What are artificial ingredients?

The term artificial refers to compounds being caused or produced by a human and especially social or political agency; lacking in natural or spontaneous quality; based on differential morphological characters not necessarily indicative of natural relationships (Merriam-Webster Incorporated) An Ingredient is something that enters into a compound or is a component part of any combination or mixture The FDA defines a food additive as "any substance the intended use of which results or may reasonably be expected to result -- directly or indirectly -- in its becoming a component or otherwise affecting the characteristics of any food." (International Food Information Council and FDA).

Ascorbic acid, citric acid, sodium benzoate, calcium propionate, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrite, calcium sorbate, potassium sorbate, BHA, BHT, EDTA, tocopherols (Vitamin E), Sucrose (sugar), glucose, fructose, sorbitol, mannitol, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame-K), neotame, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and artificial colors.

- To maintain or improve safety and freshness: preservatives slow the spoilage of food. - To improve or maintain nutritional value: vitamins and minerals are added to foods to add nutritional value to those that are malnourished and lacking in nutrients; to reduce caloric value and sugar intake. - Improve taste, texture, and appearance: food colors maintain or improve appearance; other additives help with acidity and alkalinity of foods, while others help the taste and appeal of foods in the reduced fat category.
