Commutator reverses the direction of current in the armature coil of electric motor. (B) Rewrite the Column II so as to match the Column I : Column I Column II Earthing Prevents shocks Overloading Flow of high current (C) State whether the following statements are True or False : True. False. A substance having pH value 7 will have no effect on litmus paper. Answer the following as required : (Any Two) Stretch the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the right hand so that they are perpendicular to each other. It the forefinger indicates the direction of the magnetic field and the thumb shows the direction of the motion of conductor, the middle finger will show the direction of induced current. 1. 2. 3. 4. Magnetic lines of force are closed continuous curves. They start from north pole and ends on south pole. The tangent at any point on the magnetic lines of force gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point. No two magnetic lines of force can intersect each other. Magnetic lines of force are crowded where the magnetic field is strong and far from each other where the field is weak.

The term olfactory means relating to sense of smell. Those substances whose smell changes in acidic or basic solution are called as olfactory indicators. It works on the principle that when an acid or base is added to it, its characteristic smell cannot be detected. Onion and vanilla extract are olfactory indicators. Eg. : Onion has a characteristic smell. When a basic solution like sodium hydroxide solution is added to a cloth strip treated with onions, then the onion smell cannot be detected. An acidic solution like hydrochloric acid, does not destroy the smell of onions. This is used as a test for acids and bases. Vanilla extract has a characteristic pleasant smell. If a basic solution like sodium hydroxide is added to vanilla extract, then we cannot detect the characteristic smell of vanilla. An acidic solution like hydrochloric acid, does not destroy the vanilla extract. This is used as a test for acids and bases.

Answer the following : (Any One) Working of DC generator : (a) When the coil of DC generator rotates in the magnetic field, potential difference is produced in the coil. This gives rise to the flow of current. This is shown by glowing of the bulb. (b) In D.C. generator, the flow of current in the circuit is in the same direction as long as the coil rotates in the magnetic field. (c) This is because one brush is always in contact with the arm of the armature moving up and other brush is in contact with the arm of the armature moving downward in the magnetic field. 1. 2. When a base reacts with acid, then a salt and water is formed. This is called as neutralization reaction. Eg. : (a) When hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride and water are formed. + H 2O HCl + NaOH NaCl Acid Base Salt Water Hydrochloric Sodium Sodium chloride Water acid hydroxide (b) When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water, it turns milky due to the formation of white precipitate of calcium carbonate. Ca(OH) 2(aq) + CO 2 (g) CaCO 3 (s) + H 2 O (l) Base Acid Salt Water Calcium Carbon Calcium Water hydroxide dioxide carbonate Thus this is a neutralization reaction where base reacts with acidic non-metallic oxide (CO2) to form salt and water.

Fill in the blanks : Aluminium oxide is amphoteric in nature. Pure gold is 24 karat gold. In asexual mode of reproduction, the offsprings are with minor differences. Hydra uses regenerative cells for reproduction in the process of budding. (A) Give scientific reasons : (Any One) 1. Gold is a yellow shining metal. 2. Gold metal does not corrode because it is a highly unreactive metal that remains unaffected by air, water vapour and other gases in the atmosphere. 3. Gold does not tarnish and retains its luster for years. 4. Since gold does not corrode, gold ornaments look new after years. So, it is used to make jewellery because of its bright shiny surface and high resistance to corrosion. 1. 2. 3. 4. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. A basic process in reproduction is the creation of a DNA copy. Cells use chemical reactions to create copies of their DNA. In this process of copying, some variations take place each time. Therefore, DNA copies generated during reproduction are similar but not identical to the original. In human males, two dissimilar chromosomes are present, longer X and shorter Y. In human females, two similar longer X chromosomes are present. All children inherit X chromosome from their mother. If the offspring inherits X chromosome from the father, then it will be a daughter and if it inherits Y chromosome from the father, then it will be a son. Thus in human beings the gamete from the male parents decides the sex of the baby.

The order of metals according to decreasing reactivites are : Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu. The pairs of visible contrasting characters in garden peas (Pisum sativum) are : 1. Tall/short plants 2. Red/white flowers 3. Round/wrinkled seeds 4. Axial/terminal position of flowers 5. Green/yellow coloured pods 6. Grey/white colour of the seed coat 7. Full/constricted shaped pods. Binary fission : (a) It is a method of asexual reproduction that is employed by most prokaryotes, some protozoa and some organelles within eukaryotic cells. (b) In this method, the living cell divides into two equal or nearly equal parts which have the potential to grow to the size of the original one. (c) The plane of cytoplasmic division is through any plane in amoeba (simple binary fission). (d) However, in some organisms fission occurs through a specific axis (transverse or longitudinal binary fission). Eg. : Paramoecium, Euglena.

Answer the following : (Any One) The human male reproductive system consists of : 1. Testis : Produces sperms (male germ cells). As formation of sperms require temperature lower than the normal body temperature, testes are located outside the abdominal cavity in the scrotum. Testes secrete the hormone testosterone which brings about changes in boys during puberty.

Epididymis : Immature sperms travel to the epididymis for development and storage. Vas deferens : It is a passage through which the sperm travels towards the urethra. Seminal vesicle and prostate glands : They produce the ejaculatory fluid which helps the sperm in transport and provides nutrition. Penis : It is the portion of the reproductive system that delivers the sperms to the site of fertilization. Sperms : A sperm cell is composed of a head which carries the genetic information, a middle part which carries mitochondria for energy production and a tail which is like a flagellum to help in movement towards the female germ cells. Mendel made several crosses of pea-plants involving only one pair of contrasting characters. Such crosses are termed as Monohybrid crosses. Eg. : Mendels cross of red-flowered and white flowered pea-plants. When a pure red-flowered (RR) pea plant is crossed with pure white flowered (rr) pea plant, all the plants produced in F 1 generation are red-flowered.
