This image depicts the story of the rain animal in Khoi-San folklaw. The Khoisan although where nomads, also used to stay in caves for long periods of time. They looked to the environment to supply them with food and water for survival. In winter the grass would dry up and the animals would move off. This posed a potential threat to their life style. The tribe would get together and clap, sing and celebrate as one during the "trance-dance" ritual. They would all dance round the fire or clap their hands sitting down. The shaman would enter trance and in the mist of the spirit realm, call the elusive rain animal. He would tie a string (filled with energy and muti) around the animals nose and lead it to the area of the land he needed it to rain. He would literally depict the landscape he knew and release the rain animal. Once back in his body the tribe would celebrate if sucessful. Then they would wait, a few days later it would rain. This would bring the animals to their valley again. I have depicted the rain animal as a giraffe, for me a breacher of realms, an archangel. He comes through the clouds and spirit realm breaching the boundaries of magic. Magic spills around him as he pours his sacred, life-giving rain onto the earth. Many symbols of potent magic are shown in the work. The landscape is alive with detail. Three

This image is from an exhibition called the "Last Rights". This specific piece was the centre-point that the rest of the show complemented. The tradition of "last rights" in this specific sense goes back to Medieval times where Knights swore firstly to their King/Queen and Country. They where asked to protect realms in the Kingdom. Sometimes marauding armies would come and the knights, knowing they would be killed, would ride out in their regalia to "sacrifice themselves" for their faith and to allow the townsfolk they where protecting enough time to run to safety. They sacrificed themselves to save many. Before they rode out, the villages would throw flowers onto the ground in honour of their deeds. This rite was called the "last rights". I have depicted this story with a white lion, the symbol of purity and legend in African fables. He walks with pride willing to sacrifice himself first, he is "the king of beasts". He does this to hopefully show humankind that we need to stop our ways or many other beings, just as beautiful, will follow if there is no intervention. Lilies are tumbling through the air, thrown from beings we cannot see. They are symbolic of purity and strength. They too are indigenous to Southern Africa.

The image shows an eland riding a leaf, surrounded by animals. The work reflects the ancient legend of the romans where Chiro (the eland), rides on the river Styx. He is eternal, neither living nor dead but ferries the souls who have died from the realm of the living to the realm of the dead. The eland is the most sacred animal to the Khoi-San (who reside in Southern Africa). They almost look to it as their God. Everything about him is sacred. He rides an ancient boat, made from the wood of a Stinkwood tree, indigenous to Southern Africa. It is old and withered but will continue to float along the river. Behind the eland are all the animals, birds, reptiles, some fish and mammals in the South African Red Data Books as being either vulnerable, rare, endangered or threatened. The image is a warning to the human world that if we do not intervene these animals will indeed be "crossing over" into the realm of spirits where so much of the magic and mystery of the Khoi-San reside. The image is specifically dark to add emphasis, like a spot-light, to the eland and the animals surrounding it. He leads the way for others to follow.

When you enter a state of trance your body enters this state in a few ways. One way is to mimic the "dying" process of an animal which has been hit with an arrow with the Khoi-Sans poison. The animal lowers its head, starts to salivate, bends its back and drags its back legs. It also starts to sweat and eventually falls to its knees and dies. The Khoi-san sometimes, when entering the trance state mimmic this "dying" process. They too lower their heads, bleed and salivate, sweat profusely and hunch over, finally dragging their feet and collapse. When they collapse, they enter the trance state. In this image the rhino is greeting you. It is an animal I hold very sacred to me. It represents for me the world or "Mother Earth". When I see how many rhinos are being killed I look at humans and believe when the last rhino falls, we've killed the earth. I have created many images of rhinos in my work, they for me, hold the sacred feminine or earth. Will we ask one day "What did rhinos look like?" I also look at the rhino as being partly connected to us, if the "Earth" dies, so too does man. If we continue this slaughter, in this regard, the rhino will not be able to assist us in our spiritual growth. In this image the rhino again protects you, (are we protecting them)? The background arches towards the heavens, creating a mountain of a

A crane spreads its wings, in a courtship display, looking on at the viewer. Light filters onto her, allowing her to be bathed and blessed from source. A halo of light connects her to her surroundings. The background, like all images in the trance-dance series is filled with information. The more you look, the more you see. No negative space is in the background. Like our dreams, the environment shifts and changes. The landscape alters into forms. The horizon-line bends to the will of source. Therianthropes (half-animal, half-people) assist the Crowned crane in the trancedance". A shaman above the crane's head is connected to source through the string of light. We all aim to get to that point of one-ness. The crane dances with the viewer, inviting you to become and take part in the trance-dance experience. Will you?

In this image you are shown an eland, the most sacred animal to the Khoi-San. It looks on at the viewer, around him, like spirits or beings from another realm which are Khoi-San shaman interacting with the animal. The landscape tilts, like a dream. In the background the positive and negative shapes all show something, be it animals, humans or images from their cave paintings. This image shows one experience of their trance-dance. When a shaman enters a trance, the way he depicts and interacts with the spirit world is different, but there can be 5 different experiences. They are, flying, swimming, conflict (where you have to fight something in order to judge if you are worthy of entering the realm), experiencing death, or feeling energy course through your body. This image reflects the aspect in all of those trance states. Here, in the spirit realm you are confronted with this being of sacred power and immense beauty. To a Khoi-San it would be like witnessing god. What you do and experience in this interaction is up to you. Allow your mind to open up to the experience and witness how you feel being in the presence of such an awesome being.

A kudu, a being of spiritual significance, looks out at the viewer, a being who has come to guide you in your trance experience. Its horns, for me, represent connection to source, spiralling up to the heavens. A halo is shown between its horns, signifying a portal to other realms within this realm. Again, the landscape moves and tilts as the spiritual realm behaves in different ways to our own. Again, shaman drift around the animal, either assisting it or supporting it in its progress through the realm. This being waits as you gain insight and reflect as images drift in front of your eyes. In any trance experience some being or animal will assist you as your story/experience is revealed to you. Sacred Kudu looks on towards you, protecting you as your dreams unwind and evolve. The more you look at the background, the more will be revealed to you.

The element of water is very connected to the realm of dreams of spirits. Here anything can happen. The animal coming to assist you is a crocodile, a being able to move both on land and in water. It is more graceful in water, meaning it is more at home in the spirit realm. The title of the work encourages you to look not at the crocodile, but at the fish: creatures who can only move in one realm, this realm being the dream state. Here they have come to assist the crocodile and you. The title senses that indeed in this realm, you might be new to it and literally "a fish out of water". They will assist you as you learn how to "swim" in this new spiritual realm. Crocodile looks on either protecting you with mouth open or basking in radiant light... what he is doing, is up to the viewer to decide. The background is filled with images and icons, revealing themselves to any who choose to see them. Although it might looks like it, there is no negative space in this image. It is an optical illusion, everything is a positive form. A sense of an iconographic shape is positioned in the top right corner of the image... a sun.... a symbol from our unconscious. You decide.

Ourborous, the world snake found both in European and African mythology wraps itself around celestial objects. It holds its tail in its mouth. If you where to bend the paper, it would form a cylinder where both tails meet and so join the circuit. Great detail has been placed on this ancient snake who ripples with patterns and scales as it stretches across time and space. Ourborous is a hermaphrodite, being able to create at will if it chooses. Legend states that once the planet was created it came onto its surface and created the mountains and rivers which we know. Ourborous then went into the core of the earth, each time there is a landscape or rockslide, it is Ourborous moving deep within the earth. The 3 circles can represent planetary bodies but we also know of the universal law "as above, so below". These same 3 spheres can symbolise our smallest particles, atoms, neutrons and quarks. The "space" is filled with animals, a complex task of figuring out the positive and negative relationships between the lines and shapes resemble animals.
