DRESS CODE
Parents often ask questions on the dress code, if any, for their children. The Institute encourages informal living by students and there is no specific dress code. Students are, however, expected to wear normal dress like jeans, Tshirts, and sports shoes etc. Women students normally wear Salwar Kameez with colours and designs of their choice in academic area. Shoes are compulsory in laboratories and workshops for both male and female students. There is no specific dress code in halls of residence; but students are expected to be well dressed in the common areas. Not wearing a belt and a watch may be interpreted as participation in ragging and invite disciplinary action. Therefore, you are strongly advised to wear a belt, a colourful T-shirt, shoes and watch during the first year.

RAGGING
Engineering education in India has earned a bad reputation because of the existence of ragging in some institutions. Newspaper reports have highlighted the recent judgment of the Honble Supreme Court of India making it mandatory to eliminate ragging from campuses. I am happy to tell you that NIT Rourkela is zeroragging Institute and no student should ever worry about it. To make the best even better the following steps have been taken: (a) The Institute rules mandate every fresher to report to his faculty advisor, Warden or Director in any incidence of harassment made to him/her or to another fresher. Failure to report a ragging incident shall attract severe punishment. Please never hide a ragging incident. (b) Parents are requested to share any information on possible harassment of their child or his classmates with childs faculty advisor or warden. Failure to do so means hurting the interest of your child. The institute needs your cooperation to help your child. NIT Rourkela has been able to achieve zero ragging status, only by
NITR UG Admission 2012-13 Page 3

convincing its students that ragging is incompatible with the status of a NITian. I believe, you subscribe to this view point. If you believe otherwise, NIT Rourkela is not the place for you. Note: All students and their parents are required to submit Anti Ragging Affidavits as mentioned in the Sl. No. 13 of Documents Required for Admission.

BICYCLE, MOTOR CYCLE AND COMPUTER

Considering the physical distance from the hall of residence to Institute, every student is required to have a bicycle in the hostel. You are advised to bring your own bicycle from home while coming for admission. You may also prefer to buy a new bicycle or a used one at Rourkela. Kindly note that the Institute has banned use of motor cycle, scooter, moped etc. within the campus by the students. Never think of using a motor cycle on campus as long as you are at NIT Rourkela. We want our graduates to start straight with four wheelers after their graduation. Your academic activities will involve use of computer. You may chose a desktop or a laptop, the latter being more useful and convenient. When you buy your computer please make sure that it is a high-end device with adequate RAM and hard disk that will remain useful for the next four or five years.

ATTENDANCE
Unlike many universities NIT Rourkelas academic programme is based on the teaching learning process, examination being only incidental. While examination is important, attending class and learning is more important. Never, think of skipping a class without a compelling reason. The regulations are very strict about attendance and price of skipping class can be very high.

DISCIPLINE AND SAFETY

Discipline and safety are two major planks on which the welfare of our students rests. There is no specific discipline or safety guidelines except what the children have learnt at their homes and schools. The key is to honour other students right to live with dignity and your own right to remain protected from injury. Always be sober and polite to others.

MEDICAL ISSUES
Rourkela is known for its good climate (barring April-June, much of which falls during vacation) and students normally enjoy good health. Still, for unforeseen circumstances, the Institute Dispensary is fully equipped to handle most ailments. Institute doctors also provide services from home when the dispensary is closed. Rourkela has two good hospitals with which NIT has a special relationship.

STUDENT ACTIVITY
NIT Rourkelas academic programme puts a lot of importance on corporate life. There is a rich in cultural life and significant student activity. Every student is encouraged to play at least one game and to take part in one cultural or social activity, the more being better. All students are advised to participate in the activity that you shall enjoy most. Your senior students will guide you how to join the programmes.

BANK LOANS
NIT Rourkela has arrangement with several nationalized and private banks for providing study loans to students with no requirement of security or guarantee. Students are advised to take advantage of this facility instead of suffering hardship for 4 or 5 years. Bank loans can be sanctioned right on campus during admission.
