Kirk Douglas, the famous Hollywood actor, was born in 1916. At the age of 80, he
had a stroke and suffered from speech problems. Douglas, however, didnt give
up. With the help of speech therapy, his speech has improved, and today, when he
speaks, he speaks slowly but clearly.
In spite of his health problems, Douglas wanted very much to make another film.
Eventually he was offered an ideal part in a film called Diamonds. In the film,
which is based on a true story, he stars as an old man who has had a stroke and
feels depressed and frustrated because he cant speak clearly. He complains that
people around him dont understand him.
Many of the scenes in the film reminded Douglas of experiences in his own life
after he suffered his stroke. He too felt frustrated. He even began to think that he
would never make a film again. He is very pleased with Diamonds, particularly because while it is sad, it is
also funny.
Kirk Douglas must surely serve as a model of how life can continue even after a serious illness. However,
this demands a great deal of will-power, and also, according to Douglas, a sense of humour.
1 What happened to Kirk Douglas as a result of his stroke? ..................................................................
2 What was Kirk Douglass reaction to this? ...........................................................................................
3 Why was the part in Diamonds so suitable for Douglas? ....................................................................
................................................................................................................................................................
4 What bothered the man that Douglas played in Diamonds? ...............................................................
5 Why does Douglas like this film? ...........................................................................................................
6 What does the story about Kirk Douglas tell others? ...........................................................................
