JAMMU, JULY 27: The villagers of Shah Pur Kerni along LoC in Poonch sector on Saturday woke up to a heavy firing along the border by Pakistani soldiers using heavy machine guns and RPGs. Indian troops also fired which lead to heavy exchange of firing in which at least one Pakistani soldier was killed. Panic gripped the area as firing intensified. "Pak troops have targeted Indian posts by firing rocket projectile grenades (RPGs) and heavy machine guns along LoC in Doda Battalion forward area in Poonch district since 0730 hours on Saturday," a senior Army officer said. Indian border troops retaliated effectively, resulting in heavy exchanges which were on for five hours, the officer said. There was no loss of life or injury to anyone in the firing, he said. Top Army officials are monitoring the situation in wake of the heavyfiring along the border line and troops have been asked in other forward areas to intensify round the clock vigilance. The firing triggered panic among the people in the area, especially in Shahpur Kerni forward belt in Poonch where it stretched for five hours. This is fifth ceasefire violation in July this year. JAMMU: A batch of 440 devotees on Saturday left the Jammu base camp for the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir, police said. A convoy of 16 vehicles, carrying the 30th batch of 440 devotees, left the Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar at around 4:50 am to pay obeisance at the cave shrine in the Kashmir Valley, police said. The batch, includes 284 men, 62 women and eight children, apart from 86 priests, are on their way to twin base camps of Pahalagam and Baltal in the Valley, they added. With today's batch, a total of 48,714 pilgrims have left Jammu base camp for Amarnath so far.

NEW DELHI, JULY 27: A group, claiming to be "independent body of fans of Shri Narendra Modi", has launched the Namo Android smartphone that will be available 'soon'. Namo, is short of course for Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, and Chairman of Central Election Campaign Committee of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of India's leading political parties. Namo is also, the group shares, short for, Nextgeneration Android Mobile Odyssey, as the Namo phone is based on Android. Explaining the motiva-

tion in releasing the phone, the group says on its website, "We are fans of Shri, Narendra Modi, our forthcoming future leader of our great nation India, we are manufacturing latest Android handset dedicated to the IRONMAN of modern India." The website is scant on details about Namo, the smartphone, though it does mention some of the specifications. Namo will sport a 5inch Corning Glass 2 display and be powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6589 chipset. It will have a 13megapixel camera. The

phone will supposedly come in 4 variants, with the amount of RAM and internal storage varying between 1-2GB and 16-64GB respectively. There's no word yet on the price or availability of Namo smartphone. To be clear, it seems what the group plans to do is import off-the-shelf smartphones from China to rebrand and market them, similar to what many other Indian smartphone brands are already doing. The Army, BSF and local police too are villains in Kashmir. They have foiled the nefarious designs of separatists to allow Kashmir become Pakistan. They have succeeded in foiling the evil designs of Paki masters through brave deeds. Thousand of militants have been killed and more are definitely waiting to be killed if they venture to cross the border. Shah and Rashid, represent two different streams in Kashmir politics. Shah is a separatist, wants to see the back of India from Kashmir (For them Kashmir means whole of Jammu and Ladakh as well). Er Rashid, an MLA in the State Assembly, God knows whether he is an engineering graduate or not but the prefix Er with his first name suggests that he is inspired from Pak occupied Kashmir, where people use such prefixes, among them, Barrister being the most popular. It is a primitive and not so decent way of using prefixes of your avocation with your name. By this convention, separatists must have names like anti- India Yasin Malik, AntiHindu Syed Salahudin, ProFreedom Shabir Shah or Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani. May be they show their true names in future inspired by Er Rashid. With avocation of spreading canards and falsehood, the separatists are proving again what they are. They will not listen to reason or truth or the promise of investigation. They will not wait for inquiry to come out with its findings. That is not their way of politics. Playing with the sensibilities of people is all such men have learned all their lives. It promotes them, propels their divisive ideology. One sample of Shabir Shahs wisdom loaded statement proves the way he is seeking to play his disruptive politics. The death of freedom is preferred over the life of slavery because there is no protection of honor, dignity and respect in slavery. If Kashmiris would not have been subjugated then the incidents like Gool Ramban, Shopian and today Hadara Kantwara would never have taken place. It should be apparent for Kashmiri nation in this regard that the incessant violation of their respect, honor and dignity will continue without any hurdle, he said . Right Mr. Shah, death of freedom is better than death of slavery but how will that death come when the most important element of slavery is present. Where is slavery in Kashmir? Kashmiris have themselves under a legal process and under the undisputed leadership of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah acceded to India, so, how Kashmiris are slave. The fate of nations and states is not changed overnight on the whims and fancies of few people who are broadly against the principle of co-existence with people belonging to other faiths. It is for this reason, so called struggle that Geelani, Shah, Malik, Umar seek to flout is bound to fail. People like Shabir or Malik are propounding anarchy and unrest but curiously when it comes to their own security they bank upon those forces who they seek to malign. Such perfidy and falsehood will only rebound. There is a systematic method in the thinking of separatists. They will not listen to other side. They shall not think for a second that BSF may have some truth to speak. India, Indian security forces, represents a big source of falsehood for them. They have allowed themselves to be grown under such environment where India and its forces are a big evil. They shall not wait for the inquiry to submit its report, for them anything wrong happens in Kashmir it is due to India. mentation of testosterone in the form of 5-alpha dihydrotestosterone (DHT) pellets reverses Parkinson`s pathology in male mice," the researcher said. "In men, testosterone levels are intimately coupled to many disease processes," Pahan said. Typically, in healthy males, testosterone level is the maximum in the mid-30s, which then drop about one percent each year. However, testosterone levels may dip drastically due to stress or sudden turn of other life events, which may make somebody more vulnerable to Parkinson`s disease. "Therefore, preservation of testosterone in males may be an important step to become resistant to Parkinson`s disease," Pahan added. WASHINGTON: Scientists at Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) have identified genes that are potential targets for therapeutic drugs against aggressive breast cancer. Out of the 1.5 million women diagnosed with breast cancer in the world annually, nearly one in seven of these is classified as triple negative. Patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) have tumours that are missing three important proteins that are found in other types of breast cancer. The absence of these three proteins make TNBC patients succumb to a higher rate of relapse following treatment and have lower overall survival rates. There is currently no effective therapy for TNBC. The Minister inquired about the status of embankment work along the garden taken up at a cost of Rs 2.80 crore. He asked Irrigation and Flood Control department to complete the project in double shifts to save the prestigious garden and the property of the people residing close to the Nallah from flash floods. He was informed that during recent incessant rain, the flash flood washed away some agriculture land situated along the nallah. The Minister asked the concerned

authorities to raise the height of nallah walls so that that soil erosion of agricultural land due to flash floods could be stopped. Meanwhile, Mr. Bhalla inspected the garden and was told that the work on landscaping, development of nurseries, fencing, construction of pathways, toilet blocks, mali huts, illumination, drinking water and irrigation water storage reservoirs, parking and entry gate plaza involving Rs 13.57 crore is in full swing. Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for sales or for use as raw materials in cosmetic and perfume industry and the pharmaceutical sector. The persons associated with this field are called floriculturists. Officially Floriculture began in the late 1800's in England where flowers were grown in large estates, and now has spread to most other countries as well. The floral industry today has grown to much larger proportions and offers a wide scope for growth and profits. The countries involved in the import of flowers are Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Japan while those involved in export are Columbia, Israel, Spain and Kenya. In India, Floriculture industry comprises flower trade, production of nursery plants and potted plants, seed and bulb production, micro propagation and extraction of essential oils. Though the annual domestic demand for the flowers is growing at a rate of over 25% and international demand at around Rs 90,000 crore India's share in international market of flowers is negligible. India has a blooming future as far as floriculture is concerned. Enormous genetic diversity, varied agro climatic conditions, versatile human resources etc offer India a unique scope for judicious employment of existing resources and exploration of avenues yet untouched. Karnataka is the leader in floriculture, accounting for 75% of India's total flower production. The state has the highest area under modern cut flowers, and 40 flower growing and exporting units. The expert committee set up by Govt. of India for promotion of export oriented floriculture units has identified Bangalore, Pune, New Delhi and Hyderabad as the major areas suitable for such activity especially for cut flowers. APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) is the registering authority for such units. The employment opportunities in this field are as varied as the nature of work itself. One can join the field of floriculture as farm/estate managers, plantation experts and supervisors, project coordinators etc. Research and teaching are some other avenues of employment in the field. Marketing of Floriculture products for different ventures is emerging as a potential segment of this field. Besides one can work as consultant, landscape architect etc with proper training. One can also work as entrepreneur and offer employment to others. In addition to these careers which involve research and actual growing of crops, floriculture also provides service career opportunities which include such jobs as floral designers, groundskeepers, landscape designers, architects and horticultural therapists. Such jobs require practitioners to deal directly with clients. Professional qualification combined with an inclination towards gardening and such other activities produces efficient floriculturists and landscaping professionals. The skills and knowledge required are imparted under the professional courses of floriculture and landscaping. ELIGIBILITY & COURSE AREAS Floriculture is not available as a subject at the undergraduate/degree level. Those who wish to join the floriculture stream should enroll for an undergraduate course in Agriculture (i.e a BSc Agriculture degree) after which they can opt for an MSc in Horticulture at the post graduate level. An MSc in Horticulture offers specialisations in floriculture,

pomology (cultivation of fruits), and olericulture ( cultivation of vegetables). Students graduating in these subjects find jobs with companies as supervisors, farm or estate managers, handling largescale production of certain varieties of flowers. A combined knowledge of floriculture with management enables one to get managerial or marketing positions with organisations involved in the processing and marketing of flowers and flowering plants. Those with PhD in floriculture, horticulture and related fields can get placed with reputed Research & Development cells of companies and corporate houses. Course Areas: Courses in floriculture are available as specialisations at the postgraduate and doctoral levels. Besides there are Certificate courses and diploma courses offered by some universities. Most colleges do not conduct a separate course for floriculture or horticulture at the under-graduate level, but treat it as part of the academic curriculum of agriculture. The basic eligibility criteria for a B.Sc. in Agriculture is 10+2 with sciences including Physics and Biology. For

an M.Sc. in Horticulture, one must have a B.Sc. degree in Agriculture or a related subject. Over 65% MBA seats remain vacant

NAGPUR: The MBA degree, once coveted, seems to have lost its sheen. A global slowdown and lack of employment opportunities have taken this course the engineering way with seats going abegging. Figures provided by joint director for technical education Gulab Thakre for the Nagpur region show a disturbing trend of students losing interest in taking up courses in local colleges. Out of 5,100 MBA seats in 56 colleges of six districts under Nagpur region, only 1,770 have been taken after the end of all admission rounds. This means a whopping 3,330 seats - about 65% -- will remain vacant this year, across all colleges coming under Nagpur University. The situation seems same across the state. DTE sources claimed that out of over 45,700 MBA seats in Maharashtra, only 12,321 seats were filled so far. Some 37 colleges surrendered over 2,000 minority seats for general category in order to get more students. Clearly, the MBA bubble has burst in the state. All top colleges, where getting admission was once a dream, witnessed a severe downfall in number of students. These include Dr Ambedkar, Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh, GS College, Tirpude, CIBMRD, Priyadarshini, CP and Berar, Ramdeobaba, Wanjari, Guru Nanak, KDK, Datta Meghe, Pandav, Central India, Real, Radhakrishnan, Renaissance, Shantiniketan, SB Jain, Kavi Kulguru (Ramtek), Sardar Patel (Gondia), and Nabira (Katol) apart from eight belonging to GH Raisoni group. Except NU's Department of Business Management, none of the 55 other colleges filled up their quota of seats. Interestingly, some less known and new colleges got good response with a majority of their seats filled up. They include- Kamla Nehru Mahavidyalya, Green Heaven Institute, NITGraduate School, JD College of Engineering, and Tulsiramji Gaikwad-Patil College among others. DTE sources, however, added that they had received many complaints of irregularities by colleges that were also application receipt centres (ARCs) for the centralized admissions. They allegedly took password from candidates and changed the priority to put their own name on top. They added the present number of students may increase slightly as many colleges had provisionally admitted final year students whose results were yet to be declared by NU and other universities. DTE admits students into banned colleges Despite NU's ban on 250 colleges for operating without teachers and infrastructure, DTE has allowed admission to a couple of them offering MBA courses. These are Kirsan Mission's Institute of Management at Gondia and Dr Arun Motghare College of Management in Bhandara. Thakre defended DTE's move stating that director Subhash Mahajan had taken legal opinion in this regard. "Even the high court hadn't banned admissions into these colleges. We have made it clear that the admissions would be subject to court's orders and students should do so at their own risk. I was surprised that despite being marked in red ink, the students took admissions in these colleges," he said. Over 50 Delhi University students Uttar Pradesh bags award for free denied PhD admission
NEW DELHI: More than 50 Delhi University students have been denied admission to the PhD course in Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies due to late declaration of the master's result by the same varsity, an official said on Friday. "It is a travesty that these candidates were denied the opportunity for admissions due to no fault of theirs. It is DU (Delhi University) that did not declare the result of the master's examination in May," said Sachin N, elected executive member of Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA). Students applying for the PhD programme were called for the entrance examination. Those who qualified were called for the viva. It was only during the admission process that the authorities notified that admission could not be granted as their results had not been declared. "They should be granted provisional admission till the results are out. It is very unfair because these students had also already declared in their admission forms that their results were awaited," added Sachin N. He added that since Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies is an interdisciplinary department, such a process would lead to students losing an academic year.

No takers for over 50k engineering seats in Maharashtra

NAGPUR: It's a double whammy for educational institutions offering both engineering and management courses. A staggering 33,000 MBA and 50,000 engineering seats have remained vacant across Maharashtra, raising serious questions about both these once popular courses. Once, engineering and MBA combination was considered fail-safe mantra for landing a plum job. Even AICTE had asked the universities to start integrated courses of engineering and management considering their popularity. Statistics provided by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) indicate that may no longer be the case. At the end of third counselling round in Aurangabad on Wednesday, 50,603 engineering seats remained vacant out of over 1.55 lakh in 366 colleges across 12 universities. At the end of second round, 54,941 seats were vacant, while after first about 93,000 were not filled up. Over 4,200 seats were filled up in the last round. Though over 2.80 lakh candidates appeared for engineering entrance (MT-CET), not even half have taken admission. Last year over 44,000 seats were not filled up. Though technical education director Subhash Mahajan refused to take calls, he had earlier said that two new engineering colleges were started in the state while over 10,000 seats were added in existing ones after AICTE granted permission to enhance capacity, including starting second shift. He had said that about 7,500 seats were cancelled by colleges voluntarily. Sources said this was for the first time leading colleges like VJTI, Mumbai, and CoE, Pune, witnessed vacancies in third round as admissions to IITs and NITs commenced late. Many students opted out after getting a seat in these premier institutions. Accordingly, the seats were later filled up during first day of counselling round on July 16. DTE statistics further indicated that students gave least preference to branches like IT and electronics and telecommunications (E&T), while core ones like civil and mechanical ruled the roost. Interestingly, Pune University with 75 colleges has dislodged Nagpur University with 58 in as having most vacant seats. In Pune area, 15,201 remained unfilled while the number was 8,862 in NU. Shivaji University in Kolhapur is third with 5,934 seats. Interestingly, Dr Babasaheb Technological University in Lonere, Raigad, and SNDT Women's university, Mumbai, have no vacant engineering seats. University of Mysore council amends PhD regulations

MYSORE: The University of Mysore limited the number of PhD students who can be enrolled by a guide. The university also made it clear that getting through in the entrance test for admission to PhD doesn't ensure that the candidate will get admission. It has clarified that passing in the test makes the candidate eligible for PhD degree. However, candidates have three years to get admission after clearing the test. The council approved the amendments to PhD regulations, which specify that 'successful completion of entrance test just implies the eligibility of a candidate for admission to PhD degree in the university, but shall not guarantee an admission to PhD degree programme'. A committee constituted by the vice-chancellor had suggested the amendments, which were approved by the Syndicate at its meeting on May 28. Council, the apex body on academic matters, approved the amendments, which has specified the number of candidates who can be enrolled for PhD degree by a guide. Earlier, it was eight, which has now been reduced to six. It has also limited the number of candidates working on projects funded through UoM. Each guide can supervise two students, which was not specified earlier. The varsity also decided to hold the entrance exam in September. The amended regulations will be sent to the governor-chancellor for clearance. Amendments were suggested to conform to the directives of UGC. During the meeting, it was stressed that UoM should ensure that there are no malpractices in PhD degrees, which, the members felt, will dent the reputation of the university which will celebrate its century in three years. Some of the members objected to UoM's move to tie up with educational institutions which are outside its jurisdiction. They also opposed the move to partner with institutions based in Bangalore, arguing that Bangalore University can extend affiliation. The Council approved new courses, including two to teach Tibetan and Chinese languages and literature.

Another fake US varsity closes leaving Indian students stranded

WASHINGTON: Closure of another bogus American university has left hundreds of students, many of them from India's Andhra Pradesh state, scrambling for options for continuing their studies. The University of Northern Virginia was ordered to cease operations and close immediately July 16, after the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia revoked the college's license to operate. UNVA operated on the ground floor of an office building in Annandale, a Washington suburb in neighbouring Virginia, for 15 years, according to the Washington Post. It remained unaccredited for the last five years and failed four audits by the state for not hiring "qualified faculty." The council said once it has received the student academic and financial records from the university it would communicate with students "regarding the impact of revocation and currently enrolled students' options for continuing education." Students who are in the US on FI visas were also advised to make inquiries regarding immigration, Optional Practical Training (OPT) and the SEVP/SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Programme and Information System) from the US Department of Homeland Security at (202) 282 -8000 or via its website at www.dhs.gov. In a 2011 raid on UNVA federal officials found, almost exclusively enrolled foreign students from India whom the college had helped obtain visas by exploiting loopholes, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The next month, UNVA's chancellor David Lee resigned following separate reports of his kinky personal life. Lee had advertised his private basement sex dungeon on a BDSM website, saying he was seeking "attractive submissive" women, according to The Smoking Gun, which posted photos from Lee's profile on the site on Aug 1, 2011. Many Indian students had transferred to UNVA from Tri-Valley University, another bogus university in California, that was shut down by immigration authorities in 2011 for alleged visa fraud.

sive interviews with Radha Bhatt, who joined in 1951 and, 15 years later, assumed charge of the ashram after Sarala Devi voluntarily relinquished her responsibilities. Radha behn is a person of great charm and strength of character. I carry a vivid recollection of a march I attended 30 years ago against unregulated mining in the region of Chandak-Sikhrana, in Pithoragarh district, when her ability to inspire the Kumauni villagers was strikingly manifest. Another leading Gandhian who features in Rebecca Klenk's narrative is Vimla Bahuguna (ne Nautiyal). She grew up in Tehri Garhwal, a deeply patriarchal, parochial princely state which did not even have a high school for girls. Fortunately, her father had heard of Sarala Devi and her Lakshmi Ashram. She was sent there to study and be trained; later, she returned to her home district to set up an ashram and school of her own. With her husband Sunderlal Bahuguna, Vimla behn played a critical role in the environmental movement in the hills. To those who know Uttarakhand, Radha Bhatt and Vimla Bahuguna are iconic figures. Yet Klenk also pays close attention to less known graduates of Lakshmi Ashram, to their individual and intellectual development, to their transformation from shy, timid girls from poor familes to self-confident and articulate women shaping progressive social change in Uttarakhand and beyond. Her narrative covers several generations of activists, from those who were directly influenced by Sarala Devi to those who never knew the founder but yet made creative use of her message. Rebecca Klenk characterizes Lakshmi Ashram as an experiment in "Gandhian modernity", which offered "rural girls from a marginal region a sense of inclusion, urgency, purpose, and importance." It "promised to integrate the Uttarakhand Himalaya into the new nation by training women to become modern citizens and village leaders who would extend Gandhi's program of real swaraj, or independence, into hill villages." The girls came from all social backgrounds Brahmin, Rajput, Bania, Dalit and Bhotiya. In the stories they told their American interlocutor, the ashram "was about social struggles and change, and about becoming part of the nation and the world." Over a period of six decades, writes Klenk, the graduates of Lakshmi Ashram have "creatively drawn upon Gandhian ideals to demand women's rights, as well as economic and environmental justice, and to articulate a critique of the ways in which liberalization and democracy, despite rhetoric to the contrary, have failed to provide decent lives for allIndian citizens." Reading Educating Activists, I was struck by the open-minded, non-dogmatic way in which these social workers interpreted Gandhi's message. They adapted it to contemporary hopes and aspirations. Employment generation and livelihood security were for them as critical as self-control and personal austerity. I was also impressed by the sense of institutional continuity. Sarala Devi left the ashram 20 years after founding it. After two decades at the helm, Radha Bhatt likewise handed over the responsibility to a younger colleague. This reminded me of the similarly smooth transition in the Self-Employed Women's Association in Ahmedabad, whose founder, Ela Bhatt, also gracefully withdrew herself from day-to-day supervision, so that younger leaders could take charge. Such institutions are exceptional, for in most cases, the man or woman who founds a non-governmental organization cannot abide giving up control and authority. Reading these two books now, in the wake of the tragedy in Uttarakhand, was an especially poignant experience. It also prompted a series of questions. Does a region that produces such outstandingly selfless Indians deserve such a cruel fate? In the work of repair and restoration that lies ahead, will the state and the Central government seek out the support, and knowledge, of the remarkable social activists who still live and work in the state? Or will they be guided by other, shallower, more short-term considerations?

FACE THE BATLA TRUTH A Delhi court's verdict on the Batla House encounter
case is a slap on the face of terror apologists, including some politicians and human rights activists. On Thursday, the court convicted Shahzad Ahmed, a suspected Indian Mujahideen operative, for the murder of Delhi Police Special Cell Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in the September 19, 2008, shootout. This in effect rubbishes the claims of bleeding hearts that the encounter was fake. Leading that list has been the Congress's loose cannon and general secretary, Mr Digvijaya Singh, who has repeatedly denounced the encounter as fake, even when the Government his party leads said otherwise. But that did not prevent him from using the encounter to manufacture a false sense of victimisation of the Muslim community. This was most evident in the manner in which he and his colleagues campaigned in Azamgarh, the hometown of the accused, during the 2011 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. Congress leaders left no stone unturned to express their sympathies for the so-called 'victims' of the Batla House encounter, no matter that the accused were being tried for terror activities. Few can forget how Congressman Salman Khurshid catered to the lowest common denominator when he claimed that his party president Sonia Gandhi had wept bitterly after she was shown gruesome photographs from the encounter. These comments were, in fact, just one element of the larger minority appeasement package that UPA regime had prepared, that included a 4.5 per cent reservation for Muslims within the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs. Finally there was Congress scion Rahul Gandhi's visit to Azamgarh around the same time. But the angry protesters that he met with and the rout that his party suffered at the hustings proved that the voters had seen through the Congress's ploy and refused to play along. However, the likes of Mr Singh never got the message, and even even now stick to the stand that the Batla House encounter was fake. Mr Singh and others are free to live in denial but the fact remains that Thursday's judgement is only the latest addition to mounting evidence that the encounter was a genuine police raid on what has now proven to be a terrorist safe house. As far back as July 2009, for instance, the National Human Rights Commission had opined that neither the Batla House encounter was staged nor was there any human rights violation during the operation. Its decision was later endorsed by the Supreme Court. Of course, none of this will deter rights activists who remain convinced that Ahmed and his gang were victims of police excess; no, they will continue to peddle discredited conspiracy theories - such as how the newspaper photograph that showed Inspector Sharma's shirt was not covered in blood is proof that he was shot in the back. Forensic experts will tell you that bleeding from firearms injuries happens through exit wounds, not at the point of entry. The photograph shows Sharma's shirt ripped on his left shoulder where one of two bullets hit him; the profuse bleeding on the back is from the other bullet that entered the right side of his abdomen and exited through the hip, proving without doubt that he was fired at from two directions.

The remarkable social activists of Uttarakhand

I wrote, in my last column about the precocious environmental work of Mira Behn (Madeleine Slade), the British admiral's daughter who became a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. I write this time of another Englishwoman whose commitment to, and understanding of, the beautiful and fragile Himalaya was even deeper. Catherine Mary Heilman was born in London in 1901, of mixed English-German parentage. Her father, a goldsmith, was interned during World War I because, in an ethnic sense, he was 'alien'. During and after the war, his daughter faced hostility from xenophobes too. Then she met some Indian students, who told her about Gandhi and the freedom struggle. This inspired Catherine to come out to India in 1932, to join the staff of a school in Udaipur. Two years later, she met Gandhi for the first time. For the next few years, she was based largely in Sevagram, working with Gandhian experiments in basic education. Her admiration for Gandhi grew, yet she also came to appreciate the rock-like solidity of Kasturba, whose self-effacing support had done so much to make the Mahatma's work possible. Catherine had now taken an Indian name Sarala Devi. She felt fulfilled in Gandhi'sashram; however, the climate of central India did not suit her. She suffered from dysentery, and more worryingly, from malaria. From Gandhi's friend and follower, Acharya J.B. Kripalani, she came to know of an ashram in Almora set up to propagatekhadi. So Sarala went northwards, to come under the care of Shantilal Trivedi, the Gujarati Gandhian who ran the ashram in Almora. She loved the hills, the woods and the views especially, and very quickly made herself at home here. In 1942, the Quit India movement broke out. The Almora district witnessed sustained protests. Farmers and students took out processions, hoisted the banned national flag, and shouted slogans against the British. The State came down hard. Hundreds of men were arrested, and also some women. Sarala did not herself join the open protests, yet her sympathy with the protesters was marked. She visited them in prison, provided succour to their families, and carried messages to and from activists who were underground. Finally, she was also arrested, and spent two terms in prison. Her incarceration made Sarala's identification with the Indian cause complete. After she was released, she chose to start a girls' school in memory of Kasturba Gandhi (who had died in prison during the Quit India movement). The Uttarakhand society was extremely conservative; here girls worked in the fields and in the kitchen, and were not encouraged to educate themselves. The British-born Indian set out to change this. She acquired a cottage in Kausani named Lakshmi Ashram, and prevailed upon Congress workers to send their daughters there. As she recalled, "some elderly, conservative elements in the village, forever shaking their heads, accused us of breaking all the old social rules, that our girls would be looked upon as having lost their caste, and then how would they get married?" The girls in Lakshmi Ashram grew their own vegetables, raised their own cows, cooked their food and cleaned their premises. They also learnt their letters, with the curriculum, based on Gandhian principles, teaching languages, science and social studies, and livelihood skills such as weaving. The girls also ran the ashram office and kept the accounts. Sarala's wards became self-confident, capable young women, who, after they graduated from the ashram, went out into the world, working as teachers and social workers. Some started schools of their own. Together, they created a quiet, silent revolution in Uttarakhandi society. Sarala inspired some very capable men to join the Gandhian movement as well. Through the 1960s and 1970s, graduates and associates of Lakshmi Ashram played major roles in struggles against alcoholism, deforestation, and the siting of large dams in the hills. As she grew older, Sarala grew more pessimistic about the direction that her nation and the world were taking. "By keeping man far removed from Nature", she wrote despairingly in 1976, "by making a slave to the machine in the spheres of production and entertainment; through the rapidly increasing pollution of air, water and natural resources; the excess of words and speed; the breakdown in family relations and concern for society"- by all this, "mankind is now facing a condition of unprecedented crisis in the areas of both mental and physical health." The main milestones in the life of Sarala Devi are covered in her memoirs, first published in Hindi in 1976 (she died in 1982). These are now available in a readable English translation by David Hopkins, and published by Pahar in Nainital under the title,A Life in Two Worlds. Her legacy, meanwhile, has been analysed in a fine recent book by the anthropologist, Rebecca Klenk, entitled Educating Activists: Development and Gender in the Making of Modern Gandhians. Klenk first visited Lakshmi Ashram in 1991, and has been back many times since, spending weeks and months speaking with and observing its girls at work and at study. LOST OPPORTUNITY
When two academic luminaries have an argument, lesser mortals interested in the subject or the theme gets enriched. Arguments are also one of the ways through which knowledge advances and points get sharpened and clarified. For these reasons, no serious academic or intellectual resents a debate or difference of opinion. What is objected to is what Amartya Sen has called "a brawl" where scoring hits and personal attacks become more important than the substance of the difference. Thus, there are grounds to feel happy and sad with the statement of differences between Mr Sen and his contemporary, Jagdish Bhagwati. The reasons for happiness are obvious. Two of India's best economists have brought their differences into the public domain. This has the potential for opening up a debate and discussion on the nature of India's economic growth, its priorities and its future requirements. Such a potential exists because neither Mr Sen nor Mr Bhagwati deny that economic growth is a necessary condition for India's social development. The disagreements - minor or major - between the two economists could become a fertile and creative quarrel. Alas this is not how things have turned out and herein lie the reasons for sadness. A disagreement between two economists over economic issues has now come to acquire a different dimension. For this, the two protagonists are not responsible. But there have also been instances of factual misrepresentation that were unwarranted. Now things have reached such a pass that no serious discussion or dialogue between the economists is possible. More is the pity. Animosity has come to prevail over a rational exchange of ideas and views. This has happened, to an extent, because of ill-informed people making personal and unnecessary comments against Mr Sen. This show of extreme bad taste has not only lowered the level of the discussion but has, in fact, made debate impossible. This descent of a potentially healthy debate into the quicksand of gladiatorial combat is perhaps a peculiarly Indian phenomenon. Indians argue endlessly but they often do not argue on the right issues and also often argue with malice. Indians appear to be incapable of separating the personal and the intellectual. Thus a debate over ideas gets mired in personal envy and jealousy. In this particular case, some people who have no business commenting on economic issues, which are at the heart of the debate, have queered the pitch by their comments. In the world of academics and, more emphatically, in a democracy, disagreements and dissent should become an integral part of the prevailing culture. The differences between Mr Sen and Mr Bhagwati could have been a landmark, setting the standard of articulating intellectual differences. Circumstances have prevented this from happening. Yet let difference and disagreements thrive.

Dog eared solutions must be discarded

for setting up sterilisation-cum- dog-adoption shelters in a bid to control the population of stray dogs. The move is said to be in response to the decline in the number of sterilisation surgeries on stray dogs following the trifurcation of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi into North Delhi, East Delhi and South Delhi Municipal Corporations. It is attributed to the location of the nine NGOs performing sterilisation operations in the area under South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the consequent decline in Animal Birth Control surgeries in the other two municipal bodies, and a sharp increase in the number of stray dogs in both. Any attempt to make Delhi's streets free of stray dogs by confining them in shelters will totally dislocate the ABC programme and cause their population to soar. In terms of removing them from the streets, it will have the same effect as killing them, which, when in vogue, had no impact on the continuing increase in their numbers. Several studies by eminent veterinary practitioners and surgeons have underscored the futility of killing. Dr JF Reece writes in 'Dogs and Dog Control in Developing Countries', in The State of Animals 2005 (Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society Press, Washington DC 2005): "In Delhi, a concerted effort at dog removal killed a third of the straying dogs with no reduction in dog population". Culling has been equally futile elsewhere in India. In fact, it has failed everywhere else in the world. Dr Reece writes in the same article, "In Hong Kong approximately 20,000 dogs were killed by the Government and another 13,000 by welfare organisations every yearwith little impact on the free-roaming dog population.

In Ecuador, the elimination of 12-25 per cent of the dog population every year for five years did not reduce the dog population (WHO 1988)." He also cites the example of rural Australia and Kathmandu to make the same point. The Guidelines for Dog Population Management, released by the World Health Organisation and World Society for the Protection of Animals in May 1990, gives the reason. It states, "Each habitat has a specific carrying capacity for each species" which depends "on the availability, quality and distribution of the resources (shelter, food, water) to it. The density of population for higher vertebrates (including dogs) is almost always near the carrying capacity of the environment. Any reduction in the population density through additional mortality is rapidly compensated by better reproduction and survival. In other words, when dogs are removed, the survivors' life expectancy increases because they have better access to resources." The argument that such a situation will not arise if all stray dogs in a city or State or country are killed at one go, holds little water. Nowhere has such a venture succeeded. With all dogs killed, dogs from other areas will move in, particularly when garbage is lying all over. Canines are territorial. Those living in one area will not allow dogs from other areas to come in. That is why one notices that each area has its own resident stray canines with very rare additions to their ranks. With sterilised and vaccinated dogs returned to their areas, keeping unsterilised and unvaccinated dogs out, the authorities implementing the ABC programme can progressively move into other areas. During the last financial year, even more tourism infrastructure projects would have been sanctioned to the State, but it failed to submit utilisation certificates. If strays from an area, say A, are killed or put in dog pounds, those from other areas will take their place. People conducting the ABC programme will then have to return to A, where the newcomers, with no other takers for the resources of the area, will have proliferated rapidly, and begin neutering all over again. Indeed, the experience of A will be repeated in all other areas and the exercise of sterilising and vaccinating stray dogs will have to be carried on indefinitely with no end in sight. No ABC programme can succeed if neutered and vaccinated dogs are not released at the places from which they had been picked up. Also, stray dogs that are familiar with their surroundings, know who is a friend and who is not, what spells danger, places where food and shelter are available, and have referral households that support them, are at peace with their environment. In contrast, stray dogs moving into a new area are often aggressive because they are under attack from local dogs, cannot distinguish between friend and foe, do not know where they can find food and shelter and are hence always on the edge. The ABC programme lowers canine aggression levels. Since sterilised bitches do not come on heat, fights among dogs over bitches, which makes them more aggressive, do not occur during mating seasons when they are most frequent. This drastically reduces the number of instances in which a higher level of aggression leads to a greater intolerance of provocation and biting of people. Also, since sterilised bitches do not litter, there is no rise in their aggression level that occurs when they are guarding their puppies against threatswhich are many, given the way in which humans treat animals. In the Technical Report Series 931, WHO's Expert Consultation on Rabies, which met in Geneva in October 2004, states: "Since the 1960s, ABC programmes coupled with rabies vaccination have been advocated as a method to control urban street male and female dog populations and ultimately human rabies in Asia." Not surprisingly, the Guidelines for Dog Population Management, says, "Removal [including putting in shelters] and killing of dogs should never be considered as the most effective way of dealing with the problem of surplus dogs in the community: It has no effect on the root cause of the problem, which is over-production of dogs". Besides, while sterilisation involves only a one-time expenditure on surgery and hospitalisation, shelters would involve ongoing expenditure on feeding and maintenance of thousands of dogs, which will be mind-boggling. Besides, their establishment will violate the ABC (Dog) Rules which are a part of the law of the land.

ULFAs strength has declined: Gogoi

GUWAHATI, JULY 27: With the ULFA observing its annual martyrs day on Saturday in Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the strength of the insurgents has declined and the security forces have foiled many of their attempts. Today is their shaheed divas and so they are trying their best to make their presence felt. We are resilient and the security forces have foiled many attempts, Mr. Gogoi said. However, some incidents have occurred and we are very serious about this, Mr. Gogoi told reporters here referring to the grenade blasts in the state this week. ULFAs strength has come down a lot. When I took charge in 2001, about 400 people were killed a year by them. It is only around 10 deaths so far this year, Mr. Gogoi said. Stating that the government has alerted all districts to keep a strict vigil, he accused the banned outfit of getting help from more than one country to destabilise peace and development in the state. Best is yet to come in agricultural sector: PM

NEW DELHI, JULY 27: Amid concerns over inflation in agricultural items, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday sought suggestions from economic experts for a solution as he asserted that the best is yet to come in the sector. The issue came up during an interaction Dr. Singh had with members of the prestigious National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) Centre where he was told by some of them that inflation was a result of farming cost which has gone up by 20 per cent in the last 4-5 years on account of MNREGA and regular hike in MSP, sources said. The meeting with members of the NCAER, an institute with which Dr. Singh was associated for about six years from 1976, saw a detailed discussion on the agriculture sector amid concerns over rising prices of the farm produce. Dr. Singh made it clear that the government had to undertake the programmes, like MNREGA, and raise MSP to empower people at the lowest strata of the society. He asked the economists to suggest solutions to bring down prices while keeping this aspect in mind as he contended that the best is yet to come in the sector. Sources noted that due to schemes like rural job guarantee programme and hikes in MSP, the per capita income in rural areas has shown a substantial improvement. In his address to NCAER members, the Prime Minister said the purpose of the study of economics is not to provide settled answers to unsettled and difficult questions, but sometimes to warn economists and the world-at-large, how not to be misled by clever governments

2G case: Summons issued to Anil, wife

NEW DELHI, JULY 27: A Delhi court on Saturday issued fresh summons to Reliance ADA Group Chairman Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani to appear as prosecution witnesses before it next month in the 2G spectrum allocation case. While Mr. Anil has been summoned on August 22, Ms. Tina has been asked to appear before the court on August 23. According to court sources, special CBI judge O.P. Saini has taken on record the list of witnesses to be called for recording of evidence submitted by the agency and issued fresh summons to them. Besides Mr. Anil and Ms. Tina Ambani, the CBI has given the names of Reliance Energy Ltd officials Anita Gokhale and Kamalkant Gupta, CFSL experts Deepak R Handa and Vijay Verma and also a metropolitan magistrate. The court had on July 19 allowed CBIs plea to make Mr. Anil and Ms. Tina Ambani prosecution witness in the case as their testimonies may throw light on alleged investment of over Rs. 990 crore by his group companies in Swan Telecom, facing trial in the case along with its promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka. It had said CBIs plea to summon Mr. Ambani, his wife and 11 others as prosecution witnesses was essential for arriving at a just decision in the case. The court issued the fresh summons to the couple after Ambani, who was scheduled to depose before it on July 26, had sought exemption from personal appearance on the ground that he has prescheduled business engagements.He had said that he received the summon on July 23 and owing to extremely short notice of just two days, it would not be possible for him to appear before it and he would appear before the court any day after August 15.On July 25, the Supreme Court had refused to grant an urgent hearing on the plea of Reliance Telecom Ltd (RTL), an accused in the case, challenging the trial courts order summoning Mr. Anil and Ms. Tina as prosecution witnesses in the case. The apex court has posted RTLs application for hearing on Monday before a special bench, comprising justices Singhvi and K.S. Radhakrishnan, which is hearing all the matters pertaining to the 2G scam.

Opposition was uncooperative and it forced us to pass an ordinance, he said. The Bill will be taken up in Parliament in the coming monsoon session.

Lanco Infratech announces restruc- Woman journalist verbally turing of debt worth Rs. 7500 crore abused in Guwahati
NEW DELHI, JULY 27: With the economic slowdown and adverse conditions in the power sector impacting its business, Lanco Infratech on Saturday announced its decision to restructure Rs. 7500 crore worth of debt. In a statement issued here by the Lanco Infratech senior vice president, A. Narasimhan, the company said the debt recast consists of Rs. 3,200 crore of fundbased borrowings such as short-term loans and Rs. 4,300 crore of non-fund based debt such as bank guarantees. The company in a regulatory filing with the National Stock Exchange said Lanco Infratech, the holding company of the group that has interests in power, natural resources and infrastructure, has initiated the process of corporate debt restructuring (CDR) as per Reserve Bank of India guidelines. The CDR would be only for Lanco Infratech and not for any of its subsidiaries. Lanco group's net debt touched Rs. 33,593.5 crore at the end of March 2013. Prevailing economic conditions have adversely impacted the performance of the infrastructure sector and more specifically, the power sector. Pending dues from discoms is close to Rs. 3,000 crore. Besides, there are problems due to inadequate fuel supplies and rupee depreciation, among others, the statement said. GUWAHATI: A television journalist has alleged that she was subjected to verbal abuse at a public place by a motorcycle-borne youth while she was on her way to an assignment. The city-based journalist, who works for 'Aajtak' channel, on Saturday said the incident occurred on Thursday and she has lodged a complaint in Dispur police station in this regard. The unfortunate incident happened to me while I was on way to attend a press conference. A motorcycle-borne youth zoomed in front of my vehicle and was about to ram into it, but my husband who was driving the car somehow stopped the car, averting a possible collision." The youth then stopped his two-wheeler in front of the car and allegedly charged towards her in an 'aggressive way' and attempted to intimidate her with abusive words. "He infringed my modesty at a public place with foul languages and gestures," the journalist said. The youth had even snatched the keys of the journalist's vehicle and as the situation threatened to get out of control, she called up the police for help but they allegedly arrived late. "If a lady reporter can be humiliated, abused and intimidated in daylight in the centre of the city and the police arrive late, one can well understand the fate of women moving on the streets of Guwahati," she said. When contacted the police confirmed receipt of the complaint and said none was arrested so far. Investigation in the incident was on. TN BJP seeks greater protection for Sangh leaders

CHENNAI, JULY 27 : The BJP workers on Saturday appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for greater security for Hindu leaders given the cases of murders of senior Sangh Parivar functionaries in the state. We are not sure how many more (alleged killers) are there and whether they are (acting) in groups or not. We appeal to the CM to strengthen the police protection given to Hindu leaders, state BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan told reporters in Chennai. The BJP state general secretary V. Ramesh, alias Auditor Ramesh, was murdered in Salem earlier this month. The Hindu Munnani state president Vellaiyappan was among a series of Hindu leaders either killed or attacked in the past one year, party officials said. Ms. Jayalalithaa had announced the formation of a Special Investigation Division under Crime Branch-CID to look into the killings of the above two leaders. Describing as unfortunate DGP K Ramanujams statement yesterday that not all murders or attacks had a communal motive, Radhakrishnan said the former was just repeating the reports filed by local inspectors. Meanwhile, a report from Salem said CB-CID DGP Narendra Pal Singh has reviewed the probe into the Ramesh murder case with police officials. The meeting, attended by, among others, CB-CID IGP Manjunatha and S.P. Anbu, lasted three hours. Manjunatha told reporters after the meeting that those behind the attacks on the leaders would be caught soon.

Maruti to foray into LCV segment

NEW DELHI, JULY 27 : Countrys largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India on Saturday said it will foray into the light commercial vehicles (LCVs) segment and the first model may be launched in two years time. MSI had initially planned to enter the segment nearly 30 years back. However, the plan was dropped due to poor demand for such vehicles at the time. "It was planned in our original agreement (with SMC) in 1982 that the Carry LCV would be launched in India but at that time, due to poor response from the market, it was shelved, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Chairman R.C. Bhargava told reporters here. The company had received only 2,000 booking for the vehicle. He, however, added that the situation has changed now and the board has given approval to go ahead with the launch of LCV in India. "In the last two years, we have seen a demand for such LCVs growing in India and we think we can offer a superior product in the segment as Suzuki has been doing for years globally," Mr. Bhargava said.

Teach children to respect their parents, develop sanskar: Meira Kumar

SASARAM (BIHAR): Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday lamented poor implementation of law for elders which provides for three months jail term if children do not look after old parents and stressed on sensitising children at school level itself to develop "sanskar" (tradition) in them."The law for elders is not implemented properly which is creating problems in the society," Kumar, who is Congress Lok Sabha member from Sasaram in Bihar, told reporters. The law was enacted in 2007 when Kumar was Union minister for Social Justice and Empowerment. The Lok Sabha Speaker was here to participate in an Iftar party in her constituency. She emphasised on sensitising the younger ones in school itself to develop the "sanskar" of respecting elder parents. Kumar suggested regular interaction in schools between children and elders as part of sensitisation programme.

When launched, the vehicle will be in the same segment as Tata Motor's Ace, which is at present the leader in the segment. It will be developed on the platform of parent. Suzuki Motor Corp (SMC)'s Carry, an LCV that is sold in markets such as China, Indonesia and Pakistan.

Mr. Bhargava said MSI has not decided on the name of the LCV, which will available in both CNG and diesel variants. "Our engineers are working on adapting the diesel engine that we have licensed from Fiat to be used in the LCV. This will be a pure goods carrier," he said.

Chandy rejects TV report, asks media to introspect

TH IRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 27: Terming as totally wrong reports that a Minister in his cabinet had sought to interfere in the solar scam probe, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Saturday said legal action would be taken against the television channel which carried the story based on a sting operation. It (the story) is totally wrong. Legal action will be taken against the channel. The channel authorities should come out and explain their sting operation. Other media should also make clear their stand on issues like this, he said. Speaking at a function at Kollam, Mr. Chandy said the Malayalam TV channel story which aired telephonic talk purportedly made by Tourism the channel authorities to come clean on the matter. He charged that the channel did not carry the entire conversation of the sting operation. Certain portions of the talk were taken out and presented, he said. Mr. Chandy said the government fully respected the freedom of the press, but everybody should introspect if all limits could be crossed in the name of freedom. The channel had on Friday reported that attempts had been made to spare some Congress leaders names from a complaint to be submitted to the court by the key accused Saritha Nair. In this context, the channel had aired the sound track of a telephone conversation purportedly made by the minister and a middleman.

Singh, facing charges of criminal defamation, on Saturday earned the ire of a magistrate in New Delhi after the retired Generals counsel asked him to recuse himself during hearing in the case and was warned of action over the conduct. Do not tell me when I should recuse or not. You will not tell this to me. I can take cognisance... Do not say like this in the court. Just because I do not say anything or do not put my foot down on the matter, it does not mean that you will take me for granted. Do not take advantage of my leniency, Metropolitan Magistrate Jay Thareja told V.K. Singhs counsel. The magistrate also told the former Army Chief, who appeared before him in pursuance to the bailable warrants issued against him for his failure to appear before the court earlier, that if his lawyer Vishwajeet Singh would show such conduct, then he may not be liberal to him. Mr Singh, I have been very liberal on this case. This is a normal case for me. But is this the conduct of your lawyer? He had not appeared before me on the last date...I am afraid I will not be liberal, Magistrate Thareja said. During the hearing, advocate Anil Aggarwal, appearing for complainant Lt Gen (Retd) Tejinder Singh, moved two applications seeking cancellation of bail granted to V.K. Singh and cancellation of exemption granted to other four persons, against whom he had filed the defamation case.

20 Goa students ill after eating mid-day meal

PANAJI: Twenty students of a secondary school in Goa were on Saturday admitted to a hospital when they started to vomit after eating the mid-day meal. The students said they saw a dead spider in the food, an official said. The incident occurred in Kamleshwar School in Pernem, 25 km from here. "The children are in hospital and their condition is stable," the education department official said. The incident comes less than two weeks after 23 school children in Bihar's Saran district died after eating contaminated food. On July 19, 20 primary school students were admitted to hospital after some of them fell ill after a midday meal at a school in Ponda in eastern Goa. Students of a school in Canacona in south Goa were hospitalised June 23 after eating mid-day meal.

16-year girl raped in Haryana

JIND: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at Singhana village here, police said on Saturday. Ramesh, a resident of Singhana village, forcibly took the girl to a secluded location and raped her last night, they said. A case has been registered and a manhunt launched to arrested the accused at the earliest, according to police.

KOLKATA, JULY 27: The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) two-member internal probe panel, comprising former judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramanian, has submitted its report on the IPL spot-fixing scandal on Saturday. The committee, according to reports, has cleared sidelined BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan of betting charges but no BCCI official was willing to speak on the issue. ACSU's report on BPL expected after Eid holidays

BANGLADESH , JULY 27: The Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to submit its report on the alleged corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, which would mean any day after August 12. According to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, the report will be ready within the next nine days. He also hinted that two other players, who have been mentioned extensively in Bangladeshi newspapers ever since Mohammad Ashraful confessed to the ACSU investigative officers, could be implicated in the BPL corruption charges. "I understand that the report will be completed by August 5," Hassan said. "They [ACSU] wanted to submit it on August 8 or 9, but we asked them to come just after Eid, on August 12 or 13. Whatever names I have read in the paper that is what I have been hearing unofficially. I haven't heard of anyone of Ashraful's stature [being implicated]." Hassan also suggested that the ACSU could be lenient towards Ashraful because of his confession and help during the investigation. "Just like all the other cricket boards and the ICC, we also firmly believe in zero tolerance towards match-fixing. Because Ashraful has admitted to his involvement and helped the ACSU, he may get some benefit. This is strictly my opinion, I am not sure if that is what the ACSU will do." Ashraful has found sympathy from sections of the public, especially after he apologized in the media last month. Among his team-mates there has been a mixture of pity and commonsense, with Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim asking for exemplary punishment.

NEW DELHI, JULY 27: Punjab will take on Uttar Pradesh in the final of the Alchemist IHF Federation Cup hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Sunday. While UP rode on vice-captain Diwakar Ram's (22nd, 39th, 42nd minutes) hattrick to beat Karnataka 5-2 in the first semifinal, Punjab spanked Tamil Nadu 5-1 in the second last four match.
