1 Answer all the questions.

1.

Chris and Joe are brothers. They have the same parents.

Microsoft

(a)

Chris and Joe look different from each other. Choose the best explanation for this. Put a tick (9) in the correct box. They are twins.

They have different combinations of alleles.

They are both boys.

[1] (b) Complete the following sentences about the inheritance of ear shape. Choose from this list.

a gene

a protein

chromosomes

a cell

recessive

Ear shape is determined by .....................................................

with two different alleles.

One allele is dominant, the other is ........................................ .

The alleles are carried by ................................................

inside the nucleus. [3] [Total: 4]

2.

Gardeners often make new plants by taking cuttings from a plant that they already have. Each cutting grows into a new plant identical in appearance to the original plant. The new plants are clones of the original plant. Which of these statements explain why the new plants are identical to the original plant. Put a tick (9) in the box next to the best answer.

Each new plant has been given identical fertiliser to the original plant.

Each new plant has been grown in identical soil to the original plant.

Each new plant has identical genes to the original plant. [1]

(b)

It is possible to make clones of humans. Put a tick (9) in the box next to a process that could produce human clones.

A fertilised egg splits into two.

Two eggs are released at the same time and both are fertilised.

An egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body and the embryo is returned to the mothers womb. [1]

Specimen Paper: Science A

(c)

Human embryos could be made from cloning. They could then be used to supply stem cells. These stem cells could be used to treat illnesses. Five people were asked if they thought cloning of human embryos to make stem cells should be allowed.

Kate John Reshma Lucy Gary

I am not against cloning, but I dont want this to be allowed. It will be difficult to stop someone producing a cloned baby. Thousands of people suffer from these diseases and could be helped. An embryo is not a person and many embryos die naturally anyway. A human embryo is a person and has the same rights as an adult. Killing a human embryo lowers the value of life.

These people have different views about cloning embryos to make stem cells. Which people agree and which people disagree? Write the names of the people in the correct columns in the table. people who agree with cloning of embryos to make stem cells people who disagree with cloning of embryos to make stem cells

3.

Greg and Anita are expecting a baby. Anita has a test to check the baby. The test takes fluid from around the developing baby (fetus). The fluid contains skin cells from the fetus. The cells are specially treated to show their chromosomes. The chromosomes look like this.

Use information from the diagrams to help you with your answers.

(a)

How many chromosomes are present? [1]

(b)

Which pair of chromosomes tells Anita that the baby will be a boy?...............................[1]

(c)

Which human sex cell carries a Y chromosome? Put a tick (9) in the correct box.

egg cell

sperm cell

either egg or sperm cell [1]

Specimen Paper: Science A

(d)

When he grows up the baby will not look exactly like Greg. Which of these statements explains why? Put a tick (9) in the two correct boxes.

The babys appearance may be changed by environmental factors.

The babys genes may only have alleles from Anita.

The babys genes will have some alleles from Anita and some alleles from Greg.

The alleles in the babys genes may change after it is born. [2] [Total: 5]

Some students used a detector to compare the air in the city centre with air in the school playground.

The detector measures how much carbon monoxide there is in a sample of air. Each student took one measurement in each place. Here are the results from the five students. Amount of carbon monoxide in the air student A B C D E city centre 67 71 33 64 70 school playground 61 63 65 62 64

(a)

(i)

One student did not use the meter properly in the city centre.

Which student was this?

.......................................................................[1]

(ii)

The students calculated the average of the other four results from the city centre like this: average = total of results/number of results = 272/4 = 68 Why did the students calculate an average? Put a tick (9) in each of the two correct boxes. To obtain a more reliable value.

To get a more accurate value.

To make it a fair test.

To overcome small variations in the samples.

9 6. Power stations may use different fuels to produce electricity.

(a)

One power station burns natural gas. Natural gas contains methane. Methane contains only hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms. What is the name given to chemicals that contain only hydrogen atoms and carbon atoms?

........................................................................................................................................[1]

(b)

When natural gas is burned, two main products are made. Write the name of one of these two products.

........................................................................................................................................[1]

(c)

Another power station burns coal. Coal contains mostly carbon. It burns in a plentiful supply of air to form carbon dioxide, which enters the atmosphere.

(i)

The diagram shows the reaction between carbon and oxygen. Finish the diagram to show what is produced in this reaction.

[1] (ii) Which of these processes removes some of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Put a ring around the correct answer.

combustion

10 (d) The coal burned in power station B contains sulfur compounds. When these sulfur compounds burn a pollutant gas is released into the air. (i) What is the name of this pollutant gas?

...............................................................................................................................[1]

(ii)

Why is the release of this gas a problem? Put a tick (9) in each of the two correct boxes. It dissolves to make rain alkaline.

It dissolves to make rain acidic.

It makes the bricks of buildings dirty.

It corrodes the bricks of buildings. [2] [Total: 7]

13 9. This question is about the possible cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. One theory suggests that an asteroid hitting the Earth caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. A student makes these notes about the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Rocks younger than 65 million years do not contain dinosaur fossils. 65 million years ago dinosaurs died out. Rocks from 65 million years ago show unusually high amounts of iridium. Iridium is found in asteroids and in material from volcanoes. An asteroid hit the Earth 65 million years ago. An asteroid hitting the Earth caused the dinosaurs to become extinct.

Some of these statements are data and one of the statements is a possible explanation. Put a D next to three statements that are data. Put an E next to one statement that is an explanation. [4] [Total: 4]
