Global tourism

1.Critical reading and writing VALUE: This assessment is an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to search for relevant literature, to summarise salient points and thus to critically engage with the literature. These are skills that you will need to develop and perfect over the next few years, as they are crucial to any essay you will write at university. Reading and writing are critical parts of learning and doing research. Academics rarely create new knowledge out of the blue but base their arguments on other peoples work and reference these to give their own work credibility. You might want to take a look at the following book if you are unsure what I mean by critical reading and writing: Goatly , A. 2000, Critical Reading and Writing : An Introductory Coursebook,London: Routledge. Assessment Question: What is current thinking on sustainable tourism? Using relevant and appropriate references, explain the different approaches towards sustainable tourism. For this assessment, you are required to do the following: 1. Search for six relevant texts from the academic literature in the area of sustainable tourism. 2. Identify relevant paragraphs within the texts to help you answer the question. 3. Photocopy/scan and reference the relevant paragraphs, then highlight and summarise the main points and arguments. 4. Provide a synthesis of your chosen sources, incorporating the main points and arguments (max. 1000 word). It is not enough to just rewrite your notes, you will need to draw together particular themes that you observe in the texts and tell your readers how they are connected and interlinked. 5. Include a reference list of all the sources you have used (reference according to Harvard).

2.Essay Maximum of 1500 words Essay question: Explain and assess the social impacts of tourism and illustrate these using a case study of your choice. It is important that you support your statements with the appropriate references. While I expect a minimum of seven academic references (book chapters or journal articles), you cant have too many references. Dont use too many direct quotes. Indirect quotes have two advantages over direct quotes: they show you have understood what you have read and that you are able to incorporate it meaningfully into your essay. In some situations, direct quotes are preferable; for example, where the actual words used are difficult or impossible to paraphrase. In all cases, quotes should be used to provide support for your argument. You should never quote just for the sake of it.
