Filtering lube oil for efficient production processes

The Challenge

A Slovenian steel manufacturer encountered serious issues with the lubrication oil in six tanks, each storing 12.000 liters. The 100um cleanable filters did not meet the requirements in performance and quality of the manufacturer to filter out metallic particles and water content (6-7%).

The Solution

Donaldson versatile filtration technology is used in several industries hereby improving production processes and ensuring long-life equipment standards. Imex Filtertechnika Kft thoroughly investigated and analyzed the challenges ahead. An on-site seminar resulted in a tailor-made solution. Imexs engineers conducted a particle analysis with an 8-channel laser particle counter to measure the ISO cleanliness. A vacuum test showed a precise percentage of water in the tanks. The results of all tests led to the development of a filter unit for heavy duty applications in which Donaldson HRK10 is a core feature of it.

The Result

Increased oil cleanliness level was 23/23/22 (ISO 4406) at the beginning, after installation of the filter unit it reached 19/16/15. To ensure constant oil monitoring a 4-channel in-line particle counter was installed. The whole filter unit is protected by a control box which enhances user-friendliness and mobility of the monitoring system.

The HRK10 high flow filter combines the best features of its predecessor, the HEK11: ANSI inlet port options, top cover filter servicing for ease of maintenance, and a selection of service indicators. The HRK10 all-steel housing design provides a strong, durable, and dependable unit. It offers standard features like deep pleat filters for higher dirt holding capacity and standard Donaldson DT 4-layer media filter construction. This technology, combined with many other standard features, is ideal for todays applications in pulp and paper, power generation and steel mill applications. Six standard grades of media are offered. A port for an electrical indicator is incorporated into the differential indicator block. Filter Notes: All =1000 filters utilize glass fiber media with an epoxy-based resin system for the ultimate in chemical compatibility. All Donaldson HRK10 filters are potted with epoxy-based adhesives. All HRK10 filters are reserve flow (inside to outside), keeping contaminants contained during servicing.
