Crime rate
decreases
by 36.9%
last year
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestowns crime rate de-
creased 36.9 percent last year,
with 103 fewer offenses, accord-
ing to the states recently re-
leased Uniform Crime Reporting
statistics.
We find that crime is cyclical
in nature. One year we might be
up, and one year we might be
down, Moorestown Police Lt.
Lee Lieber said.
Burglary decreased by 71 per-
cent (38 to 11) from January to
June 2012.
Theft also decreased by 29.4
percent to 139 offenses in that
time period, according to the
states UCR report.
Lieber said last year the de-
partment cracked down on two
burglary rings, which played a
large factor in comparable num-
bers for the next year.
According to Lieber, the yearly
report is pertinent for long-term
planning. For day-to-day opera-
tions, the department has an in-

All-year outdoor
restaurant seating
coming to mall
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
All-year outdoor restaurant
seating is coming to the
Moorestown Mall.
The zoning board unanimously
approved PREITs plans for out-
door seating at Osteria by Marc
Vetri, Corner Bakery and Fire-
birds Wood Fired Grill.
According to Tom Ford, direc-
tor of community development,
outdoor seating for Panera Bread,
Al Dente, Chipotle Mexican Grill
and Elevation Burger was ap-
proved in the beginning of the
year. This is first time the zoning
board had to make a decision on
three restaurant plans at once.
Zoning officer Peter Clifford
said it was the largest application
he has seen during his 14 years in
Moorestown. The plans presented
at the July 16 meeting were de-
tailed from the table configura-
tion to the canopies and the hours
of operation. Clifford said
PREITs attorney outlined plans
for each restaurant, making it eas-
ier for the board to review and de-
cide, as well as for the residents to
understand. Each plan is differ-
ent, complementing the theme of
the restaurant and the guidelines
set by the municipal land use reg-
ulations and the malls master
plan, he said.
What is created is fitting to the
mall, and care is taken in what is
created by that venue that its
not just a table and chairs out-
side, Clifford said.
Outdoor restaurant seating has
appeared in area malls including
PREIT-owned Cherry Hill Mall
and The Voorhees Town Center,
The Promenade in Marlton and
more.

When are two better than one? Always,
especially in the case of Pickles and
Gracie, it's definitely true! These two love
bugs are longtime friends who are loyal
through-and-through. Even though they
spend their time here at the shelter in two
connected cages, you'll always find them
curled up together in one! Both are
enthusiastic affection-seekers who love
nothing more than to be on the receiving
end of pets and cuddles. Originally
brought in as an unfortunate surrender
case, Gracie and Pickles have spent all
their lives together and would hate to see
that change - they'd love to find a forever
home looking to double their pleasure
and adopt them both.

Moorestown]. The presentation
made alluded to the fact that
Moorestown Mall is now up to par
with surrounding malls, he said.
According to Ford, Firebirds is
looking to add 44 outdoors seats,
Osteria 26 seats and Corner Bak-
ery 30 seats. Outdoor landscaping
was also included in the plan and
each restaurant will have heating
lamps for customers to keep
warm while dining outside, Clif-
ford said.
PREIT would be able to move
forward with the outdoor seating
construction as soon as July 17,
but at a risk. Clifford said there is
a 45-day appeal period after publi-
cation.
Someone could appeal the
plans to the zoning board in that
time. This law is the same for all
variances presented to the board.
The board and PREIT con-
firmed all areas, including some-
thing as minute as checking to see
if the restaurants would use dis-
posable plates and utensils, which
might cause issues with trash, the
location of the tables and if any
issues would arise with traffic.
Clifford said PREIT covered all
areas in its plans, even in the land-
scaping to help add to the dining
atmosphere and deterring the
traffic from becoming cumber-
some to the experience, as well as
the malls parking and traffic situ-
ation.
He said PREITs traffic engi-
neer ensured there would be no is-
sues of congestion under the pre-
sented plans. Ford and Clifford
said the zoning boards engineer
would still have to review and ap-
prove landscaping plans going for-
ward.
The consumption of alcohol in
Moorestown was limited to East
Gate and the Moorestown Mall
last year after a court ruling
deemed the restriction to the mall
only was illegal. But there was a
positive outcome to councils deci-
sion to extend the zone.
It is something that most want
with their dinners. It offers now
the affordability of having a glass
of wine with your dinner. Its
something that is attractive to a
lot of people, Clifford said.
We collectively, as a township,
endorse [the outdoor seating]. It is
a trend and a way we envision
successful restaurants.

T
he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someones opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someones character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internets power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram make it easier
to connect people all over the world,
and even easier to do so in a negative
fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.
The state recently released its Uni-
form Crime Reporting rates, and local
police departments have attributed
significant drops in crime to the their
utilization of social media.
In Evesham Township, for example,
crime dropped 21.7 percent. In
Moorestown, crime dropped 36.9 per-
cent. Officials from both departments
say their presence on Facebook and
Twitter has helped tremendously.
Both of those departments use the
social media sites, as well as informa-
tion sharing service Nixle, to not only
notify residents of crimes, alerts and
issues, but also as communication
tools for residents to submit their own
issues and concerns directly to the de-
partment.
Theyve found that its much easier,
and more efficient, for residents to
submit information on the computer
than it is to call in or stop by their of-
fices.
Its great to see that police depart-
ments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and provid-
ing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
Evesham and Moorestown arent
the only towns with police depart-
ments doing this; they are just exam-
ples.
To those departments that are doing
the same, bravo; keep it up. To those
that arent, its time to step up and go
out on a limb. Its worth it.

letter to the editor
Whatever happened to
treating people with respect?
Whatever happened to common cour-
tesy and treating your fellow man with re-
spect?
About two weeks ago I was walking
through an airport terminal trying to lo-
cate where my connecting flight was when
a hurried women walking off the moving
walkway fumed by me and stammered,
Move! I guess excuse me isnt used any-
more?
Throughout my week, all too often, I see
people who do not acknowledge or appreci-
ate the simple mannerly deeds that others
carry out for them.
Whenever a person is generous to open
a door for me, I always make it a point to
express my gratitude with a smile and a
simple thank you. Nowadays, in todays
crazy rushed society, a simple thank you is
hard to find. If we decide to let a person
into traffic, dont we all deserve a courtesy
wave?
I often wondered what makes one per-
son hold the door for the person behind
them, give that courtesy wave, or smile
and say thank you while the next person
doesnt.
Is it the way we were raised, the influ-
ences of the people we decided to sur-
round ourselves with, or is it simply that
our lives have become so overbearing that
it just doesnt cross a persons mind to do
so? Regardless, that is a topic for another
day.
The lesson we should all take from our
experiences is to try not to judge a person
on one bad experience.
For all I know, the lady at the airport
who rudely muttered move may have
been in a car accident on her way to the
airport and decided to take it out on me.
With that, the next time somebody lets
you into traffic or holds the door for you,
dont forget to express your gratitude, no
matter how small the deed.
Lets not let another persons good deed
go unnoticed. It will make for a better com-
munity and society as a whole.

12 THE MOORESTOWN SUN JULY 24-30, 2013
Police: Manpower has increased
with 32 full-time officers
house, county-based system used
to make adjustments where need-
ed.
Most of the departments in
the county use a county-wide
records keeping system, and we
are able to generate reports
through that to give us an idea
where we are at and what we are
doing. We do that frequently so we
are on top of things, he said. We
want to be proactive.
According to Joel Bewley,
spokesman for the Burlington
County Prosecutors Office, the
county invested $4.8 million in
New World Systems a software,
hardware, training and support
company for local government
and public safety agencies using
a federal grant in 1996.
Departments in the county
have the option of using the sys-
tem, and a majority of them do, he
said. When residents dial 911, the
system locates where the call is
coming from. The information
from the call is entered into the
system by the dispatcher and the
proper authorities are sent to the
scene. The program allows direct
communication with an officer
and mobile data terminal located
in squad cars, and departments
can look back and analyze inci-
dents entered in the system, Bew-
ley said.
We view it as a very effective
program, he said.
Lieber said manpower has in-
creased in Moorestown. The de-
partment recently replaced two
retiring officers, and there are 32
full-time officers and four part-
time Class II officers who are
trained and have the same respon-
sibilities as full-time officers. The
buck doesnt stop there. Lieber
said the increased presence in the
police force and records aiding in
department improvements are
not the only things used to help re-
duce crime they use social
media.
Lieber said the department re-
cently signed up for a Twitter ac-
count and uses Nixle and the
townships announcement data-
base to inform residents.
We are trying to keep people
up to date as far as major events
that are occurring, Lieber said.
Our residents are our eyes and
ears. Calling the police helps solv-
ing crimes.
He said Twitter makes it easier
for officers to notify the public
quickly if there has been a burgla-
ry, road closure or even announce-
ments during a natural disaster.
We are keeping the public in-
formed. Thats putting out hun-
dreds of eyes and ears that can as-
sist us, he said.
Lieber encourages residence to
follow the department on Twitter,
@moorestown_PD, and sign up
for Nixle announcements at
www.nixle.com.

Camden Riversharks versus
Somerset Patriots July 26
Enjoy a night at the ballpark
while helping local children at-
tend Y camp by joining the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden Coun-
ties on Friday, July 26, at 7:05 p.m.
to see the Camden Riversharks
versus the Somerset Patriots.
Tickets are $10.
Game highlights include a per-
formance in the seventh inning
stretch by YMCA Broadway
Bound Players and the first
pitch thrown by Tim Kerrihard,
president and CEO of the YMCA
of Burlington and Camden coun-
ties.
A positive camp experience
can help children learn, grow and
thrive, said Dana Collins, execu-
tive director of Child Care and
Camp.
Our Send Kids to Y Camp
campaign is about giving all chil-
dren in Burlington and Camden
counties the opportunity to at-
tend summer day camp. The cam-
paign will provide over $75,000 in
camp scholarships to families in
need.
Additional subsidies of nearly
$200,000 will be provided this year
for camps with special popula-
tions.
This funding will benefit Camp
No Worries (camps for children
living with cancer and their sib-
lings), and Camp Connections
(children with special needs).
To purchase Riversharks tick-
ets or to make an online donation
to support Send Kids to Y Camp,
visit www.ymca-bc.org.
You can also stop by the Mt.
Laurel YMCA or Burlington-
Riverfront YMCA.

This home has recently been reduced from $925,000 to $899,000! Do not hesitate, it will not last long. No detail was overlooked
when custom builder, Blas Ravikio originally built the home for himself and his family. The current owner had plans to put in
a fourth bedroom, but found with the space in the home it was not necessary. However, it is still an option for those who need
the extra bedroom. The kitchen is a cooks dream with all designer appliances. Indoor, and outdoor entertaining, or just relaxing
are a must in this home with a beautiful family room that transcends you to a resort, along with the private backyard that
includes a salt water filtration pool. Own your own personal retreat in the center of Moorestown!
