Experiment No. 1 Performance Test of a Mini Ice Plant (Pull Down Test) I.

OBJECTIVES - To carry out Pull Down Test Procedures - To calculate Actual C.O.P of the System - To calculate Theoretical C.O.P of the Cycle II. THEORY Refrigeration is the process of removing heat from where it is not wanted. Heat is removed from food to preserve its quality and flavor. It is removed from room air to establish human comfort. Therefore, as heat is removed, a space or material become colder. The more heat is removed, the colder it becomes. Mechanical refrigeration, sometimes called compression type refrigeration are highly used process in manufacturing or artificial ice. Mechanical refrigeration is achieved by constantly circulating, evaporating and condensing a fixed supply of refrigerant inside a closed system. III. APPARATUS 1. Mini Ice Plant and its accessories 2. Beaker 3. Potato 4. Digital Thermometer 5. KW-Hour meter 6. Low - side pressure gauge 7. High - side pressure gauge IV. PROCEDURE PROCEDURE 1 1. 2. 3. 4. Determination of salinity of brine water. Using Beaker, place 13.5 liters of water. Weigh 2.5 kg of salt using a weighing scale. Brine solution does not freeze. Record all data to find the weight of salt per liter. For future data.

PROCEDURE 2 1. Follow the pull down test method. Record all data. (use data sheet form) 2. Record all data time for every change in value as appropriate and the corresponding pressure reading. 3. Using the available table for R134a, take the corresponding enthalpy for every increase in pressure. Interpolate as possible. 4. Calculate the coefficient of performance (COP). 5. Remove the brine tank cover and intermediate tank. 6. Through this, fill the brine tank with 13.5 liters of fresh water. 7. Prepare the required amount (in wt.) of sodium chloride for the proper % brine solution see procedure 1. Pour this sodium chloride in tank and stir thoroughly. 8. Make a graph between the time and COP. 9. Switch the main power on. 10. Switch on the condenser fan and brine agitator/stirrer motor. 11. Start the compressor motor. 12. Switch on the agitator system of brine solution in the tank. Note good brine agitation will make the COP to improve. 13. Observe the suction and head pressure gauges of the system and check with your instructor for the proper pressure for the system. 14. Let the unit attain a stabilization condition for at least 5 minutes before taking pertinent data for the test results. Record on the data sheet. 15. Gather this data for every change in value until it reaches the -5 deg. Celsius temperature of brine water. Record on the data sheet. Please refer to the data sheet attached to this manual regarding the data to be gathered during the performance test. 16. Regularly check the suction and head pressure gauges. This may indicate if the system is over or under charge of refrigerant. 17. Compute the data needed by the tables.
