Scope This Specification defines the requirements for wood scaffold planks. The scaffold planks covered by this Specification are recommended for use with all scaffolding except where restricted by load limitations or other site conditions.

Conflicts and Deviations 2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs), Standard Drawings (SASDs) or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the Manager, Consulting Services Department. Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302 and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.

Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) Standard Grading Rules for Southern Pine Lumber West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB) Standard No. 17 Grading Rules for West Coast Lumber 4 Special Requirements 4.1 Solid Sawn Scaffold Planks 4.1.1 Solid sawn scaffold planks shall be rated and marked as scaffold plank grade using the grading rules and grade inspection or supervision services of the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, or other lumber-grading agency accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC). Maximum Moisture Content of Planks Each plank shall be dried so the moisture content does not exceed 19%. Determination of moisture content shall be in accordance with ASTM D4442, Standard Test Methods for Direct Moisture Content Measurement of Wood and Wood-Based Materials. 4.1.3 Dimensions of Scaffold Plank The scaffold plank dimensions shall be as follows and shall be within the tolerances defined by an ALSC certified grading agency: 1. 2. 3. 4.2 Length shall be 3960 mm (13 ft) Nominal width shall be 225 mm (9 in) Nominal thickness shall be 50 mm (2 in)

4.1.2

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) Scaffold Planks 4.2.1 Face Surfaces The face surfaces of LVL scaffold planks shall not be sanded or

machined smooth, coated or treated in any way that increases the inservice slip hazard. 4.2.2 Adhesive The adhesive used for manufacture of LVL scaffold planks shall be manufactured using Wet-Use Adhesives conforming to ASTM D2559 (or equivalent national or international standard) and suitable for bonding of structurally critical components subjected to exterior (wet use) weather exposure. 4.2.3 Dimensions of LVL Scaffold Planks The dimensions of LVL scaffold planks and the tolerances on dimension shall be in accordance with dimensions specified by the manufacturer and shall comply with the following limits. 1) 2) 3) 4.2.4 Length shall be 3960 mm (13 ft) The width of planks shall not be less than 225 mm (9 in) The thickness shall not be less than 38 mm (1 in).

Span Capability LVL scaffold planks shall have a minimum allowable span of 1.8 m (6 ft) for a three-person Rated Load Capacity, with the load defined and span determined in accordance with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1926.451 and Subpart L, Appendix A. Maximum allowable spans for other Rated Load Capacities as defined in OSHA shall be provided by the manufacturer. The calculation of span for each load shall be calculated for dry use single span application using allowable strength properties determined in accordance with the requirements of ANSI/ASSE A10.8, Appendix C, Procedure A for Structural Composite Lumber (SCL) and design deflection not exceeding one sixtieth of the span. Calculations shall use section properties based on the net cross-section taking account of specified tolerances. The allowable span shall be the span obtained after rounding the calculated span down to the next lower 0.1 m (or 6") increment.

Inspection and Testing 5.1 Solid Sawn Scaffold Planks Mechanical Testing: Solid sawn scaffold planks not graded in accordance with

paragraph 4.1.1 shall be mechanically safe-tested by an independent third party. These tests shall be performed by laying each plank across two supports providing a clear span of 3050 mm (10 ft). A concentrated load of 115 kg (250 lbs) shall then be placed at mid-span, and the total deflection from a horizontal line drawn between the supports shall be measured. The plank shall be rejected if the total deflection exceeds 50 mm (2 in). 5.2 LVL Scaffold Planks 5.2.1 Independent Certification LVL scaffold planks shall be quality certified by an independent third party product certification grading or inspection agency as suitable for use as a scaffold plank in exterior (wet use) weather exposed applications and for compliance with the requirements specified in this Specification. 5.2.2 Verification of Strength and Rigidity In addition to other quality verification procedures ordinarily used by the manufacturer, LVL scaffold planks shall be individually proof tested and their rigidity monitored to verify the strength and rigidity claimed as basis for the determination of spanning capability. Test procedures and acceptance criteria shall be approved by the Quality Certification body or Grading Agency and shall form part of the basis for Product Certification required by this Specification. 6 Marking 6.1 Solid sawn scaffold planks shall bear the SCAFFOLD PLANK or SCAF PLK scaffold plank grade stamp of a grading agency approved by the American Lumber Standards Committee, and shall also be stamped with the following stamp in 2 places on both the top and bottom faces. SAUDI ARAMCO SCAFFOLD PLANK 6.2 LVL scaffold planks shall be marked as follows. 6.2.1 Each LVL scaffold plank shall be stamped or embossed along at least one the edge with the following: a) Registered product mark or brand that in conjunction with a published specification clearly identifies scaffold plank spanning capability.

Name or mark of the Product Certification body. The words PROOF TESTED, SCAFFOLD PLANK & OSHA Month and year of manufacture.

In addition, planks shall be face branded at least once with the manufacturers name or registered Mill Number that identifies the mill of manufacture and at least twice on each face with Saudi Aramco and SCAFFOLD PLANK.
