The presentation focuses on the multifaceted use of social media applications such as Facebook and WhatsApp for TL teaching. Students engagement in their learning through the effective use of these applications and how this contributes to differentiated, self-directed and collaborative learning in the TL classroom will be shared. The sharing envisages throwing more light on student engagement in the learning of Tamil Language; with special reference to the use of the hand phone (smartphone) applications that a teacher could use to ensure that student' learning experiences can be hyped-up. This is a presentation based on a Professional Learning Communities (PLC) project. Five lesson packages enhancing students oral skills through picture description will be shared. The session focuses on the use of Reciprocal Teaching to teach students to deal with comprehension texts effectively. It is a small group collaborative effort amongst students facilitated by teachers to enhance their quality of learning. This sharing is about an Action Research project which investigates how intensive reading skills could be developed to encourage students to engage in extensive reading.
