FETAC Level 5. 250.00 October 2013 7.00pm 10.00pm Introduction Drug use, misuse and abuse Drugs as participants encounter them, signs and symptoms Drugs used in participants community and their effects Attitudes Pharmaceutical information on drugs The process of addiction Families and the effects of addiction on families Interventions at a one to one level Intervention strategies Intervention and listening skills, role play Personal development weekend Referral and treatment programmes Agency visits Personal stories, drug user, parent, NA speaker, Nar-Anon Community responses to problem drug use Research presentations

1. Are you involved in any community activity? Do you work in the community? Please describe I am currently night worker in Ashleigh house coolmine womens Treatment centre.

2. How did you hear about the course? My Partner done the course 2 years ago.

3. Have you participated in any other courses which related to drugs or community development? Please describe I have done Cra training and i am currently awaiting to be certified.

4. Why would you like to do this course? I would like to do the course as i want to future my Career in drug and alcohol addicition. 5. Do you have any ideas how you would like to use what you learn? Please outline Well As i am currently working with women in recovery I would use what i learn to hopfully one day become a keyworker in the treatment centre I am currently working in.
