Dear Danny:
FootbalL practice will begin the morning of .August 29. The first meal
will be served at the dorm the of August 21 and you will be
expected to arrive not later than the middle o the afternoon on the 27th.
Pres.s, radio, television. and other news media will be h:ere. August 28.
You will also have tne 28th on which to draw your equipment, get your
room assignment, and take your physical exam. including the m.ile run.
Reporting in pe:r!ect physical condition is going to be more important
this year than it. has been here since the early sixties ('60's) when we
were winning National Championships. The reason for this is by the
opening game we expect the whole atmosphe-re around here to be
exa-ctly as it was at that tilne. We expect you to be confident,
weU-conditione'd:, mean, ambitious
1
and proud.
To a:'ecompHsh the a.bove you will have to be a special kind of person
one who is dedicated to do the work in practice that will prepare you for
any and everything that could happen at game time. We must prove in
practice that we are brave and we will beat cowards in the 4th quarter on
conditioning. We must give so much in preparation that we are assured
that we will never surrender or give up in combat on Saturday afternoon.

L tke. me:, tolerate me, put up with me, or hate me - this is the course we
will pursue becau.se it is the only t!UI'e way to win; and if you do it, you
will win and you will have a litHe something special as an individual.

May 1 call to your attention that three of our first four opponents
will be the most improved football teams in this area. VPI, Southern
Mississippi., and Vandy will be much stronger this year. It is
reasonable to assume that they will give one-hundred and fifty per
cent (150%) to beat us which makes it imperative that we are fuHy
prE)pared early.
Our very best to your families and looking forward to seeing you.
on the 27th.
