Overview
R/3 offers a high degree of system flexibility in order to meet customer requirements and the system supports a number of different hardware platforms and databases. The wide range of variables that the System is capable of managing mean that R/3 installation scenarios can vary greatly. This is why careful planning by the customer and installer is prerequisite for performing the installation of an R/3 System. Pre-installation planning includes giving serious consideration to system sizing as well as to layouts such as data storage, system configuration, and network configuration. Security considerations (such as data security, availability, and access control) must also be planned. The R/3 System should be installed with the results of these decisions and plans. This section gives an overview of the installation steps and time estimates for a typical installation run. The information in this chapter can be used to coordinate the installation procedure.

The actual time required for your installation may differ for several reasons (such as your hardware configuration, the experience of your installer, and so forth).

Pre Installation
Prior to installation, the hardware and software requirements must be checked using the R/3 Installation Checklist. It might be necessary to order additional disks, download patches, or install additional software components.

Planning the R/3 Installation on Windows NT Overview

First Installation Day

During the first day, all installation phases including installing the database software should be finished successfully. The database build and load, which takes the longest period of time during installation, should be started on the first day so that it can run overnight. Installation step Getting the installation notes Checking the system (using checklists) Defining the system configuration (Central Instance, Dialog Instances etc.) Choosing an SAP System Name Choosing passwords Planning the directory distribution Creating NT users Installing the DB software Installing the Central Instance (unpacking the software, getting the customer's license key) Starting the DB Build and Load 1/2 h 1/2 h 15 min. 1/2 h 1/2-1 h 15 min. (build and load:3-10h) Time requirements

Second Installation Day

The following actions are performed during the second day: Installation step Checking the build and load log files Starting the import of the ABAP/4 loads Checking the installation logs Installing additional Dialog Instances Installing Frontends Checking and Completing the Installation Time requirements 15 min. 1h 15 min. 1/2 - 1 h 15 min. -1/2 h 1-3h

Considerations Before the Installation

There are two major considerations that must be addressed before starting the installation: SAP R/3 Configuration Distribution of the physical storage for R/3 instances

The R/3 Configuration Planning

Configuration planning decisions involve the number of R/3 instances to be installed at the site, their roles, and the hardware to be used. The planning configuration must be based on such characteristics of the system as the set of applications to be used, number of users, and so forth. The specific discussion of these issues lies beyond the scope of this manual. However there are some rules to remember: Every SAP R/3 System consists of at least one Application Server Instanceand a Database Server Instance .

Planning the R/3 Installation on Windows NT Installation CDs

There is one Application Server Instancein the SAP R/3 System which runs special SAP processes that are unique in the system. This Application Server Instanceis called the Central Instance. On this Central Instance host, the SAP R/3 software and other important files are stored. There is also exactly one Database Server (Database Instance) containing the R/3 database. A Central Instance running on the same host with the database is often referred to as a Central System. Besides these two essential instances, there may be several additional Application Server Instanceson other hosts. These Instances are called Dialog Instances. The SAP R/3 Frontend Software (SAP GUI) may be installed on the same and/or different hosts. The SAP R/3 Installation always starts with the installation of the Central Instance. After the installation of the Central Instance, the Database Instance needs to be installed. After finishing the installation of the Central Instance and the Database Instance, additional Dialog Instances may be installed.

Distribution of the Physical Storage for R/3 Instances on an Application Server

This phase in the planning involves estimating the size of R/3 components and choosing Windows NT logical drives on which to place them. This will allow us, in a later step, to configure physical disks appropriately. The SAP R/3 Directory Tree starts from the directory \usr\sap and contains global and local (instancespecific) data on a global host (where the Main Instance resides). On local hosts (with Dialog Instances) the directory \usr\sap contains only instance-specific data. The installation program will create the directory \usr\sap on the global host and share it with the names SAPMNT and SAPLOC. The same directory on the local host will be shared as SAPLOC.

Installation CDs
The package delivered for the installation of the SAP Release 3.0 on Windows NT includes the following CDs with the labels: ORACLE CD 1: CD 2: CD 3: CD 4: CD 5: SAP KERNEL PRESENTATION & UPGRADE ORACLE RDBMS DB-EXPORT 1& DB EXPORT 2 REPORT LOAD

You will find a short Installation Guide in the directory <CD-DRIVE>:\NT on the CD "SAP KERNEL." You can read the Windows Help file by double-clicking on the file R3INST.HLP.
