Boomers benefit from hearing aids as they stay in the workforce longer
Lets face it. The Great Recession put a kink in many Americans retirement plans. Combine that financial blow with the general uncertainty regarding Medicare and future cost of private health insurance. As a result, more boomers are staying the workforce longer. So what does this mean for individuals? Along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, its important that boomers routinely get their hearing checked-and that they address any hearing loss so it doesnt undermine their efforts on the job or their quality of life. Maturing workers should be getting their hearing checked. And if there is hearing loss they should discuss with their hearing healthcare provider whether or not hearing aids could help. When people with even mild hearing loss use hearing aids, they improve their job performance, increase their earning potential, enhance their communication skills and improve their professional relationships. I urge anyone planning to stay in the workforce longer to take that first most critical step to optimizing your hearing health and enhancing your chances for career success by taking a hearing test. Your hearing health and continued job success are within your control.

Open houses benefit buyers and sellers

(NAPSI)The next time youre thinking about buying or selling a house, you might want to open your mind to the benefits of an open house. What Buyers Should Do Buyers should make the most of each open house they visit and remember to keep an open mind. Here are some tips for visiting open houses: Check everything in the house including appliances, the size of closets, storage areas and the views from the windows. Walk around the property and check such things as the brick and mortar and siding. Drive around the neighborhood and get a feel for the area. Talk to the Realtor hosting the open house and pick his or her brain about the condition of the home, recent upgrades and the neighborhood. What Sellers Should Do As a seller, an open house is about putting your homes best foot forward. Here are some tips for a successful open house: Declutter and clean the house. Replace burnt-out lightbulbs and wash the windows. Mow the front lawn and clean the walkway. Fix maintenance issues such as dings in walls or leaky faucets. Two More Things To Consider 1. Last year, 45 percent of all buyers used an open house as a resource in their home search process, according to the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Open houses are a way for buyers to get an idea of what they can afford and what is available in their market. For sellers, its a chance to market the home and attract potential buyers. 2. Whether you are buying or selling, working with a Realtor is key. Some 89 percent of buyers purchase their homes through a real estate agent. Only 9 percent of sellers sold their home without assistance from an agent. Realtors have invaluable insights into what sells a home and are the most trusted resource for real estate information. They know what buyers value in their local markets. They can help sellers protect their investment and buyers build theirs.

Dont let hearing loss affect your bond with grandchildren

(NewsUSA)Grandparents and grandchildren have much to learn from one another, and such valuable relationships should be cultivated. Oxford University research has shown that involved grandparents contribute significantly to better-adjusted grandchildren. The research suggests that children find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. The grandparental bond is built on communication. In fact, most children studied did not identify distance as an important factor if communication was strong. Unfortunately, hearing loss is the number-one challenge to communication. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), age and hearing loss are strongly related30 percent of seniors from 65 to 74 years old suffer from a hearing disability. For adults 75 years of age or older, hearing loss jumps to 47 percent. "It doesn't take a PhD for my patients to understand the many costs of hearing loss," says Sreek Cherukuri, MD, a certified ear, nose and throat physician based in Chicago, Ill. Beyond emotional well-being, even something simple like taking the grandkids to the pool can turn dangerous if grandma can't hear possible cries for help. Driving puts the children at risk if the grandparents cannot hear oncoming traffic or car horns. The NIDCD reports that only one out of every five people who needs a hearing aid actually wears one. This is largely due to the extravagant cost of most hearing aids. "I found that I saw too many patients with hearing loss going home without a solution because they couldn't afford hearing aid prices," says Dr. Cherukuri. Cherukuri's response was to develop inexpensive but effective hearing aids. "With today's technology, a quality hearing aid shouldn't cost more than a digital camera or iPod," Cherukuri says. MDHearingAid, found at www.mdhearingaid.com, isn't just a reliable source for affordable hearing aids, it's also a good source for expert consumer information. "You should see a physician and get the best hearing aid you can afford. We offer an excellent choice for those who cannot afford a custom hearing aid." Seniors should enjoy the benefits of their ripe age. This includes plenty of quality time with grandchildren.

Karls Country Market takes home four awards from national competition
BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
Karls Country Market brought home four awardsfor their bacon, wieners, cheddarwurst and summer sausagefrom the American Cured Meat Championships held in South Carolina in July. While a huge honor, the stores success at the annual national show for meat processors has become standard fare for the 50year-old business that has won more than 200 awards in the last 28 years. Weve been competing since 1985 and have won something every year, said second-generation owner Paul Koslowski whose father Karl came from Germany to open the market. Were pretty serious when it comes to competition. Indeed, as this particular competition generally has more than 600 entries in 20 different categories, with judges making their selections based on appearance, flavor and aroma on a 1,000-point scale. Competing at these levels is a good measuring stick as to how your product compares to that of other meat processors, Koslowski noted. With around 100 varieties of fresh meat and championship sausages (including gluten-free selections) in their full-service meat department, Karls also entersand winsinternational contests as well. When youre coming home with gold medals from a competition in Germany that includes 150 countries, you know youre doing something right, Koslowski said. We pride ourselves on doing things the old-fashioned way. Everything we make here is on a smaller scale so the customer can be assured of a fresh product. With many loyal customers, the full-line grocery store also features a variety of imported foods, a fresh produce department, an expansive liquor selection that includes German beers and daily fresh bakery. But it is the meat that has people lining up at the butchers counter. It all starts with the ingredients, explained Koslowski. We use the best meats availablewithout fillers or preservativesand the best spices we can get our hands on, and that is reflected in the products we sell and the awards we win. The market is located at W156 N5645 Pilgrim Road, at the intersection of Pilgrim Road and Silver Spring Drive, in Menomonee Falls, and can be reached at (262) 252-3090. Business hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, and the meat department is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The store also features a brat fry in front of the building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Plan Commission to review redevelopment proposal

A public hearing will be held before the Menomonee Falls Plan Commission Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. to consider amending an Infill Zoning Overlay District. The request is related to the redevelopment of two parcels of land north of the Appleton Avenue fire station and south of Main Street. The Plan Commission meeting will be held at Menomonee Falls Village Hall, W156 N8440 Pilgrim Rd. According to a village staff report, a new comprehensive strategy for the parcels that is being developed by Brayton Devco LLC calls for the rehabilitation of a single story commercial building at N88 W16683 Appleton Ave., getting a new tenant for space at N88 W16653 Appleton Ave. and creating a public parking lot. In June the Architectural Control Board approved a facade renovation plan for the W16683 Appleton Ave. property to accommodate Just Kiln' Time, which is planning to move from another location. The staff report states that the Pink Lemonade salon is also proposing to relocate to the W16653 Appleton Ave. space from another location. The request for a conditional use permit to allow Pink Lemonade to move into the space is on the commission agenda later in the evening. "The non-conforming, deteriorated twostory duplex between the new Just Kiln Time and Pink Lemonade spaces is planned for removal and the three separate parking lots to the rear of all the subject buildings would be reconfigured and constructed into a single, 40-stall public parking lot. The public parking lot would work for the benefit all the immediately adjacent businesses as well as act as additional public parking for those visiting the downtown area," the staff report states. A three lot certified survey map is proposed that would separate the parking lot and pedestrian walkway from the two businesses. Brayton Devco is requesting "relaxation" of underlying zoning in exchange for a higher level of architectural design. Also on the agenda for the commission meeting is a request for a Planned Residential Development (PRD) zoning for land east of Town Line Road and south of the Union Pacific railroad tracks. An an application has been submitted calling for 127 single family lots and 12 duplex lots. By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and she started wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lower bone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless. She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and when she leaves it out her lower denture bounces like a basketball when trying to eat. She can only drink her food now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Any suggestions? Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. I would need to see her existing denture to evaluate the bite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make sure it is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. When people have no bone left a soft silicone liner may help to increase the hold of the lower denture and provide more comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissue conditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting and chewing can be improved prior to making her a new set of dentures. That way she can see if we can help her before undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures. Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants to stabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as we can place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. These would greatly help keep the dentures in place and prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website. Dear Dr. Winter, I am a male that has suffered from bulimia for many years since high school wrestling made me constantly drop weight for my matches. I am afraid I have permanently damaged my teeth and my front teeth are chipping and thin. What do you suggest I do to prevent further tooth destruction and reverse the damage I have done? I am free from purging for over two years and now its time to fix myself. Dear Steve, I applaud you for your courageous battle with a most troubling and debilitating illness. I also appreciate bringing this illness to the attention of fellow men, as this disease doesnt just affect women. Bulimia or binging and purging are a subset of Anorexia and the acid reflux effects of purging can cause damage

The Sussex Cardinals headed into the final week of regular season play on top of the Land O'Lakes West Division standings. The Cardinals rallied to beat the Brookfield Blue Sox July 28, 8-7. Sussex was trailing 4-1 heading into the seventh inning when it scored seven runs. Afterward, Sussex had a 14-3 record while the Pewaukee Muskies who split a doubleheader at Menomonee Falls July 28 had a 13-4 record Sussex will end the regular season against the Brookfield Bulldogs at McCoy Field in Brookfield at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. The Muskies will finish the season at Monches at

2 p.m. Aug. 3. Menomonee Falls was fourth in the division with an 11-6 record following the doubleheader with Pewaukee. Menomonee Falls lost the opener 8-0 but turned the tables with an 11-0 win a few hours later. Menomonee Falls will finish the season at Merton at 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Lannon was ninth with a 7-9 record following a 15-2 loss to the Brookfield Bulldogs July 21. Lannon will finish the season hosting the Brookfield Blue Sox at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 and then hosting the West Bend 7 Up at 1 p.m. the next day.

to enamel of teeth. I would need to see how much enamel is gone to discuss treatment options. I will evaluate your remaining enamel, your level of sensitivity and your bite to determine if you require crowns, orthodontics or perhaps only some conservative fillings. It is important to realize that one major problem of acid erosion is that as the teeth wear and get thin, the opposing teeth super-erupt and move up onto the worn area. So treating bulimia is not just about the thinning worn teeth but the new position of the opposing teeth. You can see examples of bulimia treatment on www.winterdental.com We welcome our readers to call us at 414-464-9021 for a comprehensive new patient appointment or a consultation visit.
