L/S T P 2 - 2 Univ. Exam. Marks. Sessional Marks. Duration of Exam 50 50 03 hrs

INTENT To inculcate in the students an awareness of role of various types of surveying in architectural and planning projects. The subject consists of four units: UNIT-I Fundamental Principles of Surveying Definition, objects, classification, principles, units of measurements, scale and methods of fixing stations. Linear Measurements Types of methods, direct measurements, instruments for chaining, chaining, chaining on uneven or sloping ground, errors in chaining, tape corrections. Chain Surveying & Compass Chain triangulation, survey stations, survey lines & offsets, instruments for setting out right angles, problems & obstacles in chaining, plotting a chain survey, compass, instruments for measurement of directions (Surveyors & Prismatic compass) and angles (Sextant & Theodolite), bearing of lines and local attraction. UNIT-II Levelling & Contouring Definition of terms used in levelling, methods of levelling, levelling instruments, temporary adjustments of a level, principles of levelling, booking and reducing levels, contouring, contour interval, characteristics of contours, methods of locating contours, interpolation of contours. Plane Table Surveying Plane tabling & its instruments, methods of plane table surveying, two point & three point problems, errors in plane tabling, advantages and disadvantages of plane tabling. UNIT-III Theodolite and Theodolite Traversing Transit theodolite, temporary adjustments, methods used for measurement of horizontal angles (Repetition & Reiteration), traverse surveying with theodolite, checks in traversing, adjustment of closed traverse.

Tacheometric Surveying Uses of tacheometry, principle of tacheometric surveying, instruments used in tacheometry, systems of tacheometric surveying-stadia system or fixed hair method, determination of tacheometric constants, tangential systems. UNIT-IV Curves Classification of curves, elements of simple circular curve, location of tangent points-chain and tape methods, instrumental methods, transition curves & its types, combined curve and vertical curves. Setting Out Works Controls for setting out (Horizontal & Vertical Control), setting out in vertical direction, positioning of structure and setting out foundation trenches of buildings. Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) & GIS Electronic distance measurements- introduction, basic concepts, basic principle of electronic distance measurements (EDM), Total Station, GIS and remote sensing. INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXAMINER SEVEN questions are to be set selecting at least TWO questions each of 10 marks from UnitI, Unit-II & Unit-III and ONE compulsory question of 10 marks from Unit-IV covering the entire syllabus. Student shall attempt FIVE questions in overall selecting at least ONE question from each unit.

GUIDELINES FOR THE TEACHER The teacher must highlight to make the students understand the principles and techniques of various types of surveying techniques used in construction & planning projects.
