EDL not welcome in Tower Hamlets Support Unite Against Fascism

Please pass this motion if your trade union branch or community group would like to support the Unite Against Fascism demonstration against the racist English Defence League (EDL) on 7 September.

This union/organisation notes:

1) That the racist English Defence League plans to demonstrate in Tower Hamlets on Saturday 7 September 2013. The EDL is a group which terrorises people from ethnic and religious minorities across Britain, specically targeting Muslims. 2) That since the murder of Lee Rigby in May 2013, the EDL has sought to stir up racial tensions in communities across the UK. 3) That a number of attacks have taken place against mosques since Lee Rigbys murder. In Muswell Hill a mosque and community centre was burnt to the ground and EDL was found painted on the walls. In July, three mosques in the West Midlands were subjected to bomb attacks. There have also been a number of attacks on the trade union and student movements, this has included intimidation at Unite the unions regional ofces in Ipswich and Merseyside, and an assault on Occupy London Stock Exchange. 4) That Unite Against Fascism have called a counter-demonstration, which aims to bring trade unions and communities together to stop the EDL in Tower Hamlets. The East End of London has a proud anti-fascist legacy and previous attempts by the EDL to march have been met with opposition.
