MIRACOSTA COLLEGE MATHEMATICS 150(04)-2950 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I SYLLABUS Spring 2013 Course time & date:

Course Description: This course is the first in a three-semester calculus sequence designed for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering majors. Topics include limits, derivative, an introduction to integration, and applications of integrals. Textbook: Larson, Edwards, Calculus, 9th ed., Brooks/Cole, 2010 Students Learning Outcomes:

1) Given a function, apply the appropriate technique(s) to find the derivative of the function. 2) Given a function, apply the appropriate technique(s) to find the integral of the function. 3) Given an applied problem from differential or integral calculus, apply an appropriate technique to solve the problem. Approved calculator If you do not already have a graphing calculator, the Mathematics Department recommends that you purchase a version of the Texas Instruments TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator. NO other electronic devices are to be out on your desk or turned on during class. This includes ALL other calculators, cell phones, and laptops. Homework: To succeed in this class you must do your homework. Homework will be assigned throughout the semester and will be collected on the same day as the quizzes. Late homework will not be accepted. Quizzes: There will be three (4) quizzes given during the lecture on certain days. Each quiz will consist of at least two problems taken directly from the assigned homework and you will be allowed twenty (20) minutes to complete each quiz. Your cumulative quiz grade will be based on the best 3 of the 4 quizzes. There will be no make-up quizzes.

Exams: There will be 3 exams administered throughout the semester, each worth 100 points. You are allowed to drop one exam (not the final). Therefore there will be no make-up exams. The final exam for this class is on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 2:30-4:30PM

Attendance: All students are expected to attend each class meeting. You are allowed 2 weeks of absences for the semester. Should you exceed this number the Instructor may exclude you from class. If you miss class for any reason, you are responsible for getting the class notes. Only students who are officially registered may participate in this class. If you are given a permission code to add this class, you must officially add the class prior to the next class meeting. Under no circumstances will students be allowed to add this class after the add deadline. A student may be dropped for: lack of prerequisite, disruptive behavior or cheating on exams. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are dropped by delivering the appropriate drop form to Admissions and Records. Disabled Student Services: Students with disabilities who require reasonable accommodations must be approved for services by the Office of Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSP) and should meet with me during my office hours. Academic Integrity and Classroom Behavior: This class will be conducted in accordance with basic standards of academic honesty supported by MiraCosta Colleges Academic Policies, stated in the course catalog, pages 267-275. Cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. MiraCosta Colleges policies covering the Rights and Responsibilities of Students are stated in the course catalog, pages 276-286. Students are expected to respect and obey these standards of student conduct while in class, or on the campus. Charges of misconduct and disciplinary sanctions may be imposed upon those who violate these standards of conduct, or provisions of college regulations.

COLLEGE SUPPORT SERVICES The Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) and the Writing Center (WC) assist students by providing individual and group tutoring, WC drop-ins, learning communities, self-help materials, and student success workshops. Services are free and available to all students during day and evening hours at all MiraCosta College campuses. I recommend that you take advantage of these academic support services.
